This is a superb video essay. I have been sold on foreign language film for the past 20-30 years, and regularly find my yearly Top 10 Lists half filled with gems from Korea, Japan, China, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark etc. Asian films are especially excellent. I can't tell you how many times I have had a conversation with someone fed up with the quality of movies "these days". My answer is always the same... If you want to see twice as many great films -- watch more foreign films. I would argue you might have as much as three times as many great films. Great work. Subscribed!

Happy to see someone talk about the importance of how being able to read subtitles opens up so much media. It sucks to some extent that it took Parasite to really open it up to the mainstream. I feel before it you had to already enjoy anime and or have been shown subtitled films from friends who speak more then one language to find some them. I know i was lucky to check out subtitled anime really early on, early Jackie Chan/Jet Li films combined with a family member needed subtitles because of their hearing that made watching something with subtitles just normal for me. Also color me surprised that the "The Great Passage" also got a live action series (noticed it at the end), for a series about dictionaries it was a wonderful drama.

As someone who is a huge fan of Foreign Cinema, I want to say that this is a beautiful done video essay on Foreign films. Ever since I watched movies from different countries in Asia such as Battle Royale and A Tale of Two Sisters; it's really great that Foreign cinema is taken more seriously thanks to the success of "Parasite". It shows that not only filmmakers from different cultural backgrounds are given opportunities to tell their stories but also film fans can have a chance to expand their tastes in film.
Also thanks for mentioning "The Handmaiden" and "Swing Girls". Those were such great movies in general.

Exellent put, as usual. I am long time subriber, first time commenting. I am based in Scandinavia and have worked hard to showcase the Asian Aesthetics through coordinating music stage performances, cultural festivals, video games to cinema since the 90s.
I don't have much time to spare for self indulgent activites due to my profession. But I alwawys find your video essays enjoyable and relaxing to watch, even more so when you started to expand the scope to include live action films from asia. Thank you for your work!

Truly, I hope more audience choose risk a little moving out their comfort zone because there really is a wealth of media outside of just the West. As a Thai moviegoers, I recommend if you want to watch more Thai movie that can or in the same league as Bad Genius I will recommend 3 that I think you can easily find:
    1. The Tin mine, it is a flop at first but slowly it become regarded as one of the best.
    2. Where we belong, For me this films speak for my generation of Thai with a message hidden inside and last shot that sink into my memory to this day.
    3. Happy old years, directed by a well known indie director. This is more direct speaking than the last but it an experience of emotion to watch it nonetheless.

This video is a stroke of genius as a love letter to any kind of love & appreciation to foreign media works imo. I really believe the majority of the world pretty much already breaking that subtitles barriers, but it's indeed something else when it comes to Hollywood as a leading industry in popular films & shows.
As someone who basically watch movies/shows/animations with subs throughout my whole life, I am so glad that it seems even common American audiences are now more open to the idea of foreign media a lot more even than Hollywood. Let's not deny ourselves that they are pretty late about it LOL

In America, they only make non-foreign-language films. Foreign-language films are very hard to make, obviously, because you have to invent a foreign language, instead of using the usual language. But the truth is, cinema is a foreign language, a language created for those who need to travel to the other side of life. Good night." quote by Leos Carax, director of the film Holy Motors. I think this quote fits perfectly with the theme of this video. There are so many worlds to be explored in cinema and limiting yourself to only one of these worlds would be a shame.

Wanted to work off the list of movies in this essay. I already knew The Handmaiden and I started with Linda Linda Linda today. It's a fantastic movie. Thank you so much for the recommendation.

Joe, When I saw the word Korea on my screen, I thought for sure that you would mention the masterpiece "Little Forest" now available on Amazon Prime video. - Bob

Great video! Good to see u mentioned some underrated titles not just the popular ones.
U should watch Koki Mitani's _Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald_ , if u haven't already. It's probably a direct inspiration to _One Cut of the Dead_ .
If u like One Cut, u will definitely love the former.

Already loved One Cut of the Dead, so I gave Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald a try, Just finished it. Didn't have this much fun with a movie in ages. That dam and firework scenes. And the trucker... fantastic. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

Dude I hit the like button so I can reference this in the future and watch some of these movies...not because I want you to "stay in your lane" as you put in right at the very very end. I welcome more content like this. 🙂

On a similar level, I find that foreign music can also be a delight to discover, regardless if you understand the language lyrics. The thought that there are probably millions of great songs to enjoy, but we only get a small percentage of curated music to us. Of course, there is independent music labels to the major labels, but there is also great foreign music and their respective labels (both from the past & present).

I was frantically pausing to update my imdb list and completely ruined your video's intended experience just to get a full list at the end... no hard feelings. In all seriousness, I appreciate your thoughts and thank you for this jumping off point for foreign films!

I'd forgotten about Bad Genius - fine wee film. I don't recall you covering Sion Sono, so if you are yet to indulge in his work, I'd recommend Love Exposure as the way in. Intimidating run time be damned!

Yes my guy. Just watched bad genius after seeing this video. Have been really into a lot of cinema from Asia but have never really came across anything from Thailand yet. What a start this film is though for my first experience of Thai cinema. To me it felt like a weird mix between something like catch me if you can and uncut gems. Awesome film.

This video brought me to your channel because of the “best of Asian cinema” title. I really like this video. At the end of it, I felt like that’s it? Where’s more? I look forward to more videos like this. If you can talk about films made by lesser known countries like Taiwan or Vietnam, it’d be even better!
