We packed these in our helicopter hardcase for emergencies. Always thought they were funny looking and strange. Case had some packets of water, two on these and other survival items. We were bush pilots most of the time so it was essential to pack for a minimum an overnight emergency. We’ll hell we had a chip engine light about 75km out of the nearest town and required us landing in a grassy field on evening. We were able to communicate but unable to get back to camp due to stretched resources during fire season. We ended up spending the night (pilot and myself) sleeping in the back and in the morning cracking these suckers open. We weren’t starving but hungry and I just remember these being actually quite satisfying that morning. We got a ride out and had the machine long lined out two days later. Good times! Long story short, these in a pinch are actually pretty decent. Now for some coffee packets next time!

My mom received a few survival packs from her senior center and she gave me one. I tried the SOS bars out of curiosity and will describe their taste so you don't have to waste money on them to satisfy your curiosity. The best description is the crust part of a Pop-Tart with a subtle taste of apple and cinnamon. Pop-Tart crust is bland and these taste like some kind of baked good an old woman would bring to a pot luck dinner.
Ben you need to try the actual MRE’s. The complete 3 meal ones. I’ve had a couple that were manufactured for the Air Force. My boyfriend retired from the Air Force years ago. Now works at a major airport in New York. One of his buddies had some. I so wanted to try it. He got me one. You really need to try a whole packet. It has 3 meals and a snack. They’re pretty good. Bu bring a knife or scissor. LoL. 💚👍👍🦩
The only real problem here is that is NOT 3 days worth of calories. USDA's recommended calorie intake is 2,000 per day. Under duress, you can burn up to 4,500 per day. Unless you are just laying in bed all day 1,200 calories per day is pretty slim picking. That makes this less than 2 days of food. Now that is still pretty handy! I just hate they felt the need to lie about it being a 3-day pack. 2 days for $13 is fine, why lie?
If you get them by the case ($119 per case of 20), they are far, far cheaper per package. I got them mostly for camping and long plane trips (in which they give you nothing to eat anyhow). Dipping them in peanut butter on camping trips is actually a good tasting, high-protein/high-energy food source -- especially if space is super limited. So don't think of them as ONLY for emergencies.
The thing about the bars & survival is youre going to be malnourished. You have to ration. A bar and half each day. That’s 3 bars every two days. 6 bars every four days and 9 bars every 6 days to last you week
I haven't eaten this specific brand, but all of the emergency rations I've eaten are just bland. Which is preferred over opinionated food you don't like. After all, by the time you open these, you're just trying to survive. It happened to me once and I ate tasteless bars for 3 days. I survived! * takes bow *
Yup. I keep a few of them in the car. But I mostly use them on camping and hiking trips as the main food source (with peanut butter). They are really energizing, but they lack protein and the peanut butter helps with that.

Also while high calorie density and processed easy to digest food is your friend in survival situation, actual food is more substantial thus keeps you satiated more and slower digestion gives same effect. In an emergency if you're weak from hunger/cold/exhaustion you'll starve and die if you don't have a knife to open these.
