    This brings back memories! As a kid growing up, I learned the trade from my dad and my grand dad. The Counselor was a very important piece of equipment during the OBD 1 days, but sadly it was never used properly, or to its potential, or generally used enough back then. Way ahead of its time.
    Btw, the way it "kills" cylinders, is it grounds the coil indefinitely while it runs the test. This only works on older cars with one ignition coil for the entire system.

    ...I have a 'vintage' pair of King "Dial-A-tronic" machines that I've tuned older cars with....One is a deluxe model and one is it's 'little brother' ....They are tube type with gauges and scope plus timing light ( like the old Sun machines).....The manual is like a flyer with about a dozen pages.....I was pulling my hair out until I realized I was 'overthinking' their operation.....Using these old 1950s and 1960s machines is as much fun as the cars themselves, for sure.....They work fine, but always remember to remember positive or negative ground when using them....Having a TR3A hooked up with the scope and gauges all running has had more than a few people stop in my driveway, lol ....I did go through a phase where I collected tune -up equipment from this era, fun stuff...I even have a Champion 'spark plug scope' for individual spark plug analysis.....It's just another aspect of car ownership from years gone by, and when it's raining you can still enjoy the history we once had......John(west coast, Can.)......( If you send me an e-mail, I'll forward some pics of these old machines.....)

    Elin, you are a machine. How do you produce so much quality content? Granted, being in the middle of a '76 TR6 restore is a factor, but you are easily my favorite channel on YT these days. Can't tell you how much your insight and experience continue to inspire us as we work on our project. Thanks so much for what you do, keep up the good work---and please don't get burnt out anytime soon! Legend!

    I love how rusty keeps looking at you as you talk. Is he wondering about you sanity? or is he listening for one of the magic words like "walk" or "out"! I'd love to see more videos about using this scope. Thank you Eugene for lending it to Elin! You are a good friend.

    Back in the 60s when I did my apprenticship, we had a Sun diagnostic machine with a rolling road, it was so big ir had a designated room.

    Great to see the scope. I've been restoring a '74 Alfa Spider and I purchased a wide band O2 reader which has been invaluable in tuning the mechanical fuel injection. My son likes to "guess and test drive" but I don't always trust "the seat of the pants" tuning. I can only tell if when the engine "sounds good". Please show us more on the scope.

      Back in the days, this is what separated the true pros from the run of the mill repair shops. I'm a third generation mechanic, and grew up with one of these around the shop. Although my dad didn't mess with it, there was a guy who was an "emissions specialist" who used it everyday. It was like an appendage. Every car he went to, this tool followed. Sadly, around 96, emission laws began to change in Florida. They were no longer required for vehicles that were 5 years old or newer, then it extended to any car that was OBD 2 onward. Eventually, by 2000, they were eliminated all together.
      Because of this, those specialty guys kind of lost their value in the eyes of most, but their knowledge and understanding, and capabilities were priceless. Ahead of their time for sure. Thats why today the scope has become a necessary tool for diagnosis.

    Elin, another great video; thank you! Please take Rusty on more walks or yard 'fetch exercise'; he looks 'antsy'! Black labs are a smart breed and get bored.
    As to Eugene's loan of the 'Counselor II'; what a generous gesture! This vintage instrument is where the 'Analog' world met the 'Digital' future. Back in the early '70's while in the USN, I built an early version of this unit; it was a kit build made by 'Heathkit' to work on my Datsun 2000 roadster. Heathkit is, sadly, no longer around, but I still have the unit on hand in my equipment cabinet, ready to work on my '67 GT6 (and other vintage projects)!
    Looking eagerly forward to much more of this type of content!

    Great video Elin, yes more of this please, Rusty was captivated by it as well.
    My guess from afar is the spark plug is the problem on cylinder 3 just a guess mind
    I try to keep a fuel consumption log on my cars and graph the data. The fuel consumption on my last car, a ford focus diesel, would start to rise sharply once the DPF started to get blocked, but I could never get to use the data predictively. The auto-regeneration never seemed work well and I used to drive regularly long distances on the motorway.
    Well done and good luck from Spain!!

    The labs cope waveform is for actuators, tps, mass air etc. Very useful for intermittent sensor problem diagnosis.

    Extraordinary video Elin. It’s going to be very interesting to see why cylinder 3 is contributing so much less to the rpm when in fact the psi is 180 the same as the other cylinders

    • @philtucker1224
      @philtucker1224 ปีที่แล้ว

      (As one carburettor feeds two cylinders) is it possible that the inlet port supplying gas/air mixture to cylinder3 is starving it of fuel air and sending most of it to cylinder 4? Unfortunately the only way to ensure that doesn’t happen is to fit four choke carb set-up and balance each cylinder vacuum accordingly…

    I don't have enough info to really know yet... right now I'm in information overload, but once I learn how the data is used to analyze, diagnose, and repair an engine I may feel differently. This was interesting... but you left us hanging on cylinder #3... I wish you could have given us just a little more before ending the video, I guess... lol.

    Hi Elin, yes please show us more. Tell us why the TR4 had two cylinders that weren’t running so well. Perhaps on other cars before you rebuild the engine you can hook them up to the scope and show us why they’re running so poorly. Then redo the engine and hook it back up and compare the old poor results to the new results!

    Look up a Sun Engine Analyzer. They were a rolling wall that you hooked up to the engine to manually analyze the ignition system. No computer aided analysis like this 90s scope provides.

    Great video Elin, long time since I have seen one of these. It kills cylinders- either 1 at a time or all of them for the crank test- by shorting the coil -ve to ground so it doesn’t fire. To be honest I am not sure how your new electronic ignition will deal with that if you do it too much…
    I saw No4 was also down a bit, not as much as No3 was. Is there a vacuum leak on the intake side or in the rear carb?

  • @myobboy9973
    @myobboy9973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    cylinder # 3; plug gap set too small, or possible plug #3 faulty or less likely #3 HT lead faulty (breaking down).

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thought too, but nope, it is not a spark plug issue

    As a mechanic in the 70s and 80s you'd be well familiar with an engine analyzer with a scope. In the 70's, th scopes were a little more analog than digital.

    I have a '71 GT6 w/only 11,040 original miles, in storage since 1974. NO RUST. Regretfully, I must sell it as I am 88 yrs old and moving to be closer to the VA hospital in Roseburg, Or. If you or anyone on this forum is interested, enter a comment and we'll figure out how to get in touch with each other. Thanks, and keep restoring.

If not, you can send me the pictures and information to elin.yakov@rustybeauties.com and I will post them for you along with your contact information so people can get in touch with you directly. We have 2300 members and growing, so maybe someone will be interested in your GT6. That sounds like a great car. Only 11000 miles…wow
