    I dropped out of school to help my family, and for someone who is dying to study and work for a career your channel is a life saver. Maybe someday I will get enough saved up that I can go to college. Fingers crossed.

    I find western culture fascinating the most, however even if I'm learning a lot and I probably know a lot of anthropology/philosophy/psychology that it's natural for me to study that I absorb information quickly, it's not the best field for me to want to study. I still can't help not to observe though. In the USA because it's multicultural, you can see people's culture everywhere you go, so I'm learning everyday. But so far I'm observing the western culture the most.

    Traditional values refer mainly to circles and curves which reflect in their Art, the way they meet and often their habitat. The technological world we live in sits on linear structures physically and mentally. On one side we have circles, on the other we have squares: for one to directly fit with the other, one has to dominate! Equality between the two may require to go into virtual mode: with a non competitive approach, one can go back and forth from one to the other and experience the journey. To start with the conception that one is right and the other wrong is not leading to solutions, to adopt one approach or the other according to circumstances would be more like it! We may like the idea, but have no illusion about a global application, we can then possibly make use of this concept at our level.

    I just wanted to comment - the example at 15:00 of the underestimation by residents of their "consumption of beer" was not really the best example IMHO, simply because drinking is something most people grossly understate in general, just because it's not something you really want to brag about, unless you are like, waking up the next day after a frat party, lol

      but yeah, I can also see how cultures might not want to admit some of their not so lovely customs and behaviors, too - unless, of course, to them it is perfectly normal to do so. In the case of alcohol, it is known by our society to not be a very healthy or positive thing to do much of, so yes, they will cover it up if they can.

    For a science presenter to be credible they must be precise. This includes their language. I am regularly forced to tolerate without remark the sloppy pronunciation of "et cetera" as "ek setera". However when that sloppiness degenerates into abbreviating the phrase as "ect." then I must object. For science accurate observation precedes clear explanation.

    So yes I am saying that if you weighed anthropology along those other sciences it would not be favoured and have got through everything prior. If I were lazier which I already am enough I could have gone and taken anthropology. I KNOW that and I am starting the third (final) level of pathophysiology and Ill tell it would have given me less work to do. It probably would if I did it now, although I am not going to opt to do such a thing instead

    In want to understand history better, like anthropology would do it.
    But 🤔 more important is to understand the brain nowadays. I don’t know people understand human behaviour and to get into that field with Professor Robert Sapolsky I have a long way to go.
    :(
    Lots of medicine involve but I’ll get there. I’ve got forensics to study for that 💔
    And I hope as good as Professor Philip Zelikow to undertand human behaviour like part of history
    ..
    Aka: main goal: why are we so stupid.

    Can anyone recommend any good books focusing around anthropology? I'm fascinated by differences in cultures from both psychological and narrative aspects. I'm thinking of studying it at Uni though i'd like to grasp a better idea of the subject without hitting the purely academic focused books like anthropology for dummies etc.
    Good video by the way!

  • @JB-sz4wy
    @JB-sz4wy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are going there - keep in mind that anthropology isnt a science - even if it gets into bones and all that. Do not expect the medical facilities, hospital employers, or health care/information management programs to recognize it- that is not psychology which can be more of a science (although not always is that considered substantial) and it certainly is not biology which most medical or health professions want you to study or have a good background in unless you want to risk it in a specialized school like I did although I can have the mindset for the sciences. Some act as if it is scientific and it can be analyzed using the methods although it is a social science which often belongs with sociology and those sorts of fields. I am not saying it should not be looked into for interest if you want or if you are going more for social disciplines - it is more oriented to studying cultures for social reasons and I know people who study it. Do not expect it to count as a course to back or plar you for specialized school courses other than for graduate work in its own field.

    • @frederikphilipsen3065
      @frederikphilipsen3065 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      First you say it's not a science and then you say it's a social science? Your views on science are obviously biased by your devotion to the natural sciences... The notion that eg the healthcare professions won't recognize an anthropological/ethnographic view as valuable is simple not true. In general many fields are looking to anthropology for innovative angles that cannot be found by any of the natural sciences. How would you ever describe and investigate that which is social without recognising social science?

      Look up David Stewart, the youngest recipient of the Macarthur Genius Award as a high school student. He started studying Mayan Culture at 8 years old and doing glyph sketching at 12 years old. But, then it seems your interest is in Physical Anthropology. Maybe you should try Lee R. Burger and his recent finds in South Africa. Look up Rising Star Cave and homo nelida found in 2013. You should start with DAWN OF HUMANITY Nova. It can be found on UTUBE.
