Yes, my luthier friends, I worked at Waverly for 21 months before Stew/ Mac shut us down to move our shop to Athens, Ohio. We made the very best tuner machines the world has to offer. These gold F-5 tuners were selling for north of 500 bucks. All the rich, pro artists had them on their mandos, -- you know who I mean. They are that good. I put Grover tuners on my mandos and I sware, I can't tell the difference. They are easy, do not jam up and do the job at 1/10th the price. Our manager, at the time, said it was a status simble to have Waverly tuners. We did like the paychecks and the clean work environment. I somewhat miss making tuners. Wouldn't want to live in Ohio.

Adventures in clamping featuring the rubber band clamp and the reamer vice. (or vice versa?;) Steady progress. Coming along nicely, IMO.

That back of your mandolin is the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen. I know carving was extremely difficult, but the color and the way the grain just pops out made it all worth the effort. I know this mando will be totally spectacular. Good on you, Jerry, and good job. SPECTACULAR!!

Mr. Jerry I went through my mother's sewing box and found 1930's and 1940's buttons made of real mother of pearl and Abalone shell could they be used on a guitar build. All you would have to do is some how fill the 4 holes up. Would sanding fill the holes and glue work ? !!!!! GOD Bless !!!!! James and Judy Hopper Romans 6:23, Joshua 15:24………

New instrument might lack something that is impinged into the wood of the Gibson? I don't know.. Your finished expose of the beautiful mandolin came through well this eve. Kudos.

Nerves of steel and patients of a saint, but I know it's not your first barbeque. Your technic works well, I have never done real wood binding before, but you are a great teacher. Unless I do a fancy wood like your curly maple though, I'll stick with the plastic junk. I doubt very seriously that I will ever build a Mandolin, but I do hope to build an acoustic guitar from scratch before I kick the bucket. I will start with a quality kit from Martin or StewMac first. Thanks Jerry and the Mandolin looks great!

It’s the variations in the Spruce Wood My friend. I went to finish a top years ago. The top wouldn’t accept toner in few spots? Pitch residue or ? I stripped it several times and same issue. Beautiful work in progress. Unless a person has spent tedious hours crafting a instrument like this they don’t realize the peaks and valleys and exasperation that often occurs. Keep on truckin Brother.- it’s gonna sound and play like a Lamborghini!

You have different wood my man. One will take longer to dry than another. When I do gunstocks, I might let them dry a month before sanding. Now they do not get sanded after every coat. Steel wool maybe but only sanded after the final rubbed on coat, then dry for a month, then sand. Anyway, if I have a walnut stock or a beech stock, they take different amounts of time to dry. I thought from a man with your years of experience, you would know this by now.

Jerry, to keep wood glue from sticking wood pieces together, use waxed paper.
To keep CA glue from sticking, use parchment.
CA glue will penetrate waxed paper but Not parchment.
    I tested it, it works.

I was a spray painter for 40 years. The only things I can think of that might cause the difference between the two instruments would be The amount of paint applied. A little extra shellac on one could possibly be the difference. One other reason might be is if between the two instruments there might have been a little time that allowed the solids in the shellac to settle in the spray cup which would cause a slightly different (heavy) consistency to the shellac. I know that is reaching a bit...you would think they would be the same, yet they aren't.

When spraying metallic paints I had to make sure the paint remained stirred up. Otherwise I would begin to get more of the "metallic" particles after a while.

Heavier coat on the Gibson, thus a longer drying time?

I came across that exact same problem awhile back and found that the shellac that was underneath did not cure properly when the other person sprayed it and ever time you sand the surface it comes of like bubble gum. They didn't give enough time to cure between coats.

    Hi Jerry;
I've heard you say, "Everything is a hammer." Well sometimes everything is a wedge too. In your work it seems like you have to be a master at improvising. That is going to be one amazing mandolin. Keep on truckin my firend.

Hey Jerry, love your work.. Was wondering if the mandolin strap on one of your mandolins was one you made or maybe one I made and gave you. I visited your shop back in 2005 with Rich Biring. My straps were Kangaroo leather. And I alternated my leather color on most of them. I also sold them online. Just wondering, thx Terry Birmingham

Just finished the series and it was amazing.
Just a couple of thoughts from me. First, it seemed that nothing on this build was going to work… until it all did. Well done. Second, I can’t imagine how hard that must have been with arthritis in your hands. You could argue that someone younger would have had a much easier time with a lot of that work. But the flip side is that it takes 30 years experience and a few dozen instruments to develop the experience and ability to build something of that quality… so a 40 year old might have the hands, but won’t have the know how.

I'm betting something on the wood that's causing the fisheye issue is affecting the drying somehow.
