This one is so hard to test because both over eating and under eating are a symptom of depression, as is a loss of motivation, so eating badly can also occur as a result of depression.

I wonder if just having someone care helped. Having someone explain nutrition, give recommendations, provide money and follow up. Someone cared. People respond to that.

    • @alisonsheep
      @alisonsheep 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Simply having someone appear to care is huge for boosting morale, but simply having someone care isn't enough for a person to recover. Otherwise "thoughts and prayers" would actually make a difference. Instead, they provided actionable strategies for improving health of body and mind, and encouragement. Cultivating intrinsic motivation, as one has to actually implement the strategies autonomously with a support system which is also highly correlated with chances of recovery, at least with addiction, I don't know if depression studies have examined the role of support systems in recovery success though I'm sure they have (e.g. I want to get better, I have the tools to get better, *and* other people care/are rooting for my success)
It's that guidance and continued counselling that creates the impetus for real change imo.

It absolutely helps! I have been diagnosed with severe chronic depression, and have recently been eating less and less. A close friend noticed (she's amazing) and asks me every night if I had dinner already, she doesn't push me but knowing someone cares for me that way gets me to make dinner just for her sake. It's not a solution and therapy helps me to want that for my own sake as well but without her I'd be severely under weight by now

I was homeless for 11 days last month so I was staying at a shelter. They kicked me out of bed at 6am, breakfast was at 7, lunch at 12, dinner at 6 and plain sandwiches if you need a snack. I've never felt so healthy. I've been trying to get into an eating disorder program for 2 months now because I was starving and ill in the head... but I've been focusing on eating more often and walking long distance every day for blood circulation and to make me hungry. Dunno about raw cookie dough helping depression, but it might help you catch salmonella!
Seriously though, please don't eat raw cookie dough if it is made with eggs. If you are 100% joking and don't actually eat raw dough, please disregard the rest of this comment. However,
You really can get salmonellosis from raw eggs, a disease that can be life-threatening, or, rarely, even lead to typhoid fever. In any case, a salmonella infection is the last thing you need when your mental health is in decline. Infection causes widespread inflammation as your immune system fights the bacterial assault.
The link/correlation between depression and inflammation is very strong. And by throwing insults at your immune system, you're riling up those macrophages, signaling to them to increase inflammation in your body, crippling your body's ability to recover from a depressive episode. So your depression lingers, delaying recovery until after the immediate threat is dealt with.
It really sucks that you're going through a hard time right now. Treat yourself kindly, and cook that cookie dough

In relation to the confounding factors - Some (maybe many) people know what to eat, but can't afford healthier food - certainly not as a staple. Healthier food also tends to not be shelf stable, meaning you have to go to the store more often, which adds other expenses as well as physical strains on some disabled folks. Poor folks can't afford to buy more expensive healthier food only to have it go bad, so buying cheaper shelf-stable stuff - or at least stuff that's frozen and will keep until they can get around to it - is what doesn't throw their money in the trash. Food pantries also provide...the calories made available to them, which are a lot of carbs and canned goods of various sorts, and they have no control over what they get, so can't improve the nutrition of what they give. They also need mostly shelf-stable supplies, or food would go bad before it even got handed out.

YES! This is such a big thing. I've definitely been there myself, or even on that borderline and not wanting to take a chance on a better but more expensive food item, because if I hate it (or can't eat it because of dietary restrictions), that's a lot more money going to waste.

  • @jessicasmith5728

I've struggled with weight issues for years. I think it goes back to when I lived with my mother. Even when I was still skinny, she kept getting on my case about my appearance. One time, when I was 15 she made a comment about how I looked like I was getting cellulite on my legs. Between the age of 14 and 17, she forced me to go on a diet. Once I moved out of her house, I started eating more junk and fast food. Before long I was overweight and couldn't fit most of my clothes. I also struggled with depression and PTSD due to my traumatic upbringing.
One year, I lost 33 lbs only to gain it all back and at least six more lbs on top of that by the time I was 25. I've finally been under 170 lbs for more than three months. I'm finally learning to diet and exercise again. Hopefully, by the time I hit the big 3-0 next year I'll be well below 160.

