The part that sends chills throughout every time I hear it is "... the clock that ticks get used to it somehow." Back in my army days we had something called battlefield life expectancy. What equated to how long you were expected to survive on a battlefield, or just in country. Times ranged from minutes, hours, days... Mine I was told was three seconds.... And now continuing the breakdown. Thanks for doing it, and for doing it justice.

‘Soldier boy, made of clay, now and empty shell.’ That makes me think that war has broken the soldier, and empty shell like a soldier with PTSD.

Everyone has their own interpretation of this part, but to me it's explaining... Soldier boy-a guy in the military (AF, Navy, Marines, Army, ect ) Made of clay-Basic training is designed to break you down to build you back up (mold you like you would clay) and teach you the "basics" of military life. Now an empty shell- I look at this as more towards Marines/Army infantry or door kickers in my opinion. Empty shell referring to the lack of feelings or empathy in order to take the life of another person. Like I said, this is just my opinion/view of the lyrics.

My father is one of these men. Soldier boys. He is a hard man. Watched his friends die in Vietnam. Was field promoted to SGT. MAJ. What hes told me, is that means he was the only one left. Once I understood this I could see the pain behind his eyes. The fear. The want to heal and absolutely no pathway back. When I turned 30 he told me one thing. When you give the order to kill your best friends you can never recover from that.

One of the more profound dongs ever written. I grew up during anti war protests. This woukd have been epic then. The tragedy of war in the US is that we have only participated in one real war. WW11. After that, our police actions are mostly about money. We are willing to kill our own for money. I was 27 when they hit the scene and an instant fan. Many of their songs hit dead on the problems they sing about. I love that you are doing this. It brings back the passion I originally felt when I heard thrse songs. This old gal is and will forever be a metal fan and a HUGE fan of Metallica.

I loved your comment about the clock that ticks! Although I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, I never thought about the comparison of getting used to the sound of guns, just like the average person gets used to a clock in their home. Guess I just glossed over that one. One line towards the beginning that I really like is “no one to play soldier now, no one to pretend” - this line to me is part of setting the scene that his is the real deal, you cannot “fake it till you make it” at this point. No room for hollow bravado or going through the motions anymore in the thick of combat. You must do what a soldier does: kill or be killed. Good analysis!

You are on point! But this has duel meaning. It's also the description of how we're raised and what is presented to us to make us want to fight a so called enemy. We are raised and taught to serve our rulers and to fight their wars. This all ties in from album too album. Metalica is big anti war. These guys are highly intelligent. They see all these wars throughout history are wars of the leaders, not the people. I'm a veteran and grew up on metallic. Their music made so much more sense to me after my service.

I have always thought the part about "Finished here, greeting death, he's yours to take away" would be like the military speaking to the family about their son/daughter having fallen on the battlefield and kinda like "we're done with him/her. Here you go. Now you can bury them."

Just in my personal musical opinion - Disposable Heroes is at the extreme limit or boundary for when heavy metal goes from talent to noise. In other words this insane tempo and technical layout is a fast and hard as I have ever heard that still has a clear melody and understandable composition.
Versus out of control falling over yourself to try and be "heavy" and it begins to sound like smashing metal garbage cans.
Metallica hit the wall on this song and it is legendary.

To put this in a historical context, when I here this it brings to mind WW1 battle especially Pashendale The callous, waste of human life on ww1 battles fits the song very well, This is also true of music written by IRON MAIDEN (Pachendale) (Trooper) and SABATON (the Price of a mile) although Sabaton has a whole album dedicated to the memory of ww1 as all songs on it are about that historical war (great war)

They are a great band whose debut album "Whatever People Say I am, that is what I am Not," is still the fastest selling debut album in history by a British band, topping bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, LZ, Oasis, etc. Song suggestions: Fake Tales of San Francisco," "A Certain Romance," "Do me a Favour," "Brianstorm," "D is for Dangerous," "505," "Pretty Visitors," "Secret Door," "Arabella," and at this point all of their music.

My take away is the dehumanizing to create soldiers to take orders, to come to terms with death in the fields, if lucky enough to return home, you will have PTSD with no one around to understand, while contemplating suicide.

There's a line "to secure peace is to prepare for war" that I take as a positive, while others balk at it.
