Eaten by the Monster of Love may be the most underrated pop song of all time from the most underrated band of all time. Can’t get enough of it, incredible performance here.
And i remember their song angst in my pants on the radio and when i saw valley girl ack in high school. I disovered eaten by the monster of love in valley girl a couple of years ago when i hadnt seen it since like 83-84 high school year i think, which in my opinion is by far the best song these guys did. The part in Valley Girl where the song plays, along with the intro to the movie song by is PERFECT EDITING..( most of the obscure songs in valley girl by Bonnie hays are some INCREDIBLE songs. ) .Great show. And finally I Predict I dont think I remember but im not sure is A great song also. Plus all thses off-the-wall songs in 70's. Great discovery by me.
If means nothing. It couldn't be so it wasn't. And incidentally, no, as the internet is only there to make useless shitheads like Lily Allen, George Ezra, Adele & Beiber that.
For forking sure. This guy was killing it. Mad dogging Dick Clark sporting the Charlie Chaplin/Oliver Hardy Stash, style points all Day, and the and sounded fierce.
I gotta give Dick props for not glossing over the album title; I think he got a kick out of it. And to say he doesn't put much faith in Rolling Stone? That's pretty badass.
i just saw these guys a few days ago live for the first time at the walt disney concert hall, i hope i get to see them live a million more times :) long live the brothers mael!!!!
These guys are absolute geniuses of music& theater!! Especially Ron!! Its like he already had an idea how the footage was going to look before it was shot and knew how FUCKING FUNNY this shit was gonna look!!! And they're both musical Masters their day of recognition has DEFINITELY come!! These dudes invented Meming and social media imagery long before it was ever dreamed up!! Sparks is such an incredible band!!! I hope you guys are still doing music well past turning 100!! Cuz to see these kats today you'd never think they're both in their 70's!!!?? They've got very youthful spirits and I can see that carrying them for many more years to come!! I wanna catch these guys in concert!!! Rock long and PROSPER Sparks!!!
Couldn't agree more. Incredible. Been following them for more than nearly 50 years mate. They are amazing. And so youthful in there 70s. Miss them when they are gone.!!!!!!
Thats how i sort of discovered this band , but i do remember the song angst in my pants, the monster of love is their best. Right where the put that song in the movie valley girl was perfect!
I have never seen this Sparks footage before. Really enjoyed it. I went to a couple of their gigs where they did a great version of No 1 song in Heaven.
Can we talk about Russell's voice? He goes from falsetto to bass to tenor. Able to adapt to all genres, pop rock punk. Amazing instrument. Plus his genuine buoyant friendly open personality. And smart!
i had this record (a fairly large acrylic, wax or in the "super old days"- shellac disk that required a special player with a needle and tone arm to decode the processed signals LOL)...I remember when my dad first saw the album cover (with the two dudes...one in a wedding dress)..he straight up audibled "WTF?" i dont remember much else from the conversation LOL ahhh to be the son of a USMC MP..
1982! The year I graduated, and I never heard of these guys until the mid 80s! Lol..I was into Michael Jackson, Cheap Trick, Hall and Oates, Pat Benatar lol.. then new wave, alternative rock starting playing more on MTV, and I was hooked! Now MTV keeps playing that Ridiculousness show over and over or some movie with music. What's the point of MTV still being on? The first time I saw MTV was in '81, Huey Lewis and the News was on.. I thought that's the strangest name for a music group! Lol.
I'm always quoting this, only other Sparks heads know what I'm on about.. highly relevant in the last 18 months, Trump would probs have confirmed this theory 🦠
um... i'm pretty sure they are playing along with a track. the vocals, the drum playing (doesn't hit the cymbals very hard and when he does he chokes it) and the sound of the drums that cannot be reproduced on a percussion set (7:34 and 7:36), and the fade out. this is totally not live and I think Ron does not like it...
I don't know if there's an expression in English, but in Swedish we've got "allt klär en skönhet" = anything becomes a beauty. I don't know... But anyway 😉😉😉😂 Oh Russell... 💕In this case a victim of the eighties.
I played in a band in Calgary and one of the other bands had a guy (guitarist and backup singer) whose facial expressions made people watch him. Kind of interesting, but added nothing to the music. Here it works somewhat.

