Our culture in America became significantly more dark after the genesis of extreme metal in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Master of puppets I’d say is when that darkness became mainstream and palatable to young audiences and it continued down that road from there to the mainstream pop of today discussing topics like depression, addiction, and suicide. If there’s any album out there from metal that I’d say is aesthetically, culturally, and historically significant I’d have to say that it’s Metallica’s master of puppets. \m/ rock on boys.

It's super surprising that a Black Sabbath album or even an Iron Maiden album wasn't the first metal album to be selected by the library of congress. Hell, it's surprising that the Black album wasn't selected. They actually got it right with Puppets. That album is a true work of art and is indeed culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.

"It is not your job to die for your country but to make some other bastard die for his." General Patton. Way to go with the motivation! So in high school creative writing class, there was a kid who kept getting A after A on his poetry assignments. The poems were posted on the wall of the classroom for the class to comment on anonymously. But I knew. The first poem he got an A on consisted of the lyrics of And Justice for All. I commented “Rock On!” I thought itwas clever sneaky and cool. Second was “One.” I chuckled. Third was “Master of Puppets” O.k. I thought this was starting to get cheezy. Fourth was “Disposable Heroes” Fourth A for this kid. Now I was getting pissed. Kid wasn’t stopping and the Boomer teacher had no idea. Fifth was “Battery.” I couldn’t take anymore, so I commented that it was better when Hetfield sings it. The poems stopped. Three weeks later the kid was expelled. Bad me or justice?

Oh yes... Disposable Heros is one of my favorites songs from Metallica. When you hear the drums & guitar you know it's Metallica. James Hetfield has such an iconic voice. Great reaction. I ❤ it. Would really love to see you react to Any man in America by Bule October.

Drinking Rolling Rock... I was a freshman in high school and discovering Metallica. This tape rarely left my walkman for 14 months. This is one of my favorite tunes off it. The politics of war, in a way. My 3 favorites by Metallica at the moment are All Nightmare Long, Spit Out The Bone and One "Bass Remix" from TH-cam. Shout out to Jason Newsted's solo project Newsted... 1 song is Heroic Dose, the lead track is awesome! Peace! Cheers!!!

This album and this song were particularly influential on my mind and beliefs in the 80s when it came out. I listened to this album so much. Back in cassette days I bought it at least 4 times I think due to wearing it out. EDIT: I started saving money when CDs came out and I couldn't wear them out by playing them. I was front row at Red Rocks on the And Justice tour and my friends and I (all musicians) were shouting for them to play this song as it is not one they typically do and sustaining that galloping rhythm is tough so we wanted to see it live. They have done it live this is just not one they usually do.

Black Sabbath created the spark of the initial creation of "heavy metal" and then many years later this quartet named Metallica came along and perfected it. Hasn't been topped ever since, despite all the many different incarnations that have come along. Nobody took you on a ride so perfectly such as these original Metallica albums.
