I'd have thought that the proliferation of information online would have had many Americans question the status quo regarding the complete gouging of financial resources caused by the unchecked corporatisation of insurance, pharmaceuticals and delivery of health care services in the USA, but it seems that they remain oblivious to the multitude of alternative paradigms in other countries where access to healthcare is affordable. There always seems to be a fear of higher taxation or lower quality care or 'socialized medicine' without weighing up the punitive cost, at an individual level, of privatized health care. Let alone the social cost of an otherwise productive tax-paying member of the public being sidelined with a treatable condition. The short-sightedness of the system is taken as the best of all possible worlds without exploring the workable alternatives. Corporate America must be extraordinarily persuasive: after all, they're the same outfit that has convinced workers that two weeks annual leave is an acceptable exchange for a year of dedicated service. Waltzed into pharmacies from Portugal to Albania, even Montenegro and the response was the same. No script, no problem. $10 for over the counter meds (same brands as back home) and in Portugal the pharmacy only had tablets that were double the dose. Most expats don't give enough consideration to health issues and don't study the small print enough with these cheaper health insurance policies, only to find out later that they are under insured, and through listening to the experinces of others I discovered that companies try there best wiggle their way out of paying for anything costly. Because it is way cheaper to live here in Thailand I only need to draw 75% of my pension. The rest goes into what I call my medical account (4 k a year). It not only covers me for small procedures/treatments here in Thailand. It will enable me to fly back to the UK and rent a place for a while should I need non urgent surgery or costly long term treatment.
Treating a relatives stage 4 cancer cost $600k just for her medication. I couldn't decipher what the rest of the doctor/surgery/hospital services cost, but I think everything in total was pushing $1M. 600 Baht is about $18 USD for those who need a reference point. The reason he goes a step more and gets and MRI is that his PSA test is above the normal range. So the MRI gives him a "size" comparison from the last MRI so he knows more information. So most people only pay the $18 USD and don't have to pay the $250 for an MRI.

I don't know if this is the intended effect, but the more I watch Vagabond the less I like the United States. I've always disliked our health care system. But our fake food is terrible. Rat race lifestyle is no fun, and you never seem to get ahead. SE Asia and South America is in my future. I already lived in Peru for two years. Can't wait to retire early and slow travel.
I am happy to be from the USA, but I like living overseas because lifestyle is emphasized instead of money. Not many people are on their deathbed and thinking, "I should have worked more." It is much less stressful when their is money left over at the end of the month and you don't even notice anymore who has the nicest car on the street or the biggest house. But I am glad I was born in the USA. Lots of advantages there.
Hi Dan, long time subscriber; very informative interview video!! I have been Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines many times, but until hearing such a great report, never considered Vietnam. I am a solo traveller, Could one spend a week in Da Nang or would you get a little bored there, and can you or Clifton suggest a 2nd area to travel to for first time Vietnam visitor. I will try to find a Vietnam video in your channel. Tks for great post!
That's true! I recently had an MRI here as a preventative health measure. My high PSA. The results were the same. I reviewed the MRI from Thailand with my urologist, and they were word for word the same.
I would get bored sitting in the usa waiting for a time I will need a free MRI, even if it was free. Plus, if I add my monthly expenses of living in the USA to the cost of my free MRI, it is still twice what it costs me to live here and pay $250 for an MRI here every single month. More tuber math I guess.

Tried to buy the book on Amazon here in Australia but it says:- This title is not currently available for purchase :(
I will try to make it available there.
@@cliftonspires1195 Thanks Clifton.
I wonder what it cost for the follow up in the USA.
That was covered for him I think.
@@VagabondAwake Oh ok must have had US insurance. Thanks.
Medicare
Thank you for your interest. My follow-up care consists of an MRI one month after the last radiation treatment. 06/04/2024. It was clear. A CT scan for my internal organs. -all clear. One more scan in 10 days, and that's it.
@@cliftonspires1195 That's great to hear. I am hoping the medical in Thailand is similar. Take care and stay healthy.
How many oncologists take new patients on a Saturday in the US?
(The number is lower than 1)
Wow . What a Day he had !! Rollercoaster !! Cutting it close on finances though . Not a penny in savings and just a SS check coming in ? Completely dependent on a Go Fund Me or Die basically . Scary
We sometimes count ourselves out in life when there is often a creative way to get something done if we don't give up too soon.
@@VagabondAwake You're now on my Go Fund Me email list ! Just kidding . I'd feel like i would need to teach English until I paid it all back .
Japan #2 in the world Phillipines #96.
Does that mean need fro travel insurance...as an option...can just pay for healthcare as needed?
Great question @markbardner8214, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance, and a third report sharing which one I decided to finally buy.
What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
Here is the Health Insurance I bought (and scams to avoid): th-cam.com/video/0leF_BCLVKw/w-d-xo.html
By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan
What is/was his gofundme site? I would like to see how he worded it . I am in a similar situation
I haven't seen it, sorry.
Age & Interests would help…..Cheers
Nha Trang, Da Lat, Da Nang
I found you & Qiang's video comparing Nha Trang & DaNang. Tks. 😊
Does this guy have a TH-cam channel?
Not yet. Just the eBook for now.
@@VagabondAwake thanks 👍👍
Thank you for your interest. I am considering one.
@@cliftonspires1195 I think your life situations and your travel would be well worth watching Sir 😁
Great example of an under funded retired expat. Don’t be this guy.
He can't go back in time and make past decisions. He has to hit his ball from where it landed.
So $250 for an MRI is cheaper than free in the US? Tuber math.
Who gets free MRI's in the USA?
That's true! I recently had an MRI here as a preventative health measure. My high PSA. The results were the same. I reviewed the MRI from Thailand with my urologist, and they were word for word the same.
I would get bored sitting in the usa waiting for a time I will need a free MRI, even if it was free. Plus, if I add my monthly expenses of living in the USA to the cost of my free MRI, it is still twice what it costs me to live here and pay $250 for an MRI here every single month. More tuber math I guess.