Totally agree, I'm obsessed in 2024 ❤
Dick: "Who is the older?"
Ron: "You are."
Awesomest burn in TV history!
Yeah, that was a brilliant answer! XD
Everything is coming as an answer from Ron's mouth: "don't try to use these big words on us".
Ron was savage 😆
Dick Clark loved Sparks
And DC just totally rolled with it. Props to the man for promoting a group he believed in.
Clark had a great sense of humor about it too which shows how secure he was with himself
If the internet was a thing in 1982, these guys would have been megastars
They were superstars in Europe

Is this the most underrated band, ever?
Exactly, but they aren't mainstream
For forking sure.
This guy was killing it.
Mad dogging Dick Clark sporting the Charlie Chaplin/Oliver Hardy Stash, style points all Day, and the and sounded fierce.
yes, they are.
In top 10
Who was brought here by Valley Girl in 2019?
God Ron Mael is a legend. Just the coolest guy on the stage and spent the first 20ish seconds of the song walking over slowly and starting to clap 😂
"Who is the oldest?"
"You are"
*SHOTS FIRED*
Dick Clark had Sparks on American Bandstand quite regularly. He was no dummy - Sparks was great TV!
Oh my God, I love Ron. That's an intro for the ages.
Gotta give Clark credit, he was a good sport about the age joke.
he was glad Ron pull that one up beatifully
Ron's face in the audience is the best!!!
LOL at it all the time!!!
I gotta give Dick props for not glossing over the album title; I think he got a kick out of it. And to say he doesn't put much faith in Rolling Stone? That's pretty badass.
02:14 "They're gonna stop Saturday night, so you better have fun now, I predict!"
In 2020 that really came true.
Cold beer and pretzels takes care of cancer!
Yep
only prophets have such well manicured moustaches
Only took 40 years.
So weird huh ?
i just saw these guys a few days ago live for the first time at the walt disney concert hall, i hope i get to see them live a million more times :) long live the brothers mael!!!!
That was the jonas brothers.
Talent is an asset and Ron & Russell surely has it
Got the quote, sir. Brilliant and appropriate.

It was really cool seeing Dick Clark have fun with the guys. Really good video.
11 people are missing out on the brilliance that is SPARKS.
It's high time I listened to as much of their discography as possible.
Classic song used in valley girl. The good ole days.80s
Thats how i sort of discovered this band , but i do remember the song angst in my pants, the monster of love is their best. Right where the put that song in the movie valley girl was perfect!
My memory must be playing with me. I could swear I remember them singing this on SNL in 1982.
Danny Deveto had them on as his guest. SLN blocks it, every time anyone post it. I believe they sand Angst in my Pants, and another.
@@gahloot The other song was Mickey Mouse.
Maybe , Sparks became popular in 1974
Golden era! I wish this show in HD!
In my opinion, Ron is an excellent Actor with impeccable comic timing. Not everyone can be that quick
80s were the fashion era for the ages!!!!!!!!
That is one great perfomer! No dancing, just hanging out playing a keyboard.
Two of the best Sparks songs , wish i was more aware of these two songs when they were originally released ❤😢
I envy these guys (especially Ron)...
Being complete weirdos for five decades and getting paid/getting famous
Lol. Great gimmick on Ron’s part. Check it out live.
Bahahahahahaha so true
Hill air I us! Great to see how spontaneous and witty the guys are.
Thanks for collating such a great Sparks collection of rarities
Nice gold jacket. It's kinda similar to the one Martin Fry of ABC wore. Hey, thats a good thing:)
ABC, another terrific act
Abc..sparks fans...lots of 80s bands are influenced by sparks end of
Ron has such a beautiful smile.
They're a great band!

That album cover. Pmsl. I love these guys.
I have never seen this Sparks footage before. Really enjoyed it. I went to a couple of their gigs where they did a great version of No 1 song in Heaven.

