Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Disco Kid, Piston Hondo and Don Flamenco don't really taunt you, they kinda just do things to excite the crowd. How nice of them. Why everyone else has to be a bad sport is beyond me.
It isn't so much bad sportsmanship as it is a tactic. In boxing, if your opponent is enraged and isn't careful with their punches, you get more chances to counterpunch their attack. Trash talking while they're down is a really easy way to anger an opponent into making mistakes, giving you an edge.
Hardly anyone here is talking about Piston Hondo, but I do have to admire his emotional restraint. He's one of the most dignified boxers in Punch-Out, if not _the_ most dignified. 🙂

PD: In TD Soda Popinski, there is an animation when he runs out of his soda, so he says "Нет" and loses when the referee counts to 10. This happens when Soda Popinski had been knocked down twice on the first two rounds, and then at the second knock down in the Round 3 (without Star Punches) that animation will appear.

*Punch-Out!! boxers I'd **_gladly_** go drinking with (preferably **_after_** our match, and I'd buy the first couple of rounds with my prize money if I won the fight):*
*Glass Joe* - Naturally! If _anyone_ in Punch-Out needs a friend, it's him. Assuming that we wouldn't have a language barrier to deal with, I'd like to sit down with Glass Joe and ask him what the secret to his perseverence is. 99 losses and he's _still_ boxing? That's admirable! Maybe I could give him a few pointers on becoming a better boxer (assuming that I defeated him, of course; I wouldn't have room to talk otherwise). The French prefer wine, and I prefer wine, so I'd have to find a bar which serves a good Cab Sav beforehand. But that's doable.
*Disco Kid* - Hell, yeah! The guy just screams, "Look at me, I'm super-fun!" I can get behind a Bon Vivant outlook like his! And watching him shred up the dance floor after a couple of Mai Tais or a pint of Sam Adams would be well worth the cover charge!
*Piston Hondo* - You know, I admire this guy's dignity and personal restraint! Hondo seems like someone I'd like to get to know better; he's a clean boxer (and I don't mind the headband or the manga; apologies to Bumbles McFumbles here), he's the type to challenge me to do better, he probably has a ton of good self-improvement advice, he'd make a good friendly rival and sparring partner...if I can just find a nice bar that serves a good Sake, it's a done deal!
*Bear Hugger* - Bear Hugger is just too jolly of a soul to pass up! Look at him. Just look at him! Listen to that hearty laugh of his! He is Fun Incarnate! And he has an outstanding rapport with animals, so he's surely a quality human being. And I mean, he breaks down sobbing outside the circuit after you beat him, so deep inside that big, bulky, unstoppable exterior is a big, soft heart. And we all know that that's not _really_ maple syrup he's drinking in the ring, so I'm 110% certain that he'd be worth treating to a round of stout.
*Great Tiger* - I'd probably have to keep an eye on him to make sure that he's not teleporting behind me to set me up for a prank, but he's really cool, all in all! Maybe if I can put his qualms at ease with a few pints of Harp, he'd teach me to be an illusionist too! That rare skill could _really_ come in handy! Someone cuts me off in traffic? Poof an illusory clone of myself into the jerk's car, tell him what he did wrong and why I'm cross with him, maybe cuss him out before dispelling my doppelganger...magic is pretty friggin' handy, right?
*Don Flamenco* - I can speak Spanish myself (...un poquito, más o menos...), so there's something for us to connect over; people tend to like you when you try to speak their language. This guy fights for love, he doesn't take a lot of things personally, he's a born entertainer who fights bulls in his spare time, he doesn't want his opponents to give up and encourages them to keep pushing themselves...he _might_ be a wee bit uptight, but I'd like to chat him up a bit and get a feel for his whole personality before inviting him out for drinks. And we'd _have_ to sort out his insecurities over his receding hairline; hair thins over time, Don! It's nothing to be ashamed about.
*Punch-Out!! boxers that I **_might_** like to go drinking with:*
*Von Kaiser* - I dunno; he seems a bit too regimented, overbearing and uptight to be fun. But then again, Germans have a reputation for being great bar-hoppers and peerless connoisseurs of beer and lager, and he might loosen up right away, so maybe he's worth the effort of inviting to the local Mattingly's Pub or whatever. Besides, _little kids_ push him around, so how bad could he be?
