This video is the beginning of a series "Learning from other artists". Let me know what you think!
He Tom you should check out some stuff from JORGE DE LA TORRIENTE, im sure you'll like his minimalist pictures
I am very excited by what you are doing. Learning from others is the other way you can get better.
Great idea for a series! Very nice beginning
I really enjoyed this and will look forward to seeing the next one. Thank you
Thank you all for your feedback and support. Now I have to think about the next video ... next Monday :)
When the soul is behind the camera, the results became an extension of that experience...
Beautiful said.
I very much liked how you talked about these images. Minimizing distractions to emphasize what's essential.... I've got a lot to learn, but I'm motivated. Thanks for your presentation!
Thanks for producing and sharing. Very inspirational.
This is a wonderful place and time to begin thinking about my winter photos- thank you so much.

Brilliant observations, Tom. Really enjoyed this. Thanks

You certainly picked the best way to start! Michael Kenna is one of my heroes. Great choice of images and explanation of the vision to these photos. "Less Is More"
He's one of my favorite photographers so the choice was simple :)
Thanks Tom for this clip, you introduced me to Michael Kinna, and although it's been just 2 years since I am doing photography, I am shocked to see how my compositions are mostly simple and reflect the works of Kinna.
Great series idea. I also love it when I find people talking about Michael Kenna and how they see his work.
With every artist that I'll include in this series I'll try to offer my views and not others
Right on sir spot on.
More helpful video!! Thank you very much! Tom.
+friendship yujin friendship, yujin thanks for watching

Enjoyed this. Kenna is one of my favs and an inspiration. It was good to hear another POV on what makes his images special.
In this series my goal is to introduce the photographers and the photos I like. Thanks for the comment
You put a lot of thought into this and it shows. Great examples, I'll check his work out. Thanks for doing a great video, again.
Thanks for watching
Great video Tom. I really like this concept of learning from master photographers. Would love to see more!
Thanks for the feedback. Next Monday check out another video from this series. Until then there will be the videos from Thursday and Saturday
Love the use of negative space! I definitely need to do more of that in my photography.
glad you find it useful
I really enjoyed this video and seeing some excellent examples of minimalist photography. I'm definitely going to go out and try something like this. Thanks!
+Gary Jones Fine Art Photography Thanks for your comment. Good luck in your work
Wonderful video and I too love his images. Leslie

