Peter thank you so much for your videos. My 97 is still on the road thanks to your series of videos with 295K miles. I've replaced the timing belt, power steering hoses, cleaned the plenum or air tank and replaced both the transmission and trans-axle fluid thanks to you! God bless you.
What most likely would have taken me a week to do with much trial and error I was able to do in 15 hours. I took my time and stayed composed. I want to thank you so much for your detailed explanation and great closeups in your video. The job was rather difficult but your video made it easier. Your attention to detail makes your instruction above the rest. THANK YOU!!
last year my timing belt broke and i didnt have 1000+ to fix it. Niether did i know ANYTHING about cars. this video was a life saver and now i fix bmw v8's for fun. Thank you peter for your instruction and inspiration
Thanks so so much for taking the time to put this video together. Especially for all the effort in framing the shots properly without wobbly/blurry/unclear sections, not to mention the incredibly straightforward layman-style explanations of the process. I've a little mechanical DIY experience, and I'll be doing my first cambelt myself because of your excellent video. :)
@@kn520 Hi there. Was a long long time back but happily got into the hobby and have done a few now! Depends greatly on the car but lining up the timing marks obviously essential. If you have a water pump on whatever car you're doing, I use old school hylomar on the gaskets and a teeny coating of red rubber grease on the o-ring types, but not convinced the red rubber grease is super amazing. Some say just use coolant to lubricate those. Progressively tighten bolts in a star pattern also. Also get a manual and watch as many TH-cam videos as you can for your car. If it's a single cam engine it'll be daunting but easy and logical when you're in there. Good luck!
Peter Finn, thank you again for this tutorial. My Belt snapped at 20,000 and I am again in the process of replacing it. I used an "evergreen" belt and not an OEM. I also drove the car hard. Thank you!
I just finished the job. Thank you! What I did different: made a shorter harmonic balancer tool to remove the bolt and re install it; used a harmonic balancer puller; did not take off the plugs which allowed the timing to stay put; did not remove the motor mount, but the 3 screws on the motor mount towards the belt side (2 under and 1 on top) and pried it apart with a jack handle to slip the new belt in; raised the engine about an inch to closed the motor mount area that was pried open; cleaned the area prior to installing belt which was oily( belt was cracked all over); used the jack handle to push the new belt bearing to the side and which allowed the belt to easily go on; only removed the alternator and air conditioning belts; cleaned the valve cover gasket and added sealant or gasket maker to keep oil in and away from the belt; aligned the markings per your and other videos; rotated the engine as you did and which is an area that the lobes are not located. A very long and tiring job! Thank you again.
Thank you so much for doing this video! I followed it to the T and the timing belt job I did on my 1995 Toyota Corolla 1.8L DX went smoother then I could have ever imagined it to go.
I have a 97 Toyota Carina, and I shall replace timing belt on that car. Thank you for this very detailed video on how to do it, Peter. This will save me alot of money from letting a garage do it. Have a nice summer, greetings from Drammen in Norway. Hilsen Asle
Thanks, it was a big help, I had to replace him before I could drive to Spain with New Year holiday ... ..... your video is very good, everything get well explained .... I love my toyota he is now 22 years old and without any problems we enjoyed our holiday. You are proof that there really good people in the world who really help other people ... many thanks and a happy new year , greetings from FRANCE
I changed timing belt and water pump on my 96 corolla after watching your video. without your video, i would have been lost.Thank you for posting Peter.
Another fabulous Toyota Corolla video. Aside from learning to do it myself, I came here just to check if it was a belt or chain. I was told by a shop that my 2000 Corolla CE used a chain and didn't need replacing. Time to order more parts.
Thank you for your troubles Sir, you have been of great help. I don't think anyone would enjoy doing this job while having to maneuvre a camera, but you were patient and went as far as to explain and give tips...Danke!
Thanks you very much! Because of this video I was able to change my timing belt and water pump myself. There really needs to me more videos like this on youtube!
