Their unique characteristics bring out very different sides from each other, sides that no other character would be capable of summoning from them. MaoMao becomes more forward and bold while Jinshi becomes more shy and less arrogant, and they both put aside their initial interests to prioritize each other. And all throughout this journey of growth we experience their very entertaining interactions with each other. I wish more anime depicted relationships that feature character growth like this. Also this isn’t talked about or noticed frequently by the fandom, but I really love the subtle ways that Jinshi shows his affection for MaoMao. He constantly worries if she’s eating enough or if she’s being overworked. He knows exactly which kinds of presents she likes because he’s so observant of her. He stands up for her when the other ladies are messing with her. He’s protected her countless times. And she herself has shown her own side of consideration and affection for him. They’re a very well-written and realistic couple

She might think in her head it's due to their class differences but it's very noticeable how she consistently tries to take care of him whenever she feels he hasn't slept or eaten properly. Sure, she might get annoyed by his antics but it's clear she cares for him in ways she doesn't seem to understand yet (and nobody can blame her for that since her harsh upbringing led to her emotional insensitivity).

This guy.... He purely wanted to see MaoMao's scornful expression for refreshing change after dealing with conspiracies here and there. His curiosity took over him good. Trying to pull this stunt was a very bad idea. It's like it's one of many stunts that was pulled on him. His sense of personal space and limit of teasing got kinda messed up as a result. He's been playing 2 different roles in the inner palace and the outer palace. Not to mention, his personal on-off switch is drastic enough. When Gao-Shun is alone with Jinshi, he scolds him to act proper even when there is no one to watch. Jinshi whines because it's just Gao-Shun but Gao-Shun insists that he should act proper because he is there. You'll see, in front of others (including MaoMao), Gao-Shun never says anything over Jinshi as he is in a higher rank than him. This kind of situation, MaoMao easily could handle Jinshi but she couldn't make a move as a commoner and asked Gao-shun for help who's in higher rank than her. Gao-shun gave up because Jinshi is higher rank than him. In the inner palace, only the 4 high consorts are above rank from Jinshi. Though MaoMao wasn't helpless, we really needed consort Gyokuyou right there. Jinshi's speed dash is a good example of how ranking works.

This is 100% harassment. That said, these characters are extremely well written and complex. Eventually you start to get a feel for why they fit with each other. Understanding what’s going on behind Mao Mao’s mind in particular takes an extremely long time tho we do get subtle hints here and there. Despite being our point of reference, Mao Mao does not reveal the entirety of her thoughts to us. When I first started reading this I didn’t think there was going to be romance, sometimes I’m still shocked it is considered one. At the beginning I thought Mao Mao was one thing, but now I see why she is the way she is and somewhat how her mind works. But yes, Jinshi is infringing on Mao Mao’s personal space, harassing her, and often manipulating her into doing things she’d rather not get involved in. Him being pretty does not excuse that.
In case people think she’s joking about him having nothing to kick, he’s an eunuch. Eunuchs were castrated to reduce them being threatening servants. She’s not being cheeky, she’s being literal 😂

I later loved him because of his dynamic personality, and I also think his voice actor does a phenomenal job which adds to the attractiveness. We’ve already seen so many different sides to him, as we did with MaoMao: “rear manager” personality, flirty/teasing personality, childish personality, his lazy side, his intelligent/sharp side, his jealous side, his shocked side, his Tsundere/ short-tempered/concerned side (which if you read the LN you’ll know that’s his true personality), etc. I really like entertaining and dynamic characters like him. I think most other women prefer the strong, silent type (Like Sesshomaru from Inuyasha or Kudo from My Happy Marriage) and I absolutely can’t stand characters like that because they’re SO boring. (I also adore MaoMao - I could write an essay on how much I love her)

Jinshi is 17 and MaoMao is 17. Everyone in the palace thinks he’s 24, but he’s actually only 17. (18 in the LN, but MaoMao had mentioned that AhDuo’s baby was born 17 years ago, so in this scene, Jinshi is actually only 17, just like MaoMao).

@@grimshock6983 I can’t speak for all women but I personally find him very attractive as a character. I didn’t really care for him when I first saw him in the trailer. I later loved him because of his dynamic personality, and I also think his voice actor does a phenomenal job which adds to the attractiveness. We’ve already seen so many different sides to him, as we did with MaoMao: “rear manager” personality, flirty/teasing personality, childish personality, his lazy side, his intelligent/sharp side, his jealous side, his shocked side, his Tsundere/ short-tempered/concerned side (which if you read the LN you’ll know that’s his true personality), etc. I really like entertaining and dynamic characters like him. I think most other women prefer the strong, silent type (Like Sesshomaru from Inuyasha or Kudo from My Happy Marriage) and I absolutely can’t stand characters like that because they’re SO boring. (I also adore MaoMao - I could write an essay on how much I love her)
