When Jinshi cried against Maomao's shoulder in the last week's episode, I realized that he wasn't crying just because of the difficult relationship between him and his mother. Jinshi's emotional breakdown can also be attributed to the fact that managing the entire palace at such young age is incredibly taxing. There's only so much burden one can take before breaking. Maomao is the only person Jinshi is not afraid to show his vulnerable side to.
Plus with the whole hidden identity alone is enough to drive anyone to the wall, look at all undercover operatives. All that lying and watching your back takes a toll.

Unfortunately the original source material aka light novel will require about 14 cours (7 seasons?) of anime to catch up, and it's still ongoing. It would be amazing if they could keep animating it.

Maomao has a real problem with being touched--and I expect that part of that problem is that she knows that once she submits to Jinshi's touch, she's lost. She'll need it like a stray cat learns to need getting its ears scritched. And sooner or later, she knows, she'll roll over and let him rub her belly without ripping his hand apart with her hind legs. And she'll never be able to go back to sleeping in garbage cans again. Then, of course, there'll be the kittens to be dealt with....