Kazooie make sure no oil leaking into spark plugs holes.my seal silpped down 2 filled w oil . I was able to put back .was losing oil. done this job twice not for faint of heart .had a pinto changed twice on road .good idea if old belt not broken to keep it taped off on side can be used in emergency wo. jacking .& test for bent valves.
had to lock the belt tensioner bearing to keep the belt from jumping and while rotating cam. used a cylinder compression gauge to determine TDC exhaust and not intake cycle. do the markings! determining belt deflection- used a ruler. the tip on determining TDC was priceless-screwdriver(or object) in cyl 1,timing mark -0 and crank shaft marking, camshaft marking and crankshaft woodruff key pointing up. do the markings! there's a pdf manual on this model for free and on google. leaving vehicle jacked on one side for extended time may damaged cv joint on opposite wheel. Thank you Mr. Finn for your time in making this video.
Thanks alot for this fantastic Video i Changed both timing belt and waterpump. With your tutorials. And got it right first try. Only thing i feel should be mentioned in the Video. Is that the timing belt markings dont line up again after 2 rotations when adjusting the pulley. I panicked here a bit and rotated until they lined up again to be shure.
I want to reach out and give you a BIG THANK YOU @peter Finn. Ive had problems when i tried to replace my timing belt. When we tried to undo the bolt below we broke the cam shaft on the top. We did it the wrong way. And after that ive used your video as a reference to rebuild my cars engine with a new shaft. Its been standing for about 2 year. Today ( 23 / 7 -19 ) Ive turned the egnition for the first time and it all started smooth allmost. But in its in the right direction. Thanks to much reading and buying a book for the car it self and YOUR video helped me all the way. Again thank you ! And srry for my bad english. its been a while. Thanks you so much from Sweden.
Awesome video! Thank you so much. I just did the belt replacement this weekend using only this video and one other for removing the air conditioning compressor belt. Have a great day!
thank you for this video, i got a really nice old corolla e11 with only 130000 km, no rust and the only thing i worry about is the timing belt because its the first one still and i know toyota builts engine to last forever but the belt is with nearly 20 years to old in my opinion, i know the video is super old and you probably dont reaed this anymore, but Thank you you helped me out alot. EDIT: i saw you still put out new videos. I subscribed to you.
Wow! the longest youtube video I've ever watched. good job! thank you. the marking of the belt with white markings was not necessary, as long as the marks are properly aligned. the crankshaft area, like the camshaft area, also has markings that your video didn't show- they're there. but good idea. thank you, again.
Thank you so much for your taking time to give me so much knolledge in this work I must do. I now will co create and show my wisdom. Your a good man for this video and I pray peace and blessings on you and your family. Gods speed my brother
Hello Peter Finn! Your video inspired me alot.. its pretty long but very informative. You are a mechanic with soul and mind.. i wish that more youtubers would be like you. Its very time intensive to find good videos here, because the most videos on youtube are just crap. best greetings & keep on going!!!!!!!!!! :)
Hi Peter. Many thanks for your video, it was a great help in encouraging to 'have a go'. The most difficult part was freeing the pulley at the bottom which was stuck and needed some encouragement with a heat gun. Had fun during the job putting on my best Finnish accent while working through the job - opening and closing bolts with the 'one two' socket. On a 416,000km E100 Corolla (1996) wagon, in New Zealand. :-)
Very helpful. The crank pulley (behind the harmonic balancer) was the most difficult job. I had to tap two bolts and pull using the a puller I got for free from Autozone (definitely do this with the old belt attached with tension). For some reason the water pump was annoying too but very rewarding diy job.
Finally got to move a little but I broke some of the teeth of crankshaft gear,I ordered a new one but gonna be coming in by nov.29,thanks for ur advice ,cheers, more power to you sir and keep on helping others.
wow, thanks peter. i had changed timing belts in several cars before. but i stumbled on my 92 corolla and ended up having the shop do it for $500+. this video just pops up in my feed. so i was curious to see what i missed before. at 23.46, never saw that little nut from below on the engine mount. that explained why i tried to lift the engine up for more room to work on, the whole body frame lifted up with the engine too. not suppose to be that way. i was worried that i might break something else. now i know why. i have another 20,000 miles for my next time belt change. now i know what to do next time.
thank you so much very well explanation .i think ican change my timing belt in my toyota.because your good videos than you so much .please more videos to come
another great vedeo mate i have a problems for removing a bolt on my Toyota Hilux crankshaft!! and still not take away!! but after this vedeo you showing a excellent tool!! thanks again for your help and this really a one of the best ever vedeos how is changed a timing belt!! thanks mate I appreciate your help cheers from Norway
Actual timing belt replacement time for this car is less than an hour....it doesnt take two hours to change it...BUT you have to have the RIGHT tools ( a claw hammer is for framing houses, not for automotive work) , the KNOWLEDGE( see claw hammer), without the unnecessary removal of half the things this guy removes....you will never see a good technician use gloves to work on a car...they arent scared of getting dirty hands...
