How does that work in minor scales? Do the scale degrees have different functions?

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It works the same in minor keys. The scale degrees function in the same way and the diatonic chords/triads have the same functions (tonic, predominant, dominant). The only difference is that the TYPE/CHARACTER of the chords is different. For example, the Four chord in a minor key is a minor chord (in a major key it is a major four). The rest of the chords are i, ii dim, iii, iv, V, VI, vii dim.

Thank you very much for this amazing video! Very well made and amazing explanation!
I have 1 question. What is the function of the iii chord (3 chord)?

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Very good question! The three chord can function in TWO different ways. Depending on how it's used, the iii chord can be either a Tonic function OR a Dominant function chord. That's kind of why I left it out of putting it into One category. If you emphasize the third/fifth scale degree then it will sound more like a Tonic function chord. If you emphasize the fifth/seventh scale degree then it sounds more like a Dominant function chord.

it dosnt really have a function..you could used it to function.
      It's just SOUNDS...
      But to answer your question....
It's helpful to break the MAJOR scale in 1/2..or where the semi tones
      are at 3/4....and 7/8
      1......2........3..4
      5.....6.........7..8
From the V chord....second arpeggio to the OCtave...it's the samething
      as 3 into 4
      E into F....or B into C.
Apply the same concept to any dominant chord
becuase there just Maj3 stack below a diminished chord.
in a nutshell play a diminished chord into a chord
if you stack a b3 below it...it'll simply be full diminished. ( all b3 intervals)
The same happens with AUGMENTED chord...becuase
      it's ALL MAj3 intervals....C ,E. G#
      C into C#.....E into F.....G# into A
Hence DIFFERENT SCALES...there's common and not so common.
No right way or wrong way...just TOOLs to HELP YOU
You can use this as a GUIDE
KEYS are just PITCH...if you comprehend it in C MAJOR/Amin.
The samething will happen in other KEYS ( PITCH)
      The BASIC
      A min.........D min E min
Amin Dmin E7 A Harmonic min
      A min D7 E7 A melodic min
      E Maj into A..it's just G# into A
      D maj itno G it's just F# into G
      Common chord progression
      A min.....G Maj.......F Maj.......E7 into A min.
The E7 is baarrowed from the melodic min /Harmonic min
      C Maj....D7 into G7 into C MAJ
      from F to G# is a b3 intervals...
      There's different scales....
      C Harmonic MAJOR ( C ion b6 =Ab) ' F lyd b3
      A Harmonic min ( A aeo maj7 = G#) = F lydian b3 Mix b2
      Notice...i just wrote E into F ( I didnt define what type of chord F is/could be)
C Maj into F min Ab G7 into C MAJOR...
      Do the samething .
      E Maj A min C Maj B7 into E
You can play also play A lyd b3 over the A min ..
      it's just D# dim /B.... D# into E (dont over thing it.)
in a nutshell the second half of that MODE is
      #4 5.....6......7.8.........
sort of like the same INTERVAL as the first half of a major scale
      7 1.....2.....3...4
counting from A min...( the first half has a b3) Lyd b3
      or Melodic min #4..........
      so it's this.....G#....then F#, G#.......then D# , F#, G#
There's other scales ..such as Harmonic min b2 or melodic min b2
      example...A Harmonic min b2 ( phygian Maj7) = Bb lyd #6
      stack as 1. 3. 5. 7 or 1, 3, 5, #6..or 1, #4, #6....
The so call italian...Franch or German.
Most of the time it'll just get INSERTED..
it'll sound as if you cycle down to the 4th
      you can do this...
      A min Bb maj7 C maj into F maj7 D min G7 into C MAJOR..
      it's a bit long....just remove chords..as you wish.
      A min B maj7 G7 into C Major
instead of A min D min G7 into C Major
or Amin Db maj7 G7 into C Maj
it's helpful you know other scales....beucase you'll simply
be more fmailar with different chord progression combinations
      or CREATE YOUR OWN..chord progression.
You dont have to learn all the scales...
You use the SIMPLE concept of playing
      a dim or augmented chord into a CHord....Major or min...or a TONIC
stack a maj3 or b3 below the dim chord...it'll all work
if you wish....( You dont always have to play into a TONIC chord)
      You can play.....C Maj...C# dim into D min....E min F Maj G7 into C MAjor.
      if you want...
or other chords....A min Bbdim into B min E7 into A min
      oe C Maj C# 7 or aug into F# min B min E7 into A min or A MAJOR
      or A min G#7 into C# min D Maj B min E7 into A min
or Amin Bb aug to G min C min F Maj E min A min...
      ect
or I can those so cal Harmonic scales like this... ( the 5 BLACK notes)
      A aeo maj7 = Harmonic min ( G#)
      D dor Maj7 = melodic min C#
      E phy Maj = ( harmonic min D#
      G mix Maj7 = Ionian ( circle of 5th) F#
      B loc Maj7 = harmonic min b2, b5 ( A#)
it's people shuffle it it....play the different scales from the same ROOT.
      such as A
These other scales use the same concept ...play a Maj7 or leading tone)
There's modes from within the various harmonic scales.
      Aeo b2.....aeo b5....aeo #4......or dor b2...dor #4....or dor b5
      aeo...........................................dor ( dorian has Maj6)
      harmonic min melodic min
harmonic min b2 melodic min b2
Harmonic min b5 melodic min b5
Harmonic min #4 melodic min #4
      Harmonic min b2, b5 melodic min b2, b5
      They're just 7 notes scale
The MAJOR/natrual min...is just ONE out of many.

@@Jygge different scale will overlap ..that's all
      example....C Maj.....C# dim into D min chord
if you stack Maj3 below it...it'll just be C Maj A7 into D min
if play b3 below it................it''ll just be C Maj Bb full dim into D min
if you play the C# as aug...it'll just be A. C#, F augment
      to F# harmonic min...ect...or C#7 into F#
      F# min....B7 C#7 = F# melodic min
If you familar with A Harmonic MAJOR/F# harmonic min...ect
you could sub the full dim or D min/dim or E7 into A min
      you can also do this...
      C Maj....C#7 into F# min B min C# min D7 E7 into A min

2:32 but where in the galaxy is the iii? It is the only one missing in the circel. Does that make him extra special?

    • @reneestalmer4285
      @reneestalmer4285 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The iii is in the same spot as the vi or just a little closer to the I. you can go from the I to the iii to the vi and then to the IV. If you do I to vi to iii to IV it doesn't sound quite right. also you can just do I to iii to IV. hope this helps.