Great. Thank you.
Talent is an asset you've got to understand it!!
Talent is an asset...for me to poop on!
Can we talk about Russell's voice? He goes from falsetto to bass to tenor. Able to adapt to all genres, pop rock punk. Amazing instrument. Plus his genuine buoyant friendly open personality. And smart!
@@garysofko THEIR THE BEST BAND EVER !

Very catchy songs. should have been big hits in the UK.
All over the world!!
The way Russell is stroking the microphone
*DEAD*

The 2nd time I saw Sparks. So fun. This was on American Bandstand. :)
Amazing.
Just love Ron.
I remember this song on a 1982 K-Tel records Compilation
Daniel Smathers Yes! I still have the cassette ...Depeche Mode -“Dreaming of Me”.... Kim Wilde “Kids in America”... wore that thing out.
Had this too
Bless you for posting this. I think/talk about this clip CONSTANTLY.
Mr gahloot, it is you I Salute...!
Amazing for live! lol
oh ty for postin this gem i laugh so hard
did he say 1976? Wow older than I thought. eaten by the monster flashback to valley girl.
And 1972-73
They actually recorded an album in 1969, produced by Todd Rundgren. But at that time the band's name was Half Nelson, I believe.
Sparks!
I've Always Like The Way Ronald Looked Uninterested In What He Was Doing While Preforming ... Killer 👍🏽
YOU ARE. oh snap!!
Kick Ass! L.A.’s Own
These guys were awesome, why didn’t they get big ?
Are awesome and they are huge for their demographic
didnt i see this at disneyland? yes i did, long fn time ago..
Ron Is creepy cool.
Valley girl
I was there by the way.
Just got eaten by the monster of love :(
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I looked to long at that guy's gold suit and I was temporarily blinded. Hey now!
Dick: "This is going to be your year"
He was right, just 39 years too early ...
genius performance, the green suit rules.
Valley Girl
Ron acts as eccentric as he looks
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
haha that was great
My first rock concert (rock? anyway...)
“COLD BEER AND PRETZELS TAKES CARE OF CANCER!” :D
Homer Simpson's certainly not gonna die of it then.
I'm always quoting this, only other Sparks heads know what I'm on about.. highly relevant in the last 18 months, Trump would probs have confirmed this theory 🦠
I'm pretty sure Those Annoying Post Brothers were named after them.
Valley Girl soundtrack
look at that mfing outfit dude has on....damn i miss being a kid
🤩🤩🤩🤩
the songs is good, but damn.. what are they doing on the stage??
performing
What's the point of miming?
You can tell it's mimed since it's identical to the track itself
Where is Mickey Mouse??
"In the pants region!"
There from California. But they reminded me of a polish or Netherlands band certainly not American
They're not from England.
Rare footage of Talking Heads before they were Talking Heads
Who is the older 😂
I had to laugh when dick asked who was older of the brothers and Ron said you were haha lmfao
There has not been a decade where Ron or RUSSELL have looked bad. Ugh!
I used to see these guys in the 70s.
um... i'm pretty sure they are playing along with a track. the vocals, the drum playing (doesn't hit the cymbals very hard and when he does he chokes it) and the sound of the drums that cannot be reproduced on a percussion set (7:34 and 7:36), and the fade out. this is totally not live and I think Ron does not like it...
No shit Sherlock
and every band that ever played on AB
Wow genius, every band on that show lip synched
That golden suit is really the worst but the guys are both so cute and funny.....
Lucky 2016:
the suits are the best -
all of 'em!!!

Skip>>>>Wild
:D
The lip syncing is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, people couldn't dance for shit in the 80's. By how times have changed. 😄
Yep, now they’re 💯 % worse shite.
In 2020, most people can't dance so i don't know wtf you are saying
@@SuperBoomshack
You mean YOU can't dance mister WTF. So ONLY speak for yourself.
TikTok dances don't count
In this case it's in the pants region😂
This band scares the shit out of me. So creepy.
Stop saing Ron looks like
Hitler >:[
When his moustache was trimmed real small, his Jewish friends would never call. So he cut it into a Ronald Colman shape the following year.
Chaplin. Not Hitler. Chaplin
Lip sync :(
Sparks are good and I like their music but these two songs are like b sides 🤔