*Soda Popinski* - There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to his personality, but maybe a tavern run and a round of vodka and/or Rum-and-Cokes would coax him into letting me meet the _real_ Soda Popinski. He can be domineering, but he's not a bully; he's big, he's strong, he wants everyone to know that and that's it. I can appreciate his interests in Biology, Chemistry and science in general (even if it's all just for the purposes of doping up on questionable, radioactive, performance-enhancing soft drinks), so that might be something for us to chat about. Big "Maybe" here.
*Super Macho Man* - Okay, people who are full of themselves can be a chore to deal with, but their antics can also be _very_ amusing. But he _is_ a beach bum who speaks the Old Tongue of the Beach Combers, so he's automatically fun to pal around with (even if all the conversations _must_ be about him). On top of that, someone really, _really_ needs to have a heart-to-heart with him about his popularity-chasing and how he spends tons of money on star-chasing women who are going to drop him like a hot rock the moment he loses a fight, because he's only hurting himself. Someone needs to clue him in on what's _really_ important in life and it might as well be me, right? And if he buys me a Ferrari for having that talk with him, then I'm driving around the block with him in that Ferrari and giving him my best "Look: I appreciate the gift, but this is _exactly_ what I'm talking about..." lecture. So Super Macho Man's a "Maybe" bordering on "Yes".
*Mr. Sandman* - He's _unreasonably_ fixated on taking and keeping that Champion title, so that's going to create friction between Mr. Sandman and me right off the bat. Though I do appreciate his lighthearted humor towards knocking people unconscious, I feel that he's a very shallow person, about as deep as a puddle. And people like that do tend to be the opposite of "enjoyable." If I go out drinking with him, it'll be to learn more about him and his personality. But first I'd have to decide if he's more trouble than he's worth; even then, the championship title seems to be a _very_ touchy topic for him, so that would be a conversational topic to avoid at all costs (even if _that_ means faking like the bar's Wonton Tacos are making me sick, so I have to run to the Men's Room and try not to puke right quick...).
*Punch-Out!! boxers that I'd **_never_** invite out for drinks:*
*King Hippo* - Is this guy even _human?_ He doesn't seem to speak any form of language (which makes me wonder how he figures out when and where his next boxing match is going to be), so conversing with him is going to be impossible. One thing I know is that King Hippo could put down his weight, my weight _and_ Mr. Sandman's weight in Hard Piña Coladas, he'd probably steal several knick-knacks from the bar on his way out, and because nobody can talk with him to discuss who's paying for what, _I'd_ get stuck with the entire tab. No thanks!
*Ryan Aran* - Professional boxing is entertainment; we're there to beat each other up for money, so it's all just business. But this jerk takes it all personally! For some reason, he genuinely _hates_ his opponent and wishes him harm, and that's a kind of neurosis that I don't have time for. Plus, if he's dirty at any kind of sport, _what else_ is he dirty about? Is he going to spike my beer with Ex Lax, order twelve Carry Out boxes of Hot Wings from the kitchen on the sly during his "bathroom break" and _not_ breathe a word to me about it as he slips out the back door and sticks me with a massive bill? Shame, too; the Irish have a reputation for being _delightful_ people to go tavern-hopping with! Too bad Ryan's too big a pill for me to swallow.
*Bald Bull* - Hell no! This guy's anger management is in the negative integers, he's just one broken skull away from getting thrown out of the league (...maybe; we're talking about the WVBA here, after all), he manhandles the _referee_ on a regular basis and I'm afraid that someone at the bar is going to brush past him the wrong way, and the next thing you know, I'm cooling my heels in a jail cell with Bald Bull after he headbutts two dudes through a plate-glass window, puts his fist through a jukebox and throws the jukebox at the bartender! Besides, he's from Turkey; Turkey is 99% Muslim, which means that _he's_ almost certainly Muslim, and Muslims don't do booze, so what's the point of taking Bald Bull on a pub crawl anyway?
*Donkey Kong* - See "King Hippo". Take everything in "King Hippo" and _double_ it. That's Donkey Kong. Plus, he _seems_ jolly enough, but we all remember his old days of kidnapping women and carrying them off into dangerous construction sites, right? His victory cutscene after beating Little Mac proves that he hasn't changed much; he has a kid now and he's learned how to knot a necktie, but that's about it. Just let _one drunkard_ try to take his Banana Daiquiri and the next thing you know, Donkey Kong's throwing whiskey barrels across the barroom, plowing his oversized Go-Kart through the kitchen, pelting the head cook with a Blue Turtle Shell, grabbing the nearest barmaid and climbing Trump Tower with her. Hardest of hard passes here!