Great video! Michael Kenna is indeed one of the greatest "fine art film" photographers. Thank you for your efforts! Cheers, Mihnea.
It's a series of videos I wanted to do for a long time and now with the new year was the perfect moment to start fresh ... every Monday a new video from this series :)
This is a wonderful idea what you are doing. I really enjoyed this being about Minimal Landscapes as I find myself moving that direction with my work lately.
Thank you for your feedback
Informative and enjoyable!
Glad you like it. Thanks for the feedback
That was great. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment
I'm still relatively new to the photography world, so I just discovered Michael Kenna, and what an incredible talent he is. I really love his style. As much as I enjoy your usual videos Tom of taking us along your outdoor adventures. I like how you offered something different here in this video. it keeps it fresh.
Thank you for the feedback. Hope to create an entire series with this type of video
great tutorial!
that was awesome tom. thanks
Thanks for your feedback
Vraiment une belle idée de nous faire découvrir de tels artistes et de telles compositions. Surtout pour des néophytes
that's great, friend thanks ! :)
Interesting and instructional. It's good to see the work of master photographers, and your commentary explains how (the techniques used by the photographer) these images succeed. Cheers.
I'll try to create a series of this where will be included not only photographers but painters as well
Excellent - more please
Every Monday :)
I learned so much from this video
Glad you find it useful
Nice selection of images, simple, stunning and refreshing so thanks.
Thanks, or should I say thank you to Michael Kenna :)
Both of you, I wouldn't have seen them without your post.
Great inspiration, Tom! I've always loved minimal black and white photography but never find myself doing enough of it... we've had LOTS of snow lately so now is the time I guess 😁
Snow is great for minimal photography but so its sand
Good tips. Kenna is one of my top3 fav photographers among with Kertész and Fan Ho. I learned from this vid some new element about Kenna's photography that I hadn't realized before. Thanks. Subbed.
Thanks for the feedback and your time
Superb video Tom!
Mersi
Very well done!
Thank you
Michael Kenna by favourite photographer. 6:45 is exquisite. Thanks for posting. Regards.
Thank you for watching and for your comment
Excellent 👏👏
thanks
I am interested in minimal photography and agree the season used (winter) simplifies the landscape for the focus on the subject without interference of other elements. I have taken minimal winter photos and enjoy letting my eye wander to see the subject I want to capture. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You explained in detail without rushing through the photos how the photo was taken and why. I look forward to more videos.
+Shirley0850 Hope this series will be an interesting one 😀
Inspirational
Glad you like it
Very helpful Video! I don’t like all of his pictures but almost all of them are good for teaching simple but stunning composition. And they encourage every photographer to let his images empty. Less is more.
I guess what I learned from Michael Kenna is when I think an image is simple, maybe I should think again
Photo Tom I think, pure and minimalistic photography must be developed. And sometimes it’s luck ...
Great pictures. Kindly elaborate, what's negative space?
Nice to found this video link on Thomas Eaton last video! (Y)
Great to hear that
cool video
Thank you - much appreciated. I understand he now or did live in Seattle, is that correct?
A lot of People think Michael kenna took most of these photos in winter but some of them he shot it in the middle of summer. This is why he is genius
Yes it's true. I saw how some viewers were discuasing exactly that about one of hia photos and it turns out it was sand
Very nice simple images, I find dificult to shoot so minimalistic compositions but I know it will come with time. BTW how is your weight Tom? ;)
My real weights was 101kg. And now I've lost 1kg. I'm at 99.8 :)
😍
Something a lot of people don't get about Kenna is that the composition wasn't exactly real.He took a photo,he usually had in mind with what he wants to get out of the landscape he shooted and the he removed stuff in darkroom.Kenna was shooting on medium format, known for the capabilities it offers you for cropping and editing in the darkroom.
In sort most of his talent is coming from his vision and less about his photographic skills. For example in the picture shown in 5:50,most likely in his shot there were no rocks, they probably were around there but he didn't capture them, most likely he recreated the rocks in the darkroom.Minimalism is just that, visioning something that makes sense to you and capturing just that,it rarely happens in real life, rarely you will see something isolated from uniportant things, that's what makes minimal photography so apealing.
Yeah, I don't think the creator of this video can do an educated critical appraisal of Kenna's work
That piano in background is torturous
Terrific!
:)
👍
LOL. It's funny that anyone would downvote this. I know the ratio is way more towards upvoting, but some people just baffle me.
It is excellent tks. To improve, maybe the images could appear bigger :)
Se vería genial el video si pudieras mostrar las imágenes de un buen tamaño en video, ya que sin imágenes diferentes y hay que apreciarlas bien para comprenderlas
what lens helps with minimal photography? I get It that lens does not make a picture minimal but what might one consider a good lens kit to have ?
I am looking at 1 canon RF 100-500 telephoto, RF 28-70 F2 at the moment. However confused about these choices
It's tricky to answer because ut depends on the subject. I guess a longer focal length can help you but a 28-70mm can be more versatile. I can't give you a straigth answer.
Please which filter did he use for that ?? ND1000???
I don't know what filter he's using because he's shooting film ... anyway the exposures can get really long some times
Many times when people thinks it’s snow it’s actually sand
Great idea!
Another example for minimalism in landscape photography is Bruce Percy (www.brucepercy.co.uk). MK is one of his influences (I think he states it somewhere), but he's doing it in color. And he is visiting locations were minimalism works even without snow … ;)
I'll check it out
I love Michael Kenna's style, but so many people today just straight up copy his style without adding anything new, it's a shame
Love the pics, just not in love with the cursor moving around inside them.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try in the future just to talk about the image
I liked all of the photos except for 7:57.
+JR Yes it's not great but was to show that even wires can look ok sometimes
Nice video but I wish you would have shown the pictures larger.
Usually photos of the well known photographers are not found at higher resolutions
and here i think the composition you will talk about is that the photo (08:02) look like a dog
