    You should do a version of this where the prize starts at $0, and every time the button is pressed, it kills that person, but adds $20 to the prize pool. See how many people sacrifice themselves for the group. Maybe even have the twist be that the ending prize is split between the people who pressed the button.

    @IONATVS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1077

    there is a slight “flaw” with this experiment from a game theory perspective-anyone who does the math would know that it is NEVER advantageous to anyone, including yourself, to press the button. Every time the button is pressed, the survivors’ expected value of winnings stays UNCHANGED, and the less times the button is pressed, the less chance you have of being eliminated and the less money you win if you do win. The ONLY reasons to press the button are ignorance (because surviving a button press SEEMS like it should increase your overall expected value even though it doesn’t) or malice.

    • @albertarvadottosen3512
      @albertarvadottosen3512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      Your expected winnings actually goes down. Pressing the button doesn’t change your probability of winning because the probability of dying balances out decrease in players. You have to multiply the chance of surviving the button press with the chance of winning. Formally: 1/(n-1) * (n - 1)/n = 1/n, where n is the number of players alive
      But the price pool decreases, so expected outcome decreases by 0.1$ every press.

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@albertarvadottosen3512 yes, i just phrased it differently-your expected winnings GIVEN you survive is the same, but you ALSO have a chance of dying. So even if you are on the winning side, you get no net benefit, and if you aren’t, obviously you get less. V_exp = V(W)*P(W|S)*P(S), with V(W) and P(S) decreasing linearly while P(W|S) increases linearly in lockstep with them.

      Thats what makes the experiment interesting because you expect people to act rationally but they don't

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I wouldn’t say so-the math is never explained to them, so I think a lot are under the FALLACY that it is selfish-but advantageous to push the button. A few probably figured it out and just pressed the button despite rationally knowing it’s the wrong move, and many others probably figured it out and as such just watched from the sidelines knowing it was both their best chance of success and the least harmful, but if you want to test “people doing the irrational thing” they need to KNOW what the rational strategy is.

      From a game theory perspective the best move is to not press the button. The chance that you survive a press and win with one less person is the same as winning before the press, but the prize pool is 10 dollars less. For instance if there are ten people left, you have a 9/10 chance of surviving a press, and a 1/9 chance of winning with 9 people alive, which multiplied together is 1/10, the same as winning with 10 people alive, but the prize pool is now $90 instead of $100.

      @voidboi2831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@centxiv even if it wasn’t a lie it doesn’t make any fucking sense. The money lowering and the death are related to eachother. If the button is “constantly depressed” then that would mean the button basically either is being clicked a lot or not being clicked, not both. So either it would work normally and people would die and the cost would lower, or neither would happen because it’s not being de-pressed so nothing happens as nothing is being pressed. This comment doesn’t make sense at all, unless you’re assuming that the cost lowering is somehow directly connected during the de-press and not the initial press, which is a stupid fucking assumption.

    Fun fact, pressing the button actually doesn't increase your chances to win at all. Each time the button is pressed, you have the same chance to die from it that you do to win with the current player count. Coupled with the decreased reward from every death, this means that pressing the button is always the incorrect choice. If we take it to the extreme, let's say there are only two people left; you and one other person. You have two choices, press the button and have a 50% chance to live and walk away with $10, *OR* wait out the remaining time, and have a 50% chance to walk away with $20. While it would require more tedious math, this logic applies no matter how many people are left.
    Because of this, it would've been better to make it impossible for the presser to be killed, which would leave what was probably the intended social experiment about greed.
    Though of course, some people just wanna watch the world burn, and will press the button anyway.

    Mathematically, pushing the button doesn't even give you a higher chance of winning money. Sure, if you live your odds go from 1/100 to 1/99, but the 1/100 chance of you dying cancels that out. So if you think about it there is no reason to push the button unless you just want to lower the prize pool.