Great video) thanks for sharing your experience! You make it possible for us rookies to save some money . Taking of the timing covers to see were the oil leak is coming from)
Thank you for this video! It helped me a lot. When loosening the crankshaft pulley bolt i've read you can put in a gear on manual transmissions and have someone press the brakes. That way you dont have to make or buy the special tool
Wish I'd read this hint before starting! I removed the starter motor instead & used a crowbar in the flywheel teeth - it worked. The Haynes manual said there was a flywheel inspection plate to access the flywheel teeth through but my model didn't have one. Anyway, appreciate the video, thanks.
U could first install the alternator belt and the steering pump belt before the engine mount and and thats gonna be a kinda easier thats how i do normally anyway thank u for your deep detail explanation
I believe this video will be huge help, i did get a friggin crankshaft position sensor broke inside my little 'rolla (And it did, thank you for making this video)
I find when I do the belt on one of these engines it is a good idea to do the water pump at the same time while everything is apart, and the crankshaft seal is worthwhile doing as well since the pulley is off.
I am currently doing mine timing belt looks new with 90000km on it replacing that once cam seal is replaced water pump was leaking, replaced replaced crank seal replacing cam oil seal and all seals relating to the rocker cover.
Thanks for this video. I’ll be able to replace the timing belt of my friend’s car. If you don’t have the proper tool to loosening the crankshaft. You can use a long bar with a size socket and turn the switch like trying to crank, and then that will make the job more easy. It has to be before you disconnect the battery. So, continue the rest of the job. Just a trick
DO NOT LISTEN TO DON PABLO....NEVER US THE STARTER TO LOOSEN THE CRANK BOLT....EVER!!!! IF IT SLIPS, IT WILL WRECK EVERYTHING...USE AN IMPACT , AND THE FACTORY FENDERWELL HOLE TO GET TO IT...
I just changed my timing belt… i tried it before on an Avensis 4afe I knew most of it already for your tip with drawing timing marks on the belt and gears was really good, because i had some trouble finding the timing mark on the block It needed it badly… belt was loose and wobbely,, it said it was from 2011 :D soo it has gone over 200.000
Hi Peter, great tutorials & very informative thank you.Did you use a genuine Toyota Timing belt, if so could you give me the part number please. Many thanks Michael
Thank you sir for your wonderful demonstration how to replace the timing belt . I have the same car like this ,how long does it take for beginner like me to do this ?
If you do it like he suggests, twice as much time as the video...because he does completely unnecessary things to access it...if you do it the RIGHT way...less than hour, even for a beginner like you.
1:17:37 notice the "TOYODA" engine block stamp in the belt area to the lower right of the tensioner. Nice little easter egg reference to the family behind toyota. Makes it funnier that the stamp outside the belt cover area on the left is the proper "Toyota" stamp.
Hi Peter. Great video as Usual. I have a question for you. I have had Timing belt changed and all aux belts also, at a garage. Corolla 1998 4A-FE 1.6 AUTO. 95,000 Miles. It was well overdue and the belts were squealing. However, It has been back to garage as there is still a little chirp and squeal under full lock on steering, (Stationary). They have adjusted, but it still squeals under full lock. We did not change idler tension pulley. What would be your thoughts pls. Regards, Steve.
Hello man, sorry for my bad english. Can you teach me how the timings marks of camshaft should be? I had removed the camshaft and i don't know how is the correct possition before put it in the cam.
hello friend peter I have seen many videos made by you and have helped me a lot give many ideas thanks for your contribution I congratulate you . I have planned to change the time strap of toyota corolla year 1999 with an engine equal to this video in tendi everything but I want to know how many pounds you applied to the screw of the tensioner and screw of the damper I only lack those data for myself to do it I like very much the mechanics . I hope your answer and grateful with your youtube channel.
