Jerry I have only built 5 guitars but the last 2 I put abalone purfling on them I used that Zipflex stuff it was kinda easy once I got the channels routed that’s the hard part. You should check out the zipflex instead of useing those tiny pieces. Looking Great though. God Bless🙏🙏🇺🇸🎸🎼🎹👨🏻🦯

??? Could you connect the binding with small nails or tacks and super glue? Just wondering?
Hello Jerry... I feel you when comes about cutting that purfling.
One nice advantage I find is to have two cutters, one set to cut in the other direction, yes is not easy to set both of them same, but it give you a good advantage when comes about cutting in the best direction that wood like it to be cut.
??? Why do you put binding on mandolins and guitars? Is it necessary?
One of the other guy's who does this same kind of work, using all of the hightek electrical gizmo's to trim off his tops (dremals and such) used different grades of superglue (some thinner than others) and complained vehemently about the mess it made if he didn't do it right, but it held the first time it did it regardless if it was right or not. He was a young buck and pretty confident in his work. His work looked good but his attention to the details just wasn't as tight as yours seems to be.

I cannot believe that you don't have the proper vises that would allow you to have both hands free to manipulate the hand & power tools that you use !!!
It’s the best mandolin I’ve seen built….it’s also the only mandolin I’ve seen built.

McMaster Carr sells push pins with aluminum tops and long tapered points. They may work a little better.
…!!!and why in the name of goodness are you not putting that mando-zygote in a hold/vise when doing that edging cut. Also, you always want to do an initial marking cut(at least) in the direction that favors the blade being pulled favorably (you don’t always have to go one direction). And sharpen that blade constantly… just saying. Keep at it

You are right, building a instrument is a piece of cake.But decorating it with inlays and binding can be and is a nightmare. If you make the smallest mistake it is next to impossible to undo the mistake.Ive only built about 20 guitars and I will do something wrong every time, just one little slip with the router or knife can be devastating. The guitar I am currently building, I did a boo boo I didn't rout deep enough for the plastic binding, and after scraping it flush it was paper thin. needless to stay it ali had to come off and be routed again. not fun
Hey Mr Jerry I have a Question for you. If you drew the line with your mechanical pencil where you need your perfilling to be could you use a surgical blade to cut it out better? In a scalpel or a hobie knife?

are you going to put shell around the sound holes? your initials somewhere in shell on the neck along with shell on the fretboard ??

My yairi acoustic guitar has that kind of inlay and I've always wondered how it was done.
This series is inspiring me to get back on my mandolin build. I'm not sure how I will tune the treble and bass bars since I can not play any instrument. Got to go back and watch the previous videos.
I wonder Gerry, if a round guide (dowel)? would be a better guide for the binding gage in regards to getting around the curves of an instrument.
I used the 1/4 inch on a small router but I admit I was puckered so much the seat stayed attached as I stood up 🤣🤣
Also, masking tape around your work so as not to marre the wood as you work.

Are you going to put a truss rod in the neck? I'm not that familiar with that subject. Great videos!
He does not feel that a trussrod is needed for the length of the neck on a mandolin. Also takes away from the strength.
Knowing when to stop shows your experience as a craftsman and artist. Had to stop watching when the Exacto came out. (Just had hernia surgery this week. Seeing the knife made my stitched up wound protest) I'll see this vid later next week.

It seems to me that sometimes it would take more time to make the tool than to do it the hard way.
That is often the case in everyone's workshop.
But taking the time to make a tool or jig can make your work
cleaner an more precise. Then, after that, you have that tool or
jig available, for the next time you need it.
A lot of work , these overseas places must do it all with cnc or something like that .
No, they do it with what is, basically, slave labor.

A CNC router with a tiny endmill seems like the ticket for perfling and binding channels. That’s how the big companies do it these days.
That’s not exactly the spirit of this mandolin though. Cutting the channels before the top/back is glued on is way easier, but that leads to other complications. Those complications are more difficult to deal with than just using the violin perfling cutter and the Dremel binding router.
Ideal tool is 3mm dia carbide spiral 2 flute down cut endmill. I've used the ones from Wealdon Tools here in the UK - they aren't cheap but they cut perfectly, no tear-out and a really crisp top edge. Part number T1D3000. Got to be similar available in the USA ..
@@trakla?? Use bit in a Dremel in place of the parallel cutter that tears chunks out...

Hi Jerry, and hello to the behind the scenes RSW folks. As a 67yo kid myself, I can appreciate just how hard you're working. Keep up the fine work, I'm learning a lot from your quest. One question: have you ever tried a peg vice, with or without a turntable? For my guitar building, I'm planning a moxon vice with a peg vice shelf on the back jaw, would love to hear your thoughts. Keep on sawing!

Good Lord, patients of a saint. You did kind of lose me in the beginning when you used that tool to score and said some people would just use a router, then your next step was a router. I guess you wanted that line to go by. Anyway, I said a while back that this must be about a 4000 dollar Mandolin, correction, must be about 6000 or better if you charged for all the time and effort in it. Looks great Jerry. and I will agree that it is the best Mandolin ever built by a human.
His last mandolin was put for auction and the max price was $10,000. It sold the first day for the max.
@@danomite22 Wow, I don't doubt it. Well worth it for the time he puts in it. Too rich for my blood. I also see where it would get more money in an auction knowing how rare a "Rosa" Mandolin is.
@@jthonn you listen to a the mandolins he has made and the sound is just unmatched. They also look beautiful as well. The volume that they create is amazing!

Oh my goodness, that's some very tedious work, Jerry, but the reward will be the "Finest Mandolin Ever Made by a Human". Man oh man, this thing is going to look sharp! I've admired all of the instruments that you've made (that I've seen on the videos), but this one takes the cake. I really wish that you could make a mandolin for me, but I completely understand why you can't. I feel badly for you, Jerry. I know what it's like to have your body betray you, mine has been breaking down for several years now. I have long titanium rods in my back from a military wound forty years ago, and two shoulder replacements, so I can relate to your body giving you a hard time. You hang in there buddy, slowing down is good for the both of us.

I think most people have no idea the level of precision that you take for granted!! I'm betting true Machinists.. and maybe up to the skill level of Jewelers.. watch this kind of artistic skill with jaws dropped wide open!! What you do is truly nothing short of some of the finest skills a human can achieve!! Not to say you're the best in the world... But it would be hard to argue about who could ever have made a more beautiful piece of art out of a mandolin!! If you put it against a computer analyst will it sound the best in the world??? Probably not!!! If you show it to the highest respected analyst of instrument construction will it stand up??? I'm guessing yes..!! Is it the finest handmade mandolin ever made by a human...???..........
