- As a C70 user, I'm pretty happy with the announcement from @CanonUSA on the new C400. Here's why I will plan on using it as my new primary camera, putting the C70 as my B cam.

love the video. cinema cameras don't normally have ibis as those with internal ND make it hard to also add in the hardware needed for ibis and with the ibis creating artifacts at the edge of screen some times i does give the most professional look. personal i want gyro data to be recorded to give a better stabilization in post using gyro data and even in some cases improving rolling shutter like how Blackmagic does in their cameras with BRAW
I been binging through your videos on your channel because I always took interest in video production and always been a firm believer in quality over quantity. I am the type of person that will looks for top of the line gear that will bring longevity. In your video I heard you mention A cam and B cam I assume that is ranking the level of the camera. A video idea as a suggestion be explaining the tiers of cameras/lenses etc because this is foreign territory to me: categorizing them in A cam B cam what is good for high quality production, streaming, and vlogging tier. Love your content btw.
@@OverflowNexus thanks friend. Yeah a cam is your go to camera while b cam is the camera you’d use for a secondary angle and b roll shots
@@AlexanderJawfox ok that is confirmation what I was thinking I do appreciate that. I will continue to learn more I do believe content creation will be on the rise and the new 9-5 lol
I think the speedbooster might be more of a useful party trick than the triple base ISO. What do you think?
Oh I love the speed booster. It would be interesting to use it on the c400 with my older EF glass.
Great info. Make sure you put your curves and color wheels above your LUT so you get the most out of your footage.
C80 is coming
@@radio1900 c400 and c80 it’ll be the same as the R5 and R6 similar cameras but slightly different. In my experience just buy nice or buy twice. But also don’t fall for the gimmicks. I wouldn’t sell a c70 for a c80. I would buy the c80 over the c70 though.
I own two C70 an R5C and the R3 for photos... I have a big love for that stop or two more in the hightlights from the DGO sensor.. damn I would have loved to see a Full frame DGO sensor done in the future...
For sure. I was reading they went to the back illuminated sensor adding better low light and auto focus features but eliminating the DGO we have in the C70. Is the R3 back illuminated as well?
Yep the R3 is BSI sensor (Canons first take on that)
I have heard that they went with the non DGO sensor because it was to demanding and would have given real bad rolling shutter because of the readout speed.. but like with everything else.. there is always a solution to those kind of things.. back in the days the PC graphics cards had 128 MB ram and the cameras and the 5d mark 2 was the best video camera you could get... only 24-105 you could get was F4 ;) things can be done... if they want it to happen.
Test about the low light i have seen until now from CVP was that it actually didnt do that well in low light with the noise, but the colors was really good.
I mean if you want good low light Sony cameras has always been the go to I think.
@@baekmedieroh I hear ya. It can get better but the business and price point behind it all plays a factor.
I dunno it’ll be interesting to see that triple base iso on a full frame sensor. My business partner uses fx6 and fx3. We never notice much of a better low light advantage with his cameras vs mine. The Sony a7iii however compared to other mirrorless. Had a clear win in dark settings.
@@AlexanderJawfox I love all about the C400.. But I would love to have had the RF mount for the RF 24-105 f2.8 to be glued on there... and then the C70 as a b cam... but i have tried to match the c70 with the r5c and the R3... and its just not the same image.
Thats the reaason why I got another C70 in the first place :)
Great Video!:D Love my C70. 6K FF made me switch to the C400!!
Yup same here. Thank you! And that triple ISO will be nice too
Was going to buy Komodo X (bummed Nikon bought them) but will go with C400 now as upgrade to R5c. FF 6K + CLOG2 + RF glass = heaven.
@@velvetsound I was really considering the Komodo x as well. But I think the c400 will be the right choice
Interesting stuff man. I am invested in the SL2S system because of glass, but looking for more.
I understand that for sure. I’m not too familiar with that camera but anything leica is gold I hear.
i just bought the r6 mark ii. I also have the r5c and c70 . which of these would you sell for the c400? The c400 is so enticing lol
I’d keep the r6ii for stills and light video work, then sell your r5c, keeping your c70 as a B camera and the c400 as your main 🎥
@@AlexanderJawfox I was thinking the same
I also do interview work. The r6 mark ii can be used on one subject and the c70 on the other. while using the c400 to hit both subjects
@@noranoskyle4417 yeah that would work nicely
R6 mark II for stills (I have that and R5c right now). Note: R6 II can shoot 6K full frame ProResRAW to Ninja V in CLOG2 with IBIS and gets a really nice dynamic range that way.
The Canon C400 aka C70 mk ii.......🤣🤣🤣🤣 Interesting title but very true
Yeah! From reading the specs that’s everything I would of asked for for an upgrade in the c70
@@AlexanderJawfox I personally saw it more of a C200 mkii hence the doubling to C400 but many saw the C70 as the mkii to the C200 so much of a muchness really
The C400 is a baby c500. Canon has yet to come out with a sensor like the C70. However based on patent filings a new DGO sensor is in the works. YO I should try Lucky AF. I've been a fan of Tsunami in Fairfax VA. Canon told me on X that there is a difference in DR with the C70 vs the C400. C70 has about a stop more.
@@GabrielScindian lucky is where it’s at! Give them a try. The dgo on c70 is nice. I didn’t notice much of a difference in the range btw the two filming in them both today. The c400 had a much cleaner look in low light.
