Riveting discussion. A course of this magnitude on a man of Spengler's ilk is a huge undertaking. Good luck and enjoy the journey.
Spengler is, without doubt, the most impactful author I have read in my life up to this point and I have had the life-changing experience and enriching pleasure of reading all of his English translated work. If anything I am admittedly envious that I don't speak fluent German purely to indulge in the original texts of Spengler, Nietzsche, Tönnies, Goethe, Jünger and the many other great writers and proponents of German Idealism. But I have done my best thus far and will continue to do so.
Thanks again for this great and valuable work.

This is great. I have been reading through the Decline of the West. Some parts are difficult to understand. I plan to take the course.

Spengler’s popularity on the american Right has been growing for the last decade. I’ve introduced quite a few people to him with Man and Technics. I’m also seeing a lot more audiobooks of Decline of the West, which didn’t exist just a few years ago.

Spengler's influence on two great, German-speaking scholar-philosophers...jumps out at me as I listen to the first ten minutes...Leo Strauss and Eric Voegelin. Strauss, preoccupied with "the city"; and Voegelin with "the ecumenic age."

No doubt, indeed, Spengler is a genius, a neglected genius who well deserves the serious treatment that is being proferred here. I can say this confidently without having a single translation of him in my rather large library.

I feel that Spengler is ignored because of the prevailing philosophical ideas since WW2, mainly the American liberal idea of constant progress being the norm. Spengler is just relegated as one of those "angry Germans of the 19-20th century whose ideas were wrong". Which is sad because his ideas couldn't be more profound and correct. I'd add Julius Evola to the list as a similar thinker. And then of course thinkers like Nietzsche and others, which obviously inspired Spengler, Evola, etc.

The question of determinism has become far too over simplified in contemporary philosophy.

Coming from an Islamic perspective I found Spenglers view of Kismet and the magical souls concept of fate somehow very oversimplified, it’s not some kind of hard determinism were the human being is akin to a floating piece of wood in the middle of the ocean, but rather a sort of soft occasionalism at least for the Asharites, a major theological school of Sunni Islam. Obviously Spengler isn’t trained in Kalam i.e Islamic “theology” and the interplay between human and divine will is a highly complex subject that’s been discussed for centuries up until now.

@@clumsydad7158 to be honest me too, at best I can claim superficial knowledge in the field of Islamic theology, simply bc of the fact that if you can’t read and truly understand Arabic at a high level you won’t have access to the works of the great Mutakallimun (Muslim Theologians) as most of their works sadly aren’t translated into English. I guess one reason why there isn’t a big push to translate those works is that if you haven’t learned Arabic and the other basics you shouldn’t even meddle in the high level theological stuff. I mean I see the wisdom behind this but it’s somehow also frustrating , nonetheless if you are interested in the topic I heartily recommend you to read:
” A Introduction to Islamic Theology, Imam Nur-ad Din al-Sabunis Al-Bidayah fi usul ad din. Translation and Annotation by Faraz A. Khan”
It was translated by one of the staff members of Zaytuna College in Berkley (CA) and gives a nice and easy to understand overview of the theological doctrines of the Maturidis, the other major theological school in sunni Islam, who don’t really differ that much from the Asharites.

Ah, but what are the externalities of getting rid of slavery? Everything is a trade-off, and if you aren't aware of the poison your vision brings with its tonic, then you are being deceived. Not against Marx, by the way. Just against stupid moralism.
