Freddy vs. Jason ft. Cody Leach - Worth the Wait?

- Fellow TH-camr and self-professed "Freddy Fanatic" joins to talk about the long-awaited slasher crossover, "Freddy vs. Jason." Easily "The Avengers" of Dead Teenager movies, Freddy vs. Jason was teased to horror fans at the end of Jason Goes to Hell. Those same fans had to wait over a decade through development hell and unused scrips before New Line Cinema's finally delivered the film in 2003.
While it was a slasher flick that was hyped like no other, "Freddy vs. Jason" hasn't aged well with genre purists and is often dismissed as being yet another crossover event that couldn't live up to the hype, along with Alien vs. Predator and Batman v. Superman.
Over 20 years after Freddy vs. Jason released to the public, is it worthy of its subpar reputation? Is it a better Freddy movie, or a better Jason movie? And, most importantly, why have neither of these characters been seen in a movie since the 2000s?

I feel that Tommy Jarvis should have returned in Freddy vs Jason as the main hero, it would have been great to see him deal with Jason one last time to save the boys of Springwood and face a new opponent for him like Freddy Krueger... Also a character from Nightmare on Elm Street should have returned to team up with Tommy like Dr Neil Gordon from part 3 or Alice Johnson from parts 4 and 5.
It's a shame the writers didn't think of that.
Missed opportunity.

Still remember the day this movie came out. I was 6 years old bugging my dad to take me and he kept saying no cause he knew I would get scared. Literally minutes into the movie where Freddy burns the doll I got so scared I literally ran out the theater lol. My dad said you made me pay for it now you have to watch it. As I got older and rewatch it it’s an awesome movie. Soundtrack is phenomenal especially when Freddy gets brought to the real world it gives me chills anytime I hear that music hit. One thing I don’t really like is that Freddy only gets 1 real quick in this one.
Freddy vs Jason broke ground in ways most movies didn't, without Freddy vs Jason, there probably wouldn't be an MCU or DCEU

I really want another Friday the 13th film and to a slightly lesser extent a new Nightmare on Elm Street film I’m a bigger Jason fan than a Freddy fan
The nightmare remake made $115 million and Friday the 13th made $91 million

I really hope the nightmare franchise has a come back.
Jason & Michael (while great) are just guys in masks who like to stabby stab, and after 10+ movies of that it gets stale.
However there’s limitless possibilities/creativity in dreams. I believe even 9 movies in, there’s still a lot of things that can be done in this series.

Freddy vs Jason is an intentional campy ridiculous movie that knows it’s not meant to be a serious Horror movie, and has fun with it being it was made in the WWE attitude era.
Also, because with pinball machine sound effects during a fight used that would be very ridiculous to put in a supernatural Horror movie with 2 Slasher Antagonists if it was aimed as a dark serious Horror movie.

in most stories, the heroes/villains strength is also their biggest weakness ex. Red Hulk his temper is his biggest weakness, any character that absorbs energy, they have a limit. Fire and water makes sense to be Freddy's and Jason's strength and weakness
As someone who was 15 when this came out and saw it 3x in theaters, yes it was worth the hype. Pre internet, we had Fangoria magazine and that's how I got information on upcoming movies
While I absolutely loved this movie when it first came out, and it still holds a strong place in my horror heart, I recently watched it kinda on in the background and the dialogue is just horrible. They all had the appeal of a a high school play.
This is a solid crossover. I feel that there are some things that could have been done better. Other than that, this movie is almost perfect.