      Infact, the eypected value of not pressing the button is always 10, while the value of pressing the button decreases from 9.9 at 100 players all the way down to 5, when there's only two players left. So the more you press the button the stupider it becomes.
      Another interesting fact: pressing the button continually until one person is left gives you a 0.01 chace of winning 10 dollars, putting the expected value of this strategy all the way down to 0.1

      Maybe as a bonus or a test of trust, 2 people know each others counters but they don't know their own, and they have to rely on each other to know how many people they can kill. Maybe that way it will keep the social experiment idea.

      @@candlewax2587 The problem with doing that is that your odds of winning never truly go up, but the pot goes down. Other than malevolence for the sake of malevolence, there's no good reason to push the button. Think of it this way: the odds of winning the full pot at the start is a 1/100 chance. If someone pushes the button, you have a 1/100 chance of being eliminated. If, at that point, nobody pushes the button, your odds of winning are 1/99. If someone pushes the button again, you have a 1/99 chance of getting eliminated. At that point, the odds of winning are 1/98, and pushing the button has a 1/98 chance of killing you. This is true all the way down; your odds of winning with two players left is 1/2, regardless of whether or not you push the button. The odds of you surviving to that point are miniscule, and it evens out to a 1% chance of winning. The only difference is that the further along you are in the chain, the smaller the pot is. It's a good social experiment, but not in the way it initially seems to be.

    this challenge is a fun one. There's always two types of people in all "youtube social experiment" videos, the "I'm here to make content/win" and the "I'm happy that I can participate/interact" the problem is that in any other challenge the latter is always in a disadvantage because the winner-fiends have the tools to win and will take the pacifism of the experiencers as an opportunity of easy prey.
    In all the "I left 100 players in X" or "Simulating civilizations in minecraft" there's always the people who just want peace and to have fun, but 5 hits with the sword do the trick so the people who leave are always the same.
    Now in this one, the tool the winner-fiends have to win is self destructive, the winner-fiends can't consistently kill without being killed, but the experiencers can consistently survive, as long as they don't press the button.

    • @Laszer271
      @Laszer271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      From the point of maximizing your profit you are even at disadvantage if you do press the button. At the beginning you have 1000$ and 1/100 chance of winning so we could say there is expected profit of 1000 * 1/100 = 10$, if someone presses the button, one person dies and the expected profit is 990 * 1/99 so still 10$. This means that no matter whether there is 100 people of you are in the final 10, your expected profit is always the same, however every time someone presses the button there is also a chance of you being kicked out of the game. Every button pressed reduces your chance in participating in the final lottery so the best strategy for maximizing your and everyone's profit is to just sit it out and not press the button.

    I think this is based on the short story “button, button” where (spoilers)
    A couple is given a button by a mysterious person and are told that if they press the button they will get $50,000, but a random person will be killed that they don’t know. They debate whether they should press it, and the boyfriend doesn’t want to, but the girlfriend does. Eventually the boyfriend leaves the house to go somewhere on a train, and the girlfriend presses the button. She then gets a call saying that the boyfriend was pushed in front of a train, and she says that they said it would be a random person she doesn’t know. In a plot twist, it says “Did you really know him?”, because of how much they argue.
    I thought that this was a coincidence because we just read it in school.

      2 kills: 1/98 chance of winning * 980 dollars = 10 dollars expected value.
      etc. until everyone is dead.
      Except the expected value actually goes down slightly because you're not only killing the other players, there's also a chance that you eliminate yourself from the game.
      0 kills: 10 dollars - (0 / 100 chance of eliminating yourself) = 10 dollars
      1 kill: 10 dollars - (1 / 100 chance of eliminating yourself) = 9.989... dollars

      ...
      100 kills: 10 dollars - (1 / 1 chance of eliminating yourself) = 9 dollars (that's the theoretical value, of course everyone is dead so the actual value is 0 dollars.)
      So pressing the button literally only has a negative outcome.
      EDIT: My calculations are probably off on this. Taking into account that probabilities should be multiplied, not substracted, the decrease in expected payoff would be linear from 10 down to 0 (which makes more sense anyway). So 1 kill = 9.9 dollars, 2 kills = 9.8 dollars, 3 kills = 9.7 dollars, etc.
