    I've ordered seeds, hopefully I'll get some germinated over summer, I'm not planning on ever cutting them down to get a straight trunk, though. I like wonky trunks. What I find interesting is how closely you have planted them together! I need to block neightbours, too. An update on your trees would be great since over ten years has now passed.

    Thank you! I got two 4 inch saplings in summer of 2013 and they grew about 18 inches. For various reasons we moved them that late fall. I chopped one down to the ground (the one that was smaller) and left the other, just to see. This summer the chopped one got to about 5 feet, straight up, and the unchopped one sent up a second trunk, both only getting to about 3 feet (if you measure the trunk and curve not straight up). They have been in that place a year now, having to reroot I suppose. The leaves are all off after our last frost. I was wondering if I should chop them again. Still not sure, but your video was a big help for my other questions!

    If you cut them down at 5-6' heights and if the root structure is strong like mine are they grew 35'-40' this season. They don't grow as fast (height) on old growth but they gain in girth. I personally like the big huge leaves on new growth so every spring I take the chainsaw and make 6'-20' perfectly straight poles. I have an empty plot I've been piling them up and it's getting big.
    However I'm not getting flowers but at least I'm not getting the messy seed pods some strains have. I do not know to much details on that subject.

    I planted two last summer and was happy to see they survived the winter. Right now they look like 4 ft tall bushes. I’ve been afraid to prune them. Should I get that lower growth off so they shoot up?

    Cool!!! Ordered the smallest package of seeds I could find - 200, lol. I will try to grow some in the desert near the border of USA & Mexico. In addition to searing heat we also have high winds, so I will see if they can survive and adapt. Would be great to share these trees with people to plant in spots with a bit of shelter from the wind, since the leaves are so lush and shade-giving. I will feel bad if they don't enjoy the heat here though ; _ ;

    Anyone looking for shade quick you can't do better than the Royal Empress tree....I have planted 5 and never had one ounce of trouble with them....my yard went from blistering hot with the cedar siding on my house fading and curling to nice and cool in just a very short period of time.
    The leaves are no problem when they shed....just mow over them and they desintegrate leaving no mess.
    Our power bill in the summer time has dropped enough to pay for the trees.
    I recommend them to anyone!

    Fascinating tree. I have bought seeds through Amazon and followed instructions on how to germinate them either in the soil or in water (rain water) but not a single seed has ever germinated. Where can I get good seeds? I think they sell dead seeds or are affected by the scanning at airports or something,

    I'm germinating some seeds right now. I live in arizona so it looks like the dry sand is covered. And thanks the the massive pollution that gives us beautiful sunsets I think my trees will grow really great. Plus no need to worry about winter since we skipped it this past year.

    I cut mine down to the ground before winter, instead of the main branch growing, 3 branches gre from the main stalk from the ground though. They are getting big, but it’s like 3 giant branches not one main at all, should I cut the two smallest ones away and leave the larger one? Thank you!

    Hi. Cool video. I will try the 10-10-10- fertilizer and get some sand. Mine came through mail order just a little twig. It did okay for about 2 month but then stop growing. I think I over watered it. His name is Louie. So in October I chopped him down to the ground. So how do I out the sand in now? So do I dig him up and mix sand in his root area? When is a good time to add the 10-10-10 fertilizer? Thanks for your time.

I am in zone six and was afraid to chop it to the ground because of the high desert area we're in, so it's a huge fat bush which is making my husband insane. is it too late to trim the lower leaves? I have 2 of these trees. This will be my 3rd year. The one tree is big and the other was cut down last year. The big one is about 10 feet tall and is just the trunk, branches and nothing else. I now see new sprouts coming up from the bottom of the trunk. Do i need to cut these back? Can I root these and plant these somewhere else? Is the original tree going to sprout again?

    • @smilejeep
      @smilejeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you need to cut back the sucker branches and yes you can root them.....you will need a rooting hormone which can be purchased at any garden supply store and some Miracle Grow dirt.....when you root the clippings be sure and set the pot in a shaded area for the first few weeks of growing otherwise the direct sun will be too much on the delicate sprout which will need to develope a root base to survive it.....water about once a week but don't over water and make sure the pot you are growing the sprout in has a drain hole otherwise you will root rot.

