This is the most common failure on all teh VW DSG/Tiptronic transmissions, VW doesn't want to accept that there is a fault with all of them, even Japan and China made a big complain forcing to VW to fix thousands of cars with this particular issue.
I think it is leaking or ran out of ATF. Since all gears couldn't engage due the valve failed to engage every clutches. Sometime it is great if the car can show error code of that "check engine" indicator.

VW sure has one hell of a good marketing department. Nobody else could sell so many terrible cars. All companies make their share of bad ones, but yikes. My friend's 03 Jetta has been little more than a very expensive driveway ornament. And does anybody actually believe that they have the most vehicles on the road with 100,000 miles or more? Unless by on the road they mean on the back of a tow truck, not here in the U.S, that's for sure!
xxBlackpspxx European domestic market VWs are completely different animals. The crap they sell us in the states costs too much to begin with, breaks down and falls apart ALL the time, replacement parts are astronomically expensive, and they just end up breaking again anyway. I NEVER see Golfs, Jettas, Passats, or Touaregs on the road from about ten years ago because they're all rotting in junkyards. Even the Routan which was a solid Chrysler product to begin with, was branded and adapted poorly by VW, and nobody could afford to run them for more than seven or eight years. There are tons of American, Japanese, and even Korean cars from that era with lots of life left in them today. I haven't needed to put any money into my Chrysler product in terms of replacement parts (aside from normal wear items which I do myself) for 200,000 miles and 11 years now. It is a Daimler product, with many Bosch and Mercedes parts, so I am by no means a total euro hater, but I will never bring a VW home.
Yes, a golf is a golf, with minor differences between markets. Also, fewer TDI models are sold in the US than in Europe. There are many models sold in Europe that aren't available in the US; like the lupo/ fox, and polo, which are generally more reliable cars because they are cheap and basic. The Golf on the other hand, like the rest of the larger flagship models, are built to survive the average lease period and nothing more. Few people in the US drive old VWs, and those that think they are getting a good deal on a used one find out quickly why it was priced so low. There are always going to be stories about how people drive their particular car for twenty years on all original parts, but in general, VW owners in that category are outnumbered by owners of other makes.
Doug Beard lol the leasing period is 6-9 months and warranty here in germany is 2 years so they have to make them last longer otherwise VW would lose alot of money or rep. how do they have a good reputation at all if the cars are so bad that they break after 9 months?
Yes real man car with old reliable technology that anyone in the world can make it. Very few companies can make reliable automatic transmission. Allison, Aisin-Wagner/Toyota, Hundai, Mazda, and ZF. But none of them have reliable dual clutch transmissions. BorgnWagner/VW may be the only companies who put dualclutch transmissions for regular/daily car, not sport car that used once a week and once a month in shop.
