Honestly? With the Acolyte being what it was, I am way less critical of the Ahsoka series than I was at the time. I still have issues with certain choices, but that show was clearly made by people who loved Star Wars and wanted to bring their A game, and by people who felt it was an honor to be a part of a project as opposed to people who thought that Star Wars wasn't that good and needed to be fixed

I'm still very critical of what they did with Sabine
Her using the force nether works in character nor in universe
Also Sabine hiding the truth from Ezra really infuriates me.
This maybe a tangent but alot of these recent Disney projects many female characters like Sabine, Hera, Holdo, and more recently Vernestra Roe make decisions that get numerous people killed with no consequences or glossed over.

@@pbh9195 I think Sabine using the Force works within the universe.
Kanan Jarus said "the force resides in all living beings but you have to be open to it".
In a sense, everyone and everything is connected through the Force. Once Sabine opened her connection, she could use it. However dude her extremely weak connection she could barely do the basics. Obviously she can refine her connection. Unlike someone like Anakin who had a high potential but never refined his abilities so he was actually weaker in a lot of ways.
Thus explaining the whole M Count thing Jedi did. You had to have a certain amount or above that to be excepted into the Order.
I'll agree with that her using the Force doesn't add to her character apart from some plot stuff.

There are plenty of fair criticisms of this show, but I don’t believe that having to watch other shows to understand what’s going on is one of them for a multiple reasons. The first is that Ahsoka is an established character with plenty of rich backstory. Without the other shows, she doesn’t get her own standalone show. The second is that what is the point of a connected universe if you can’t, you know, connect them through various shows and movies? It’s what we used to love about Marvel but now feels like an easy way to bring shows down. I felt rewarded for having watched CW and Rebels

Sometimes it's good for a project to be a jumping on point and sometimes it isn't. Witcher 3 is an excellent jump on, Mass Effect 3 is not even though they designed it to be. The end of that trilogy is not a place for newcomers!
Ahsoka needed a lot of work to fix it but I think designing it for new people isn't the right call unlike Mando which is a separate thing. It's a star wars show afterall, it's made for star wars people not randomers with no investment.

  • @jaredpoon5869
    @jaredpoon5869 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

One of my issues with Thrawn is that there's a fine line between valuing your troops' lives and being rather complacent.
A good example of this is the TIE fighter sequence. Yes, I understand the goal was to delay them, but even if we say that TIE fighters are worse in atmosphere than in space, a TIE fighter vs someone who can't fly is a major advantage.
I don't buy the argument that killing Ahsoka and the others wouldn't have fit with his plan of returning home. As you say, he knows that Jedi are unpredictable. If you can (almost) guarantee their deaths by TIE fighter, then that removes them from the randomness equation.
If (in the head canon) we say that Thrawn was afraid that Ahsoka would summon the hyperspace whales, why wouldn't he be afraid to leave her there? If he thinks she can just summon hyperspace whales to get back home, then he definitely needs to kill her here and now.
Cause here's the thing: when Ahsoka + company inevitably return and stop Thrawn, we'll point to the scene where Thrawn could have killed them with TIE fighters and ask, "Why didn't he use more TIE fighters to stop them when he had the chance?"
I'll even throw in the head canon solution: The TIE fighters were in such poor repair that he either had only a few TIE fighters in flight condition, or he reasoned that he needed a minimum number to protect the ship when it returned to the galaxy.

Watching this helpful revisitation of Ahsoka has cemented it for me: the story “Last Known Trajectory” is what really happened to Ezra and Thrawn after Rebels, not this pablum from Feloni. Imagine: someone working on their own, for whom English is a second language, writes a novel-length fanfic anyone can read - for free - that’s 20 times more engaging and satisfying than what Disney, with all those resources, can even begin to muster. Ezra and Thrawn forced to work together to survive…I’ll think I’ll just go read it again.
p.s. Ahsoka might also have been better if it had actually been mostly about Ahsoka.