You can find the description of the diet in the PDF here: dro.deakin.edu.au/view/DU:30096024 starting around page 5.
As someone who has spent a lot of time tuning their diet to avoid depression, I feel the most important features are that it's high fat, high fibre, includes leafy greens and mostly avoids simple carbs (white bread, noodles, rice, potatoes, sugar, etc.). This diet is a big step in the right direction, if you can stick to it.
The only things I would change are: allow unlimited fish, eggs and poultry, because they're harmless as long as you don't already have a cholesterol problem and you keep up the other parts of the diet, and allow fruits to be substituted with vegetables, because most fruits are mostly sugar and hold almost no nutritional value.

  • @Croz89

I wonder if there's any link with the psychological effects of eating food that's perceived to be unhealthy. Many of us are familiar with the feeling of guilt we get from "giving in" to food cravings for foods high in fat and sugar. I wonder if that might make depressive symptoms worse. In which case, it's not a physiological effect of better nutrition, but a psychological effect of less guilt from eating "bad" food.
The inclusion of spices also seems interesting, I expect some of the diets these people were on might have been quite monotonous, perhaps down to lack of motivation due to depression. I also wonder if a diet that has more diverse flavours could improve mood as well.
It's going to be interesting to see if either of these have any influence along with a better intake of nutrients.

Even if the diet correlation is true, the cause and effect is kinda murky. In other news, doing things that aim to make you feel better about yourself just might help you feel a little bit less bad about yourself.
Nutrition and exercise are great and all, don't get me wrong - but some types of depressive states just shift to a new form when changing such things.
Try finding what works for YOU. It'll take time, and might seem odd to others - but whatever works to better your overall mood is what I see as right

Anecdotal evidence: my diet is garbage, but staying on my medication consistently and seeing my therapist regularly has helped my depression a lot.
Also, the circumstances and situations in my life being less shitty has probably helped.

everything is mind body and soul . It’s all connected whether people want to believe it or not . If your mind is off everything else will follow suit . I believe starting with wanting to get better is the first step then diet and then everything else follows because to eat better you have to want to eat better . Ever wake up and feel tired of being tired ? Tired of being depressed or anxious ? At that moment you should follow your intuition and start trying to make changes . Positive ones . Eating well is one of them . The moment you are tired of being tired is the moment your soul is telling you it needs better . Better mindset (mind), better nutrients and healthy food (body) and that will make the soul eventually feel better . It’s all connected and if you are disconnected in one or the other I believe that is where depression starts to take over . Don’t ignore your intuition . Don’t keep binge watching tv even though your soul is telling it’s had enough . At that point turn off the tv go for a walk . Breathe in deeper . Listen to your body for what it’s asking you . Give it its nutrients ! If you ignore it that is how depression manifests . Remember you can do anything in your life ! Anythinggg you want to .

I have a Mediterranean diet, and have for most of my life. I eat mainly vegetables, pasta, fish-very little red meat and almost no simple carbs (this because that's what I enjoy, I'm no health freak). However, my depression has been life-long, a childhood problem, and it took a few dozen zaps to the brain to get it under enough control to keep me alive. True, a lithium prescription caused me to gain a huge amount of weight in 3 months (thanks, phychiatrists!), and I don't exercise nearly as much as I should, but I think the researchers were right to note that clinical depression is a different beast entirely.

diet change helped me get over depression. my doctor tried a bunch of different things first, including various meds, so i don't think it was plasebo.
no refined sugar no simple carbohydrates lots of veggies is what worked. plant focused but not strictly vegetarian.
i have Asperger syndrome and was having depression, migraines, seizures on the side. diet change helped the depression, migraines, seizures a lot. but obviously its complicated. i am grateful to healthcare triage for reassuring me that artificial sweeteners are ok. i use a lot of stevia.