Peter can you tell me please what is the name of the belt on Toyota next to the timing belt on the left in 1:25:51 of this video I need to change that one and don't know what it's called or what is it for???
The hole in the cam sprocket is to align it with the hole in the cylinder head/cam retainer. The easiest way to keep it aligned is to put a pin in it. If you don't have the right sized pin, you can put a drill bit in those holes to keep it aligned. You don't really have to worry about the cam rotating unless you do something drastic like turn the engine over, or turn the crankshaft or camshaft by hand. Please don't suggest people should put a crescent wrench on the camshaft. If you put a nick on the camshaft, it won't take long before the cam lobe and lifter gets wiped out, and create a whole new bunch of problems.
very simple if timrnig belt is not broken just make 3 marks with white pain or nail polish on top and botton pinion with belt. then transfer the old belt marks to the new belt. if it has broken or jump a tooth you need to carefully falow this toyota master mechanic.
Good video. I have the same car but it is leaking from the crank shaft. So I need to do the same and taking away the timing belt to replace the reteen from the crank shaft? Do you have some video about it ? Anyeay tanks
Hi, thanks for explaining about the time belt. My question is I have to rotate the crankshaft pulley to see if is even in the top right? all whole s got to be even right..... thanks again!!
hi peter are the newer corollas cars from 2013-2015 better then the older models from 1991-2001? the olds one built to last for ever. how about the newer ones will they last just as long as the older model corollas?
+Tangy135 Tangy135 Hi, the newer are better, but they last about 500 000 miles, when old Corollas could last 1 000 000 miles. So, both last the long time. :-)
hello i have a question i have a 88 nissan maxima with the 3.0 v6 and it is an interference engine my qquestion is after removing all the timimg belt covers can i just take off the old belt and install a new one with making sure that no cams or cranks move??because my engine runs great now so it will be just a swap will it bend the valves do i have to realign everything againn? im also changing the water pump and tensioner please answer as soon as possible the car has 108000 the belt was never changed will u also recomend to change it now or wait??
Hi Peter, A great video ,very well done !!! My Corolla 1.6 SW 1999 has 150.000 km, never changed the belt !!! I must to do this job very soon . At the same time I want to change the water pump too , what do you think ? Thank you very much for your job .
Finally I changed my belt last week , after 17 years and 165000 km !!!I done it step by step as in your video and it is very easy. The old belt was still in good conditions and not cracked inside or outside........Toyota is phenomenal !!!Thank you very much for your video !Ps. I didn't change the water pump , doesn't make noise or leak .....I just keep it under control.
Greetings, Thank you for the video demonstration. I have a corolla 1998 and I suppose it has internal timing chain and not external timing belt. The title of your video is "How to replace timing belt Toyota Corolla. Years 1992 to 2002." This makes me wonder. From 1998 on all corollas are supposed to have timing chain. Am I correct?
hi thx for great vid.. i was scrooling through it and was wondering if the only special tool was att 39 min? need too get the right tools before i start :)
In case you have a manual gearbox.. Instead of using or in your case making the 'special tool' to undo the bolt on the crankshaft.. you can also put the gearbox in top gear and let somebody press the brake while you undo the bolt. That stops the engine from turning.
Peter thank you so much for your videos. My 97 is still on the road thanks to your series of videos with 295K miles. I've replaced the timing belt, power steering hoses, cleaned the plenum or air tank and replaced both the transmission and trans-axle fluid thanks to you! God bless you.

Nicely shot. I feel I can change a timing belt now!
Amazing - I will soon do this on my Toyota Corolla - 1990 Sedan model.
Thank you very much Peter Finn.
Have fun!
Good instructions, thank you! 👍🙂
You're welcome!
U could first install the alternator belt and the steering pump belt before the engine mount and and thats gonna be a kinda easier thats how i do normally anyway thank u for your deep detail explanation
Thank you for your message. I have read your message. 😀👍
Thank you for the video! I'm going to replace my timing belt on my toyota corolla next week.
