Great content. I was in Da Nang in July (last month) and also went to the Da Nang Family Hospital for bronchitis. I wanted to make sure I didn’t have pneumonia. The service, care and efficiency were great. I’m a medical person and I respect your the care the offered me. So much of my experience as a SE Asian slow traveler dispels all that is communicated about foreign travel in the US. For example in the US it is communicated it’s so dangerous abroad. I felt the most peaceful in Vietnam and was very safe traveling all through Vietnam in contrast to the Bay Area. I carried pepper spray every where I went in the Bay Area. Thank you for your efforts. I have benefited very much. 🙏🏼

Thanks for pointing out what only people outside the USA come to learn. Propaganda about how things are the best in the USA than anywhere else in the world and nowhere else comes close. Its always people that have not traveled enough that believe it.

I'd have thought that the proliferation of information online would have had many Americans question the status quo regarding the complete gouging of financial resources caused by the unchecked corporatisation of insurance, pharmaceuticals and delivery of health care services in the USA, but it seems that they remain oblivious to the multitude of alternative paradigms in other countries where access to healthcare is affordable. There always seems to be a fear of higher taxation or lower quality care or 'socialized medicine' without weighing up the punitive cost, at an individual level, of privatized health care. Let alone the social cost of an otherwise productive tax-paying member of the public being sidelined with a treatable condition. The short-sightedness of the system is taken as the best of all possible worlds without exploring the workable alternatives. Corporate America must be extraordinarily persuasive: after all, they're the same outfit that has convinced workers that two weeks annual leave is an acceptable exchange for a year of dedicated service. Only Japan still subscribes to that and they have a large bank of public holidays to soften the impact. The rest of the western world has 4 to 6 weeks annual leave, plus public holidays.

I met a woman who broke her arm while riding her bicycle in San Francisco. She was taken to the local emergency room by ambulance where she was treated . Her arm was X-rayed and put in a cast. She had no insurance. She was struck with a $70K bill. WTF? 😳
Horror stories like this are commonplace in USA and they often lead to financial ruin.
Thanks Clifton and Dan for this informative and inspiring story. Great to know that there are still alternative options at affordable prices abroad. Please cover more on this topic. Thank you.

@@VagabondAwake I see you see how far this has gone. I enjoy the lightness of your channel and I know you deliberately avoid making a fuss about things over which you have no control, but it has become completely crazy back (in your) home. Last year I had to get standard heart meds (blood pressure, statins) while traveling Europe/Balkans. Zero drama at close to zero cost. Waltzed into pharmacies from Portugal to Albania, even Montenegro and the response was the same. No script, no problem. $10 for over the counter meds (same brands as back home) and in Portugal the pharmacy only had tablets that were double the dose. I simply asked for a pill cutter and ended up with two months supply. Where I ordinarily reside, Australia, the same meds are about the same cost. The only place in the world that tolerates the lunacy of extortionate pharmaceutical prices is the US. Daylight robbery.

Well, that’s one of the things that happens when you are relegated to Medicare, but healthcare in general just sucks ass anymore, assembly line healthcare is becoming the norm in the United States. If I have a serious medical problem like cancer, I think I’m gonna be flying into Vietnam, it would still be cheaper than paying the 20% leftover from Medicare that we have to pay out of pocket.

Most expats don't give enough consideration to health issues and don't study the small print enough with these cheaper health insurance policies, only to find out later that they are under insured, and through listening to the experinces of others I discovered that companies try there best wiggle their way out of paying for anything costly. Because it is way cheaper to live here in Thailand I only need to draw 75% of my pension. The rest goes into what I call my medical account (4 k a year). It not only covers me for small procedures/treatments here in Thailand. It will enable me to fly back to the UK and rent a place for a while should I need non urgent surgery or costly long term treatment.

Treating a relatives stage 4 cancer cost $600k just for her medication. I couldn't decipher what the rest of the doctor/surgery/hospital services cost, but I think everything in total was pushing $1M.
I have a subscription medical service for primary care, and the cost of most medication is less than the copays with my insurance. Medical care in the US could be much cheaper, but there is not just one reason. The whole system is biased against the patient.

600 Baht is about $18 USD for those who need a reference point. The reason he goes a step more and gets and MRI is that his PSA test is above the normal range. So the MRI gives him a "size" comparison from the last MRI so he knows more information. So most people only pay the $18 USD and don't have to pay the $250 for an MRI.

By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Great question @markbardner8214, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance, and a third report sharing which one I decided to finally buy.
What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
Here is the Health Insurance I bought (and scams to avoid): th-cam.com/video/0leF_BCLVKw/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

I don't know if this is the intended effect, but the more I watch Vagabond the less I like the United States. I've always disliked our health care system. But our fake food is terrible. Rat race lifestyle is no fun, and you never seem to get ahead.
SE Asia and South America is in my future. I already lived in Peru for two years. Can't wait to retire early and slow travel.

I am happy to be from the USA, but I like living overseas because lifestyle is emphasized instead of money. Not many people are on their deathbed and thinking, "I should have worked more." It is much less stressful when their is money left over at the end of the month and you don't even notice anymore who has the nicest car on the street or the biggest house. But I am glad I was born in the USA. Lots of advantages there.

So $250 for an MRI is cheaper than free in the US? Tuber math.

Who gets free MRI's in the USA?

    • @cliftonspires1195
      @cliftonspires1195 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's true! I recently had an MRI here as a preventative health measure. My high PSA. The results were the same. I reviewed the MRI from Thailand with my urologist, and they were word for word the same.

I would get bored sitting in the usa waiting for a time I will need a free MRI, even if it was free. Plus, if I add my monthly expenses of living in the USA to the cost of my free MRI, it is still twice what it costs me to live here and pay $250 for an MRI here every single month. More tuber math I guess.