Yeah, having thought about this exact story since the Rebels finale the choices made are just so disappointing, and the characters feel only tangentially connected to their infinitely superior animated selves. You know what wouldve been cooler. If the Sith girl slashed Sabine and we saw it from the back thinking damn she died. Then they do a frodo from Lotr and her Beskar armour protected her. She is stunned from the force of the attack but not dead.
We saw something similar in the 2nd season of Mando where each hit from the darksaber clearly had force behind it pushing him back even though it hit the beskar.
Itd be a cooler fakeout, it would explore Beskar, a material audiences are familiar with, and show how tough the sith girl is that she can knock out someone in Beskar.
Then she realises oh the girl is alive and Baylan explains Mandalorians often wear Beskar that they often paint and it tougher against lightsaber attacks, to aim for the points between armour next time.
Then maybe when he fights Sabine, we show his strength as he shattered her breastplate. She is shocked and he explains some forcewielders csn use the force to shatter even the strongest of materials (it was a force power called shatterpoint). It would also just show how powerful Baylan Schol is compared to even Ahsoka, that he knows this powerful force power and would bring back stakes in a fight with beskar, which is good against most jedi and sith but not the toughest

Good analysis. I do agree with you with one HUGE thing when it comes to TV Shows in the streaming world. The gap between seasons. There is too many gaps between seasons these days and it is. unacceptable. Once upon a time it was every year and as time went along 2 years then 3 years. How much longer per season. Perhaps instead of them producing multiple shows that they should focus on just one that goes year to year. That might help with both consistently and quality.

If you told me when i first heard that Snips was getting her own show that i wouldn't finish it, I would never believe it.
I stopped watching when the episode ended with Ahsoka (and Sabine? I dont remember) jumping into hyperspace to go to the unknown regions and Hera stays behind. The Ghost, Ezra's home, just sits there while a mass produced jedi ship gets to make the jump.
Hera, who's journey started and rebels and could be perfectly bookended here. Kanan asked her when she would finally feel like she's done enough for the rebellion. Hera, who one could argue was married to the rebellion and oftej only after its needs were met did she turn to get family, could've now said enough and picked her family first.
Kanan was always second, but after he died Hera questioned if joining the rebellion was even worth it. Now, the republic doesn't really need her, she could choose to finally cast it off and go after the family her and Kanan grew together. Instead, she watches them go.
And like, yeah it's not Hera's show. But it could be. I am hard pressed to believe that this is the best idea they had for Ahsoka's first show. Change a couple of lines in the Mandolorian and let her do something that fits her better. They created this connection between Ahsoka and Thrawn when one already existed between Hera and him. This show feels like it wants to be an ahsoka show, but it gets distracted by Rebels stuff. So instead of a great Ahsoka show and a great Rebels Reunion, we got a subpar version of both.

One defense of "required viewing" before watching Ahsoka is that Disney+ did have a section of handpicked episodes from TCW and Rebels under the header of "Ahsoka Essentials" (or something similar) when the series first came out for newcomers to get to know Ahsoka berore they watched the show

I feel like most of this show’s problems really do come down to the fact that it’s not finished yet. I think once season 2 is out, we’ll feel a lot better about Ahsoka, but the insanely long wait between seasons is ludicrous when they leave off on a big cliffhanger like that.

Honestly, the most fascinating part of the show for me was Baylan. I found him to be such an intriguing character in terms of what he could potentially bring to the greater mythos, and Ray Stevenson clearly brought his A-Game with the character. Honestly it reminded me of Adam Driver with Kylo Ren, where we only really have hints and allusions to his backstory in the films, but Driver's acting is what REALLY sells the character. I really hope they keep Baylan around and establish more of his story with Shin, because I feel like they have the potential to be some of the most unique villains in Star Wars.
Otherwise, I think Ahsola is a show with a lot of really good ideas and I do hope a potential 2nd season addresses some of the issues this one had. As it stands though, I think its just okay.