    • @smilejeep
      @smilejeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      alok Kumar ....they DO need to be watered on a regular basis the first few weeks of rooting......you can always plant them and hope that they survive the first year.

    • @smilejeep
      @smilejeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait until they go dormant and cut then to the ground....a new tree will emerge in the spring and it will grow straight as an arrow........water them only once a week for the few months of the growing season or else you will end up with root rot and have to replace the tree.

      smilejeep I planted 2 trees a few months ago. we recently had a frost and all the leaves turned black. I removed all the leaves and now have only 2 sticks. Should I cut them to ground level soon. I would assume they will take off again in the spring.
      Thanks
      Arnie

    • @smilejeep
      @smilejeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arnie Scatts Thanks for the question.......you can cut them to the ground if you wish as this will ensure that you start fresh this spring with a straight stalk.........when the Paulownia re-emerges this spring it will grow at a rapid pace so be sure to prune it properly so it appears a tree rather than a large bush. =)

When i planted them they were about 6 inches tall.They grey to about 6 feet tall,Then the leaves turned a yellow color then all the branches fell off and looked like a 6 foot twig about middle of the summer.I did not know what to do so i just let it be.Now the suckers (wich i did not know was suposed to be pulled off until watching your video) are turning into branches but with smaller leaves.What should i do?

    Hmmmm... we planted our seedling in March 2014 and have done nothing to care for it. Today August 27, 2014 the tree is in the 25' to 30' range with a 15' canopy. The base of the tree has begun the process of converting to a traditional style tree trunk to the 4' level with an 8" diameter. I suspect location makes all the difference. We are in zone 9 just on the edge of California desert. We get a great deal of both heat and sun. Very common to be 90 to 110 for many days in a row. We plan to do no pruning.

      alok Kumar We grew our tree from a seedling that was about 6 inches tall in late March 2014. We really did nothing special except to add some mulch to the soil. We have a very low flow irrigation system for the entire yard and the tree gets the same limited water that all the plants around it get. We live n a desert area that is currently in severe drought. Summer temperatures can go above 110 degrees and the tree is in full sun. The tree has had no fertilizer or any outer treatment, we simply ignored it and let it go. As of today, September 4th, 2014, the tree is easily above 30 feet in height. Good luck!

    I've been doing a bit of research on paulownia trees.... you mentioned that a single tree can sell for $8k. Is that price from personal experience? If not, would you mind letting me know where you learned of that price for these trees? I read on a sawmill forum where someone mentioned they can go $1k for a "log" (not sure how big) and that message was from around 3 or 4 years ago.

    Since I've planted these trees they've been known as the "crazy trees" and in the winter in looks like a haunted forest! Lol.
    I cut them them at 6' every year and I have 10' - 20' perfectly straight 3-6" round branches. I have a huge pile of branches after 4-5 years!!! I prefer to chop them down every year so I can have the extra large leaves. Plus I like to have a 15-20 foot privacy wall of crazy elephant leaves. There is not one person who doesn't comment on the trees when they them. To be honest if I ever wanted to get rid of them. I don't think I'll be able too. Lol There just crazy growers

    Im doing serious scientific research into paulownia trees. A 7 year old tree can produce etween 80 and 122 board feet. Each oard foot can sell between $1-$5 depending on quality.
    so an average of 100 oard feet and $2 per oard foot gives you $200 per tree.

    I am gathering from my research that are more than one species of this tree. One grows to about 80 ft, can do a lot of damage and can be diseased, and then the other one like what I read here grows to 40 ft. is nice and good. I want a nice 30-40 ft tree, but I dont want a monster that will rip out the side walk, foundations of homes and hit all the power lines. If you keep cutting to the group, you will not get flowers, and I am concerned. I am seeing video, but nothing goes beyond the first year.. Id like to see more information.

      They can put on 15 feet a year, and they are extremely hardy and easy to grow. Germination to full tree is 2 years. Not even bonsai cost that much, and to make good bonsai, the tree itself (from which you take shoots) need to grow for almost 10 years.
