Would love to know more about how you develop symbolism in your work! I've only just started following you last year and was super thrilled to learn you've got some roots in Singapore! My dad's side is pseudo-peranakan and I often incorporate elements of Chinese and Southeast Asian culture in my work (they were in the Riau Islands in colonial times before coming to Singapore and basically faked being not 100% Chinese to avoid discrimination from locals there, continued in Singapore to wear the kebaya, make the beaded slippers, some of the dishes, and I have my great grandma's belts that I wear with my outfits - so cultural appropriation/assimilation/adaptation that I'm still figuring out). Thanks so much for sharing your work with us!

I just wanna say that your studio vlogs are amazing and you’re the only artist on here I actually keep up with. Your videos are so relaxing, both to work to and to listen to while I do my own work.
sha'an, you've got to trust us when we say there's no dull moment in your vlogs ever no matter how mundane you think they are!
I legit paused and stared at your notes for a good 5 seconds to make sure i was reading 'peranakan' right! I'm peranakan too (Malaysian) and its so exciting every time I come across someone of the same dying heritage! If you need another key word to help with your research, we are also known as Baba Nyonya. Don't forget to study the Malay/Indonesian/Thai influence on the peranakan culture too! Also keep in mind that when the culture was born, Malaya was occupied by the British and Dutch, so you will also find that the architecture and design unique to peranakans have a distinctly colonial style. All of this heavily influences our culture, art, and practices :)
Our aesthetic is a very interesting mix of the malay batik, with chinese embellishments, and english style tableware, etc. Its super fun to incorporate into art! (a quick hack to make anything look immediately peranakan... use a teal and red/pink color palette)
Omg same! Quite shocked when I saw Peranakan. I’m Malaysian too but not Peranakan. 100% Malay haha. Sha’an should come to Malacca :) She’s gonna loveee Malacca.

“Why wouldn’t I have the thing I’m in love with???” That’s exactly how I handle all decisions lol
I have an additional suggestion for the person struggling with their parent being ill and trying to work. Add into your contracts that if something like that happens that you'll find another artist to finish the project or have a list of artists you can suggest to the client (with the artists permission) to jump in. It's not an ideal when you're being hired for your specific style BUT offering solutions and building a safety net for yourself is super helpful both for your own mental health and to keep good relationships with clients.
sometimes you have to just bail. it happens. but it makes it easier on you to plan for a worst case scenario before one pops up!
This video autoplay-ed and my first thought was, “i don’t remember watching this,” so I checked the upload date and saw that it was released just an hour ago and that seriously made me happy!! Your videos are one of my sources of joy in life. I’m a med student who constantly tries to live a creative life even though my field has not been so allowing of other passions. Watching these videos make me feel like I can live my dream life someday (a doctor who freely does art on the side). So, thank you so much for these inspiring videos. Lots of love!

I love love love this tiger piece especially the little border around it! So many sweet details and love put into it :) also, totally agreeing with everyone that there’s no such thing as boring bits! It’s all part of a job and it’s all fascinating to see how other créatives deal with the less ‘glamorous’ side of the job haha

Hey, thanks for answering my question!
I agree with copying being ultimately harmful to a young artists growth; the online environment is now one that heavily encourages continuous copying of already established artists and if they copy well enough they’ll reap the the rewards, but then it can get them stuck in not working on their own creative voice and getting in touch with their own values/aesthetic/culture/personality
And I understand why it’d be annoying to see someone copy so extensively, as artwork is definitely very personal and intricately tied to your personhood. I think a lot of people don’t view illustrative, and especially cute and simple, artworks as personal as they are more consumable than, say, an oil painting about intergenerational trauma, so unless you are the type of person to create such simple work it’s difficult to view as personal.
I look forward to your artwork this year, it’ll be great to see how connecting with your cultural ties affects the overall impact of your art!

I washed my sheets and blanket once and then I couldn’t find my Apple Pencil. I looked everywhere for almost an hour. Then I had a horrible thought. My Pencil is white. My blanket is white. 😱
Panicked, I ripped all my sheets and blanket out of the washer and in the bottom I found, you guessed it, the Apple Pencil.
It never worked again. 💔
Like you said, expensive mistake that didn’t have to happen. Now I have the kind that attaches to the side and a case that keeps it secured there so it hasn’t happened again.
This is amazing! I discovered your channel just a few weeks ago and I'm afraid of running out of videos to watch, omg! You are such an inspiration to me. I've learned so much from you. You and I are the same age and for the longest time in high school, I toyed with the idea of pursuing art. Instead, I studied Geology then did a Masters degree in Environmental Science. I was deathly afraid of not making money so I abandoned art. I've been working as an Environmental Analyst for about 3 yrs and I'm grateful for this job but some days I still dream about what my life would be like had I become a painter or an illustrator. And then I found your channel. Bless. It's like watching my very old dreams manifest into a real tangible professional person. Thank you so much for your videos.
I feel like i've been feeling very uncertain about my work recently - i've started to share it online but i feel like the work i have been posting doesn't resonate with me as much as it used to - i've been posting mostly old works from the last 2 to 3 years because they look pretty or something i think someone else would like more than myself. Honestly hearing what you said to other people's questions has really helped m. I've realised that I want to post the work i like and enjoyed creating because that feels more like me. Thank you!
I can't believe I didn't know you had Peranakan roots!! My dad's family was Singaporean Chinese as well. If you happen to come across any interesting resources about Peranakan culture/design, I'd love to see them :)
(also there's a cool store in SG called SUPERMAMA that includes a lot of singaporean inspired designs on plates and things, you should check them out!)
The auto subtitles were really struggling with peranakan, I swear they came up with something different each time!

oh my good. the incident that happened with the apple pen happens all the time to people with adhd. its so frustrating, its even referred to as the adhd tax because it can become so costly when you make a lil mistake because you weren't paying attention. I feel for you !

I have a procreate question. How do you know what size canvas to work on? Do you always work on the biggest possible? I know that for Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop it is easier to take your images to print without worry but I'm concerned about the quality of images for printing when using Procreate. I'm just learning about Procreate. Thanks.
I'm usually drawing for an end result. If itXs conceot sketches i'll use the screen size. With the tiger I knew I would print to a3 so i made it a3. I think about what the purpose is beforehand. If I think it'll eger be a print I'll make it bigger :-) hope this helped!

I also am trying to explore my heritage and how it could influence my artwork (especially my Brazilian side lately!). I particularly have been fascinated by folk art traditions. My family is a mix of many things and I grew up in many places so it's been interesting and really fun to research and nerd out over art history. 🤓
Hi Sha'am! I love your vlogs! Im definetly going to read up on the paper you mentioned in your video! This year I also want to work on incorporating culture elements in my art. I recent found at that my grandmothers dad is from China. I defintetly get the critizism of my work as well, it tends to be more cutesy and happy. And some of my professors critizize my work for not being serious especially because Im Black 😭😭

Is your art more children based ? Like for children’s books?
I don't know if it's for one particular audience more than the other but I do love hearing from kids after they consume my work (usually through my children's books) :-)

Hi Sha’an 💛 Really interesting that you use both blue and red pencil for one drawing. Is it blue for cool colours and red for warm?
Yes! Unless they need to show up under the paint like the stripes i use contrasting :)
