  • Most foods come wrapped in plastic packaging. This type of packaging creates a lot of waste and aren't that great at preventing spoilage. Researchers are now developing a biodegradable film made from milk proteins to hopefully solve these problems.

There is also a need for bioplastics that are heat resistant for cooking food under vacuum in plastic bag in an oven or in water at low (~60*c) température.

They don't show the end product because milk protein-based "plastic packaging" is a natural base--i.e. it doesn't dissolve, it disperses into little chunks they don't want to show on video.

This isn't new.. The problem doesn't seem to be finding ways to make bioplastics. The problem seems to be getting them out there and in widespread use.

If the single serve is placed into a larger plastic casing to protect it from getting dirty, would that not defeat the purpose?

No. At least all the individual packaging is reduced. That's better than nothing. And eventually, we'll find a solution for the overall packaging too.

Hey American Chemical Society, try to spray a layer of natural wax on your biodegradable plastic film. I think it would make your biofilm, water-resistant and last longer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax

They should add WAX in the milk with the citrus pectin to make the bioplastic film, water-resistance ! Add wax in the ingredient.

It's a bit confusing, but I think they meant for single serve packaging you are going to eat and not for those you plan on disposing of.

    • @AndrewBlankNY
      @AndrewBlankNY 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's really not confusing but someone didn't think out the problem they're trying to solve.
      The problem is plastic waste.
You don't solve that problem by wrapping the wrapper that's designed to replace plastic in plastic.
Furthermore they try to show this as being convenient because it dissolves in water and you can toss in the whole thing rather than just opening it and pouring the contents.
Where they are failing is that in order to make it "convenient" they have to wrap it in plastic to keep it from getting dirty so now you have to open the plastic just so you can toss a water soluble protein bag in hot water.
If you have to open the plastic anyway to toss in the bag why not just get rid of the plastic and tell people to open the new bag and pour the contents.
The real problem is common sense is not common anymore.

  • @dreikelvin

This sounds horrible. Using animal proteins to create a plastic alternative would increase the CO2 imprint created by the cowmeat & dairy industry. We should instead focus more on plant or bacteria-based solutions. Also, what about people with a milk-protein intolerance/allergy? Here in the netherlands, they are already using bacteria-produced, recyclable plastic for some products in the supermarket. I hope this trend continues!

This isn't sustainable the amount of cows needed. This is ridiculous. Get a plant based source. As the environmental impact from needing so many more cows would be ridiculous. You haven't thought this through properly.

    • @monsieurVi

I thing this initiative is also possible thanks to many milk alternatives on market today. So there’s a little bit more space for cow milk to be used this way.