+1esaus Great and Thank You for feedback.
thanks for the video this will be my first time doing a timing belt and will be remove and replacing in the morning
+Mike Sorokach Thanks for comment.
I believe this video will be huge help, i did get a friggin crankshaft position sensor broke inside my little 'rolla
(And it did, thank you for making this video)
Thanks for comment 👍👍👍
Señor you forgot to disconnect the battery. Safety first
I have read your post. Thank you for the message. 👍😀
Very good and very clear tutorial for me to understand how to do it...
Glad to hear that!
I find when I do the belt on one of these engines it is a good idea to do the water pump at the same time while everything is apart, and the crankshaft seal is worthwhile doing as well since the pulley is off.
I am currently doing mine timing belt looks new with 90000km on it replacing that once cam seal is replaced
water pump was leaking, replaced
replaced crank seal
replacing cam oil seal
and all seals relating to the rocker cover.
Good point 👍
It's not a trick. It's a back woods shade tree moronic idea...I wouldn't let you work on lawn mower for me...jfcsmfh
Great PETER FINN; tanks. . . from PORTUGAL
Thanks for info. :-)
yes better than some videos i have seen here good job ,
Thanks again. :-)
I just changed my timing belt… i tried it before on an Avensis 4afe
I knew most of it already for your tip with drawing timing marks on the belt and gears was really good, because i had some trouble finding the timing mark on the block
It needed it badly… belt was loose and wobbely,, it said it was from 2011 :D soo it has gone over 200.000
Thanks Sir. :-)
Holy shit lol.
Thank you for the info. very involved process in timing belt change!!
Thanks
Timing chain for the win. Excellent video anyway.
Thanks. :-)
Hi Peter, I use to jam the wrench to body while nut pulley attached, then I crank the engine once to crack loose nut pulley.
axenz axtiz On, please do video. I like to see your jam idea. :-)
Your videos are very helpful. Thank you sir God bles you!
Thanks for feedback. :-)
Hi Peter when you took off the engine mount did you remove the jack and suspend the motor from an overhead beam?
+Steve Hi, jack is mostly in place and Thanks Your comment. :-)
Very good video, covered all the important details, made sense to me and I dont do much tech work
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Peter, great tutorials & very informative thank you.Did you use a genuine Toyota Timing belt, if so could you give me the part number please. Many thanks Michael
Hello, please visit the Toyota Dealer

Did you even watch the video?
Hey peter...you got ahead of yourself on this one....you forgot to tell the people to disconnect the negative battery cable first.!
Thanks for info. :-)
Parabéns meu amigo ! Sou Brasileiro e vou trocar a minha correia devido a este vídeo !! Abraços!
Hello You Brazilian master. :-)
Thank you sir for your wonderful demonstration how to replace the timing belt . I have the same car like this ,how long does it take for beginner like me to do this ?
Good info
If you do it like he suggests, twice as much time as the video...because he does completely unnecessary things to access it...if you do it the RIGHT way...less than hour, even for a beginner like you.
1:17:37 notice the "TOYODA" engine block stamp in the belt area to the lower right of the tensioner. Nice little easter egg reference to the family behind toyota.
Makes it funnier that the stamp outside the belt cover area on the left is the proper "Toyota" stamp.
Thanks for comment
really really good vid, confidence is growing! ima give er a go!
Thanks for comment 😀👍
can u make a video in how to change the head gasket of a corrolla 93-97 model
thank you for your work we apreciate what you do thanks
Thanks, good info !
+vandalstookthehandle Hello, your belts keeps squeal sounds, because they are too old. So, replace all yours squeal belts to new one.
Hello man, sorry for my bad english. Can you teach me how the timings marks of camshaft should be? I had removed the camshaft and i don't know how is the correct possition before put it in the cam.
Hi, I am doing the new video. The video will be ready within one month. :-)
l
Excellent good explanation
Thanks for your help 👍
Greetings KENNY RENDILES from Lagunillas, VENEZUELA 🇻🇪
Glad you enjoyed it!
With that crank can you use a impact driver???
Yes
hello friend peter I have seen many videos made by you and have helped me a lot give many ideas thanks for your contribution I congratulate you .
