It really makes sense how there’s a lot of divide between preference of the og and remakes. A lot of factors go into the strong and weak parts of respective releases. Og Hxh has a tone of experimentation that sticks closer to the feeling that togashi puts out whenever the relative scene comes up (yorknew city arc). The new one is more consistent and polished with a majority of the adaptation it does but that also means that it’s not as flexible to experimentation. With nge, love both versions but they bring different vibes. animation and direction on the two are so different on a ideological level that I can’t really disagree with either (tho I love og’s heaviness, especially in the mass production fight)
I think both stand out from their manga counterparts. But regardless of whether it's better or worse, I appreciate this vision of respecting the proposal of both and their particularities, instead of this boring talk about everything from one era to another being superior, which is generally much more against modern animation, but I like to hit both sides because the superior era speech is idiotic in any circumstance.
@@giulyanoviniciussanssilva2947 Absolutely! For the hxh animes both stand firmly as realized projects and merit themselves from the source material. Fun fact about HxH and Salior Moon. Togashi was actually directly involved in creating the first adaptation. Hence why even though it's not a shot for shot accurate adaptation like 2011. It understood the world and characters a lot better than you'd initially realize. For Sailor Moon the first two seasons of the remake were so bad that they completely changed the staff involved and got the part of Toei that handles Prety Cure Franchise (the spiritual successor to Sailor Moon who honestly should have gotten the project from the start). And their one requirement from the head of the Pretty Cure Franchise was that they specifically could throw out the 3d transformation sequences and just not reuse any of the assets from the previous two seasons. The only thing they kept were the va.
This was a great episode, if only to show how old I am. I began getting into anime in 1990 and Ranma 1/2 was one of the first animes I ever watched and purchased. I still have many episodes on VHS. I do think the new adaptation is really good, basically distilling the primary points of the original show without filler episodes (although the fillers did lend to more character development, and there were seven TV seasons, plus movies and the original OVA). And Sailor Moon is an obvious choice for old vs new although as others have commented on, the animation and transformation scenes did change in subsequent seasons after fan feedback. The original Eva was groundbreaking but ultimately hamstrung by budget issues of Studio Gainax, which was failing while it was being made. The remake of Eva had no such restrictions. If I were to suggest some others, Rumiko Takahashi's other works are not bad to look at since many of them have been redone since the 80s/90s, some most recently. Urusei Yatsura was already mentioned and Inuyasha was redone. But the one that audiences may not know is the "Mermaid Saga" which was a straight up horror story about the price of immortality. The original series was a short OVA and never released digitally in the states so it's hard to find now (I still have the VHS copies). There was a remake 15 or so years later that I think is interesting but just not as good and visceral as the original adaptation of the manga. There are a lot more series that have just continued on over time than had straight up remakes that could be explored ("Jo Jo Bizarre Adventure", the "Tenchi Muyo!" franchise, "One Piece", "Dragonball", "Pokemon", etc) where art styles and CG began replacing older animation techniques.
Curt definitely has a point with Ranma abt the original showing the relationship better than the remake panda fight but I also don't think it's necessary. Unless your friend is just showing you a clip in which case they'd probably use the remake anyway and just tell you what was happening
Part of the reason the scene is set up that way is that the audience isn't supposed to be let on to the fact that Ranma and the Panda are child and father. They are supposed to be as bewildered as the bystanders watching the fight. If you watched OG Ranma, you already know the story, but anyone under the age of 40 may not have ever watched it before.
The thing about the transformation scene in the Sailor Moon remake is that it changes animation style after season 2 due to mixed reactions. Toei Animation has been experimenting heavily with 3D CGI animation in a lot of their series with a few exceptions. The transformation scenes, especially in later parts of the remake (S3, Eterna, and Cosmos), get just as good as the OG or even better in some instances. They also give characters that didn't get transformation scenes in the classic transformation scenes in the remake like Sailor Saturn.
Honestly, while the fight is better in the remake, I much prefer the setting of the original. The colours, the rain(which ties into Ranma and his father being transformed), and the beautiful reflections in the rain slicked roads.
It was interesting to see how the Sailor Moon remake evolved in terms of animation and transformation scenes. It didn't start out strong with the animation, but it did get better. It would make an interesting video to see the evolution of its animation and art style. Also, Saint Seiya got a remake in a completely different animation style as well by Toei Animation. It was CGI completely, and so was their Space Pirate Captian Harlock anime movie. Toei Animation around that time was experimenting with 3D CG animation.