Did the auto focus get improved?
All I read was it was a marked improvement over the C70 autofocus which is still usable. Probably not quite R5 level of autofocus.
btw ibis has the censor floating around in the camera which could cause artifacting... i'm not sure any REAL CINEMA camera has ibis at all.
i want the c400 so badly (and i wouldnt mind the c80 as a B cam... then my current c70 could be a C cam? lol)
@@jomprodlive yeah probably so? I’m hoping technology has improved. But yeah that would be an ideal setup. Nothing wrong with a b and c cam. I always like to have one camera gimbal ready. Which is my r5 at the moment.
The C400 is a great camera, but not for my use case, as I only shoot for me, so my camera should be light and it doesn't have to look professional or to have a lot of connections. My wishlist is an R5C MKII with internal ND, with IBIS, and at least 15 steps DR, working at 8K-RAW-LT 60fps with the internal battery, having animal AF. All this for under 5'000.-$. Nice to have would be 8K-RAW-LT at 120fps, or cropped 6K-RAW-LT at 120fps and 4K at 240fps. I would also be happy with 6K-RAW-LT instead of 8K, but as the R5 MKII is 8K this won't change for an R5C MKII. In your case, I would also go with the C400. Thank you for sharing your reasons about why you will get the C400👍, I guess there will also come a 6K C70 MKII but in 35mm, maybe for 1000-2000.-$ cheaper than the C400, but the FF would also be my choice over 35mm.
Thanks for the video!
I'm with the doubts camp, but of course all this stuff is very individual-preference based.
Doubts because of maybe three things.
Firstly, I like smaller cameras. Means smaller support gear, less strain on your back, easier time pretending to meet cabin luggage weight restrictions. Even the C70 I find too large, and for me it's awkward for handheld -- I'd rather hold an r5c. But horses for courses. I can see you like to rig your camera out some, whereas I'm trying my best to strip it down.
Secondly, image quality up from a C70 doesn't look like that big a jump to me, despite the numbers on paper. No image I've yet seen out of the C400 has made me go, "Wow!", has got me excited. It's more like, "Yeah, cool. It looks fine and does the job." So, it doesn't emotionally seal the deal. I get more wow factor looking at clips from a 2010 HD-only Arri Alexa, or 2009 Red Epic, though those are for a completely different market and production environment, etc, etc.
Thirdly, I get the feeling that a workhorse camera that is slightly more my style is around the corner. I don't think the C400 is a C70MkII. I think Canon will bring out the same sensor in 6-9 months, except in a smaller body with fewer inputs -- and THAT will be the C70MkII, or the C90, or whatever -- and it'll also be significantly cheaper. Canon did the same thing with bringing the C100 out after the C300, and the C70 after the C300MkIII. Anyone who doesn't jump on the more expensive camera's bandwagon or who was on the fence then says, "OMG! Half the price but same sensor?!!", and gets in on round 2.
Thanks for the insight. Some interesting and useful points you make. With my work flow, as long as the camera body can mount on a gimbal I’m okay with it. Although most the time I’m on the sticks or hand held. I felt the c70 was awkward and preferred the fx6 body. I may be wrong but I feel as if there will not be a C70II. The c400 competes with and may outperform Komodo x, fx9, fx6 while the c70 was along the fx3. I think they are trying to give us a good an and b cam situation. As we know there are the specs and what we as creators can make with it.
@@AlexanderJawfox Hey Alexander! Out of curiosity, why was it that you felt that there would not be a C70 Mk II? If it was because there was no room in the lineup, you might be right! I mean, the C80 probably cannibilizes a lot of the C400's sales.
@@Voiceimitator yeah it’s a weird situation bc I’m not selling my c70 to get a c80 and I’m still gonna get c400 over the c80 for the better raw and frame rates and the cfexpress port. I think they are hoping people will use the c80 as a b cam to the c400 over time which would make sense. When I do get the c400 the c70 will be configured for gimbal use.
and then they announced the c80 👀
@@jomprodlive it woulda made sense if it had a cf express port. I filmed with c70 and the c400 today and the c70 sd card were done halfway trying to keep up with the same footage quality as the 400 filming raw.
Excellent review! I also shoot with the C70. I’m in the DC area. Let’s collab 🙌🏾
That’d be awesome
Not a C70 mk ii lol. Totally different form factor and no DGO. This is more like a budget C500. The C70 is still going to look more “cinematic” because of that DGO sensor. Haven’t been wow’d by C400 footage.
@@TJIzzy I’ll be honest I haven’t been wowed either. But then again these TH-camrs get maybe a couple days to plan and shoot some test footage. It’ll be interesting to see some real world tests. There’s the pre release footage TH-camrs get, then the magic that creatives produce. Give it to a passionate DP who wants to bring his vision to life and not a TH-camr who wants to crank out some content, spit some technical data at us, so he gets a check.(although I am thankful for those TH-camrs)
I think we were all confused by the C70 form factor. It was a mistake especially given the R5C was out as a competing model. Canon listened, added some features missing from the C70, SDI ports, cf express, etc.
The lack of DGO on the 400 was a specific choice by canon, choosing auto focus and low light capabilities over dynamic range; this benefits solo shooters. Even still the dynamic range isn’t bad on the c400 and it’s all packaged under $9k US. Not bad imo.
But as we know what’s on paper isn’t always what benefits us, I’ll love to test it out for my own work.
Meh.