Thanks for comment 👍
Great video. Will I have to remove my power steering belt or AC belt?
Peter can you tell me please what is the name of the belt on Toyota next to the timing belt on the left in 1:25:51 of this video I need to change that one and don't know what it's called or what is it for???
Hi, This is 44310A - BELT, V(FOR VANE PUMP)
99363-80630
(05/1993 - 05/1996)
Thanks Peter. Question: Should it be play in the timing sprocket gear? Mine sort of moves around. Is that normal, or okay? Does it need something new?
Ok, it should be fixed
+TargaWheels Thank You for comment. :-)
Thank you so much for this comment. Seeing that crescent wrench go on that camshaft really made me cringe.
there is a hex on the cam to hold it service info even says to hold it there for cam sprocket removal and installation.
thank you for making a verry detailed and helpful video.
+Lemonkitten1337 Thank You. :-)
I have this same exact car hopefully now I’ll be able to change the timing belt, can you just come do it for me?
thx for the video and what is the brand of belt ?
Toyota Original part
do you need a jack and jack stand for this ?
Yes
very simple if timrnig belt is not broken just make 3 marks with white pain or nail polish on top and botton pinion with belt. then transfer the old belt marks to the new belt. if it has broken or jump a tooth you need to carefully falow this toyota master mechanic.
Thanks and noted 😊👍
Good video. I have the same car but it is leaking from the crank shaft. So I need to do the same and taking away the timing belt to replace the reteen from the crank shaft? Do you have some video about it ? Anyeay tanks
Yes, you need new gasket and seal in this crank area
Your accent is so cute. .Where are you from?
Russia lol
Hi, thanks for explaining about the time belt.
My question is I have to rotate the crankshaft pulley to see if is even in the top right? all whole s got to be even right..... thanks again!!
+Danny Chuqui Yes, You are right! :-)
Do I also need to change the water pump when I change the timing belt?
Good idea.
hi peter are the newer corollas cars from 2013-2015 better then the older models from 1991-2001? the olds one built to last for ever. how about the newer ones will they last just as long as the older model corollas?
+Tangy135 Tangy135 Hi, the newer are better, but they last about 500 000 miles, when old Corollas could last 1 000 000 miles. So, both last the long time. :-)
Hi goodmorning again,I try heating it with plastic hammer ,still won't move, what if I heat it with blowtorch?thanks again.
Hi, then we need special tool ENGINE SPROCKET EXTRACTOR PULLER TOOL, what look like this link: audi.kris-hansen.com/images/audiworld/pulley_puller.jpg
What size shocket is the big one petar?
hello i have a question i have a 88 nissan maxima with the 3.0 v6 and it is an interference engine my qquestion is after removing all the timimg belt covers can i just take off the old belt and install a new one with making sure that no cams or cranks move??because my engine runs great now so it will be just a swap will it bend the valves do i have to realign everything againn? im also changing the water pump and tensioner please answer as soon as possible the car has 108000 the belt was never changed will u also recomend to change it now or wait??
Yes, you can. Do first many markings to old and new belt. And engine parts too.
Thanks a lot sir. Will it work for a 4E-FE starlet ?
It should
Hi Peter,
A great video ,very well done !!!
My Corolla 1.6 SW 1999 has 150.000 km, never changed the belt !!!
I must to do this job very soon .
At the same time I want to change the water pump too ,
what do you think ?
Thank you very much for your job .
Robert .O Yes, please replace also water pump, because it could go broken too soon.
Greetings,
Thank you for the video demonstration.
+Ali Umar Hi. Timing chain came year 2000.
My Corolla has a timing chain (not timing belt) and it is 1998 model. Thank you
Is your engine 4AFE?
hi thx for great vid.. i was scrooling through it and was wondering if the only special tool was att 39 min? need too get the right tools before i start :)
+michael elholm Thank You for comment. :-)
In case you have a manual gearbox.. Instead of using or in your case making the 'special tool' to undo the bolt on the crankshaft.. you can also put the gearbox in top gear and let somebody press the brake while you undo the bolt. That stops the engine from turning.
👍 OK, good info. Thanks.