Ray Stevenson was great in the role, but he's so criminally underwritten. There should never be a situation where by the end of the season the audience is unable to concretely define the new main villain's motivations, goals, etc. aside from the vaguest gestures

A very big issue I had with the show you didn't really mention was how they handled the return of thrawn and ezra
First of all, nothing really happened to them in the decade they were gone. Yeah, ezra joined those aliens, thrawn got new paintjobs for his troopers and got the great mothers to help him (somehow, not sure if it was explained why), but so much more could have been done. Maybe thrawn ‏‪and ezra would be forced to work together in order to survive. Maybe they discover in there some sort of threat that could put the star wars galaxy in danger. Maybe they find some sort of ancient secret or ezra discovers a new way to use the force. And of course it could be a bunch of other ideas I didn't mention. The point is that so much could have been done, but instead we are forced to believe that they were stuck in a stasis throughout all that time.
Secondly, once they are actually found, the don't get to do much. With ezra, first of all his reunion with sabine feels very anticlimactic, like she hasn't seen him in over a decade, he is described as the only family she has left, and she risked the fate of the galaxy in order to save him, but when she actually finds him it feels they hug like friends who haven't seen each other in a few weeks, it should have been way more emotional. And after that ezra mentions that he doesn't need a lightsaber because he has the force, only to go on to use a blaster and next episode to use a lightsaber, so not really sure what was the deal with that. With thrawn, he doesn't get a chance to prove how smart he is and that he is someone that could rebuild the empire. I guess his plan makes enough sense, however he never gets the chance to do something really clever, mainly because he can always rely on the great mothers to do everything he needs. I guess we'll have to wait and see how smart he actually, even though we should have seen it in this show since we've waited long enough

I loved Clone Wars and Liked a lot of rebels, eventhough it made many side-characters extremely incompetent. But that was fine for what it was - a show directed at kids. I feel like the material they based Ahsoka on is much more suited for the kind of audience Andor was written for - which made all the cartoon-y moments feel a lot more noticeable in a bad way for me.
Also, I feel like the story was alright, but could have been much much more. Its also not like there wasnt any (non-canon) source material for the plot they wanted to create, which fit the themes much better imo.
Overall, it was a popcorn-comfort-tv series. And I personally had wished for a drama series with questionable morals for ahsoka and sabine, with more ezra and thrawn, and more competent side/background characters. that way, our protagonists and antagonists would have felt less lucky and more powerful, and the show would have more mystery, allowing for exciting rewatchs down the line, where now i dont really bother with that

However, also tbh I agree with the post credit scene but I would have kept the ending credit scene with Saben & Asoka along with Anakin showing the possible future for SW like what if Anakin is not just to help Asoka but to be the “Next father of the force” since he is the “chosen one”. I honestly don’t wanna give the Acolyte any spotlight with their BS of creating life with the force which takes away anything special of Anakin

Patterson removed a lot of redundant footage and made everything just “gel” better together. It’s not perfect by any means but it is impressive what a single editor can do to improve a show. While I don’t disagree that Ahsoka’s arc isnt perfect, I still think it was done very well. The thing is, Ahsoka’s character flaw in this series has nothing to do with the events of the series itself. It was always about Anakin. Her failing to save him, and her fear that because he fell, she and other force users could and would fall too. Her flaw was set up in Mando and BoBF, where she advices Mando to abandon Grogu. She has fallen i to the same trapping as the Jedi of old, forbidding attachment rather than learning how to deal with those emotions in a healthy way.
Ahsoka giving up because Baylan has the map doesn’t make sense. Sure Thrawn coming back is bad, but that’s nothing compared to the time when Sidious was alive and well. Why would she give up against a situation that’s objectively still better than the age of the Empire.

There is some good, but too much feels like Star Wars is a sticker put onto the show just to make money. There isn’t the same passion and excitement around the people making Star Wars like there was when the Clone Wars and Rebels shows were coming out. There’s a lot more criticisms too, not all bad, but still enough useless fluff to be noticeable
