If you actually look into the mechanics of singing you'd see that crying does more to your voice than just a crack. Way more. I recommend watching a video titled something along the lines "Why Les Miserables singing was worse than you think" or something like that.

I love how he did this one. The first part is just like how it was one the show, how sad Stolas was. Then the reprise of the second half of the song is kind of like Stolas is angry, like after the fight with Stella.
