======= "Coat Of Arms" LYRICS =======
    At dawn envog arrives
    Morning of October 28th
    “No day” proven by deed
    Descendants of Sparta,
    Athens and Crete!
    Look north, ready to fight
    Enemies charge from the hills
    To arms! Facing defeat!
There’s no surrender! There’s no retreat!
    Time after time
Force their enemies back to the line
Call to arms banners fly in the wind
    For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading “Freedom or death!”
    Blood of king Leonidas
    Air raid pounding the land
Bombers are flying both day and night
    Endure six days of rain
Dropped by invaders bomb raid in vain
Strike hard, the tables have turned
Drive them back over the hills
    At arms! Just like before
    Soldiers, civilians, Hellas at war
    By theire own hand
Forced the enemy out of their land
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
    For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading “Freedom or death!”
    Blood of king Leonidas
Just like their ancestors ages ago
Fought in the face of defeat
    Those three hundred men
    Left a pride to uphold
    Freedom of death in effect
    Then, now again
Blood of heroes saving their land
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
    For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading “Freedom or death!”
    Blood of king Leonidas
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
    For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading “Freedom or death!”
    Blood of king Leonidas

We have a joke in Greece:
Mussolini stated that, since Greece was small and not so well protected, the invasion would be so easy that by the noon he would be drinking coffee in Acropolis (historic fact).
After a few months, a coffee guy goes
to an Italian military officer and tells him: "Tell Benito Mussolini that his coffee in Acropolis is getting cold."

Finland has a similar one, but not really a joke: Stalin said that invading Finland would be over in a week and he had already told the Russian troops to greet Swedish border officers with a kind tone. Then they suffered millions of losses and ultimately failed to invade Finland.

My grandfather was an italian soldier but he didn't want to kill greeks because there's a sort of friendship between Greece and Italy. Anyway, when Italians lost the campaign he ran in a farm and ate the same food that was given to the pigs. One day he was rescued by the farmer and he remained in Greece for 5 years until the war was over. When he got back to Italy he invited those greeks to join his wedding and he even learned greek.
Edit: He was in the Pinerolo Division, the only division that refused to lay down their arms against the Germans in the continental Greece. He was a Sergent of that division and after 8th September 1943 they fought side by side with the Greece resistance until they were sent back to Italy in 1945.

They didn't only fought against the Italians but also against the circumstances that all where against them . Greeks had little food and equipment in compare to the Italians , the temperature up in the mountains was something you can't imagine . Italians bombarded the Greek lines heavily bad couldn't break them . They sent my papou back wounded from schrapnels and doctors in hospital told him he also had major frostbites on both feet and that they had to cut the feet of. My grandfather didn't let em cut them off and after some time he healed completely. He lived until his late 70's. 🇬🇷

I'm Greek, my grandfather fought at the WW2 at the fight of Crete, Mylopotamos. The german troops were dropping with parachutes, thousands of them. He told me back in 2000 before he die that they were so many that the sky turned dark as they were covering the sun light. He got captured after this lost fight and managed to go back home after a couple of years in the end of the war since they were trading prisoners. My grandma and the rest of the family thought he got killed so they already had his funeral etc, yet he turned back home to north Greece like a living dead. When i asked once at a christmas dinner if he killed anyone his face went red and his eyes went full of tears and the only reply i got from him was "my kid the soul of a human turns into abyss during war". I was 10 by this time and i didn't understand much. Now 20 years later i understand that the guy took out a couple of lives that he didn't really want to. War is a bad thing with no winners.

My grandpa(same person of the story above) was a baby and he was crying so my grand grandmother left him under a bush in order to secure the safety of the caravan during night traveling from Turkish/Bulgarian scouts. The leader of the caravan asked her where the kid was and he went back with the horse to find him and get him. When this guy died my grandpa was crying on his funeral calling him father. His real father was captured and forced from turks to fight for them at middle east so my grand grandmother had to leave her home with few things and 5 kids alone. This happened during 1913-1918.

    (Correct Text)
Fun fact: When the Germans entered Greece through the "neutral" country of Bulgaria and threatened to envelope the entire Greek army while it was fighting the Italians in Albania, the Greek general surendered only to the Germans. He was able to negotiate with the Germans to not take any soldiers prisoners and to even let the officers keep their sidearms. The Greek army was too proud to surrender to the Italians as they viewed them as an enemy they defeated. The German high command also generally respected the Greek army for lasting against a country with so much more resources so long and there are some mentions that Hitler blames the failure of Barbarossa to the delay because of the detour to the Balkans that the German army had to take it in order to secure Greece for the Italians.

On 24 and 25 March 1942 in Athens declared the first strike in occupied Europe. On April 16 declared another strike ended on April 21 with meeting the demands of the strikers. On 24 February and 5 March 1943 declared major strike while the IPU organized massive demonstrations in Athens in order to abort the impending mobilization Greek workers to be sent to Germany. The strike led to cancellation of plans for mobilization. [53] [54] In the meantime, on February 27, 1943, died the poet Kostis Palamas. His funeral turned into a spontaneous popular protest of the people of Athens against the invaders. [55] Large rallies were held in Thessaloniki and other cities in Northern Greece on July 10, 1943 against the alleged expansion of the Bulgarian occupation zone. For the same reason there was a big strike in Athens on July 22, 1943. The massive demonstration was violently treated by the occupying forces, killing a total of thirty protesters. [56]

The Greek officer who was appointed for it's defence Lt D. Kaslas had given only one order. "No one moves from his position ,the enemy will only pass if even the last one of us fall". The German Army arrived in Athens in April 27th, but because Metaxas gave the order in 1940 to fight until even the last man falls, Crete didn't fall until June. That's why Hitler couldn't do anything against USSR before the end of June.

    • @Seriona1

There is no conclusive evidence that the invasion of USSR was stalled due to Greece. Hitler himself said the only real reason why he sent Germany into Greece was because UK got directly involved and didn't want the Allies to attempted a 2nd front no matter how small it was. Greece may of pushed Italy back from where they started but the Greek Army was badly outdated in supplies and equipment and only have a couple of months of defense even with a large reserve force. UK supplies to Greece only added about another month of resistance. Hitler told Mussolini that Greece was 100% inside Italian sphere of influence and wanted nothing to do with it and knew because the lack of supplies that Italy would of eventually overran the nation at some point. Again only because UK got directly involved that Germany bothered.

My grandfather fought in that war and the stories he left behind are epic.
He was looting the chocolate bars from the coats of the dead italians to warm himself and eat something cause there was no food. He once carried on his back a half-dead compatriot *3 fucking kilometers in the snow-covered mountains* back to the HQ to save him.
He died at 67 from a stroke and it turned out the death was caused from a gunshot wound at the leg from back then which was not stiched properly. The damaged artery at the leg clogged up the blood flow which caused the stroke so many years later.
He fought for his country and saved a man's life. Even tho I didn't get to know him because I was born 2 years after his death, I am so proud of him.