I recall this Freddy vs Jason trailer having a line said by a character which isn’t in the movie.
It’s very frustrating when a trailer has lines or scenes that aren’t in the movie because that is false advertising.
Sometimes they just make it specifically for the trailer or scenes being cut
Lowkey miss this era of horror. Just needlessly gory, entertaining shlock. The blood spraying out of people in this movie like a shower head is hilarious

The movie was worth the wait particularly for the third act which was excellent, but the story building up to it was decent at best. The characters were mostly forgettable that even Lori felt meh. Definitely not up there with the heroines of the individual franchises like Nancy and Alice from Nightmare and Alice, Ginny, and Tina from F13. This movie should have came much sooner though following both F13 Part 8 and Nightmare 5: Dream Child (both 1989). New Line shouldn't have bothered with these "finale" movies of Freddy's Dead and Jason Goes to Hell which never made sense to me when the crossover was already in early development behind the scenes and why New Line wanted the F13 rights in the first place. So why have these "finale" entries as if it's all over for Freddy and Jason for good? I could see them merging the stories of Freddy's Dead and JGTH in a crossover movie if one were to happen in the early 1990s. We could still have Freddy's daughter and the extended Voorhees family in the mix but with them now coming together to stop both killers. Side note: around the 59:20 minute mark that dude on the right above Cody says Ted White would have been 82 when this movie was filmed and says that's Robert Englund's current age. Wrong on both accounts. Ted would have been 76 and Robert Englund is also 77 now so yeah, roughly the same age then and now but neither in their eighties.
No new nightmare because Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. Jason, Michael and Leatherface can be played by any random stuntman.
Ash was definitely what they planned to go with, so much so that New Line's Jeff Katz even wrote a treatment (which served as the basis for the first run of comics)
In a nutshell, it was set at Christmas time, had Ash coming to Crystal Lake's S-mart then later searching for the Necronomicon in the Voorhees house from Jason Goes to Hell, Freddy wanting to use the Necronomicon to free himself from Jason's subconscious, & Freddy having his power stripped away before being killed by Ash (something Robert Englund was all for)
Unfortunately, certain other New Line producers were NOT game on Ash being the hero of the story, & this really soured Bruce Campbell on the whole thing, so much so anytime it's been mentioned in subsequent years he responds with complete disgust.
So, that & the sudden explosive trend of remakes laid FVJVA to rest. Otherwise, we probably would've got it sometime in 2005, directed by either Sam Raimi or Ronny Yu again. What could've been, right?

I think a visionary/creative director like James Wan would be the perfect candidate to do a Freddy movie
He should have been attached to the remake. I feel the movie could have been better with Wan behind the movie.

I assume you got educated understanding that this movie succeeds as a guilty movie treasure or an intentional campy movie because like Batman Forever it knows it’s meant to be campy and ridiculous not badass, dark, and serious.
One of my favorites to watched it so many times as a little kid probably to young that’s for sure xD

Who remembers the blackout of the Midwest & The northeastern seaboard of the U.S. I was one of those selfish people, when people were stocking up on bottled water, lunch meat, and filling their cars with overpriced gas. the question on my mind was; Will this blackout end by the time Freddy vs Jason comes out?

Not to me, It's the tone of the film, it's Freddy vs Jason vs Ash...**without** Ash...the goofy/almost comic book style of the film was an instant turn-off for me..
Imagine a 'New Nightmare Freddy vs 2009 Jason' instead of this Dark Horse comics Abbot & Costello mash-up???

Let's not pretend the two franchises were particularly serious, before this crossover. Friday the 13th was popcorn horror from day one and Freddy went that route from the third movie onwards. And crossovers like this are inherently kinda silly, so trying to play it too straight and gritty would be funny for the wrong reasons.
OH HECK NO! You think Halloween (2018) should have kicked started a F13 and Nightmare revival? I'm glad that didn't happen. I for one hated Halloween (2018) and the fact it not only started this ridiculous trend but pushed out two even horrid sequels and ironically had a trend copycats that sucked like the Child's Play reboot, Candyman revival, Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist: Believer and loads of others I'm not even gonna name but don't care about. F13 and Nightmare didn't need to follow this trend and likely be terrible as well. Both had their revivals during the remake era and they both tanked so at this point it's just best to leave the franchises alone. I hate they're even doing this Crystal Lake TV show thing. THE HORROR the horror realm has been the last six years.
