Tips for those that are struggling with amp sims.
Tip one: Your signals too fucking hot. Gain staging has the most drastic effect possible. (too little signal is also a real struggle)
Tip two: If your amp sim doesn't have an adjustment that emulates the power section load... get one that does
(brief explanation, that burly ripping rhythm wall doesn't come from your gain knob alone, that sound is the power section starting to break, then *some* gain on top, usually a LOT less than you think.)
tip three: Your eq sucks. Every guitar is different, mine has way too much bottom end, and I mean it's so dark no amount of amp tweaking alone will make that intelligible in the low end, even in standard tuning, that's because my pickups are cheap as hell. So what makes my guitar sing, will destroy yours, there is no one size fits all EQ solution. Identify the problem areas of YOUR guitar, they all have them. Then start getting to work fine tuning the EQ.
Tip 4: should have been tip three, as a rule, EQ before your amp sim. You don't want to amplify shit sounds. it's a lot harder to clean them up post amp than before. This plays into tip 5.
tip 5: Order of effects matters. A lot. You want to distort your swirls, not swirl your distortion. (thank you CSGuitars for that magnificent wording) it's true though. The order of effects drastically changes the sound. My chain for my starting point, is a tuner (if you don't have one, you can use Gtune, or if you have reaper the built in tuner is pretty alright) then EQ, then a boost, I really like the Nick crowe 808 emulation for that. (it's slightly less noisy than the sound I get from the Ignite screamer emulation). I use either the Emissary, or the Nick Crowe amp sim, then Pulse. if I'm using effects, Sometimes they come before or after the screamer, but they are usually before the amp. in some rare cases I'll do something like my reverb, or delay effects between the amp sim and the IR loader.
Those are my tips. Basically. anything you don't want to hear? do it before the amp. Noise reduction? before the amp. Noise gate? Before the amp. EQ? before the amp. That said have the amp sim on when you tune the EQ so you can hear the real effect it's having.
My tone isn't perfect. but these pieces of advice helped me a lot over the years. I'm always still learning.

so i just wanna ask like do i turn down the gain on my audio interface or how do i mess with the eq because when ever i try to use like ninja amplex they just have that offle rumbble without good sound but roots and stevie t i can get a decent sound i also have a pretty cheap guitar so any specific advice?

    • @judse2557
      @judse2557 2 ปีที่แล้ว

like do i mess with the output and inputs and does it matter that i use direct sound and not asio

    • @charlesmayberry2825
      @charlesmayberry2825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@judse2557 having a cheap guitar isn't the end of the world for it, A cheap guitar requires more processing to sound good. The better the source, the less work it is. However, I use either the DAWs own EQ plugin, or I also use FabFilter ProQ if I need to get real surgical with problem frequencies.
What I will say is if you have an awful rumble, I'm going to assume your cheap guitar may be a chinese made Epiphone, because they are notorious for that. The gain level on your interface should be whatever setting gets the signal coming in at -6 to -12 db on the meter.
One of the best things you can do to make a guitar sound more intelligible is turn down the bass, both in the amp sim, and potentially really just do a low cut EQ at between 100 and 140hz, there's rumble there from your guitar, but no useful sonic information, if the information in a particular frequency spectrum isn't useful, we cut it away.
On the direct sound vs ASIO, the difference is the latency. Direct sound, or even "universal asio" like ASIO4ALL will have much higher latency (30-60ms) as opposed to a proper interface with proper ASIO driver (2-6ms) quality wise? Direct sound is fine, it's just adds latency doing it that way.

I'll be posting the exact same comment under every amp sim troubleshooting video, hoping that someone might see it and benefit from it.
For the past 7 months I've been banging my head against the wall over why I can't get a good guitar tone in ANY amp sim. Every single one I've tried sounded dull, lifeless, weak, muddy, fizzy, thin, just completely dead and unusable. It drove me nearly insane because I know from friends how it CAN sound, but could never get it to sound like that myself.
I'm running a Scarlett Solo 3rd gen straight into a brand new laptop with fresh Windows 10, so software issues are unlikely. I have three guitars, two of which are not worth mentioning, the third one is a Harley Benton Fusion III with passive humbuckers - an awesome piece of equipment with some great features. I've seen every review of that guitar, yet never could get it to sound right. I got it for rock and metal, but it never really sounded rock and metal, so at one point I even questioned the guitar. It's not the guitar.
Over the past six months I've changed cables, I've reinstalled drivers and rolled back to older versions, played with Windows settings, changed bit rate, and tried every single amp sim I could get my hands on (Amplitube 5, Bias FX 1 + 2, Scuffham Amps, STL Emissary, Neural DSP, ML Sound Labs, Guitar Rig 6). I changed TRS and USB cables, I played with pickup height, tried INST level, LINE level, no gain, max gain, 12 o'clock gain - everything you could think of.
I've read every forum, every thread, every article, watched every video - all the sims sounded like complete ass. I was going insane. I woke up thinking about it, went to sleep thinking about it.
And then the rock gods extended their picks and showed me the light. I came across a thread in the AudioSex forum created by @MaxSxB, he's on TH-cam. He had the exact same problem and had tried everything. So I scrolled hopelessly through his thread, not hoping to find anything, but I did.
The answer to your troubles is probably a DI box.
Now, I knew about DI boxes before that, but all the comparison videos focused on some insignificant changes to frequencies and what not, so I never really considered it would make a difference, but I was running out of options. I got a cheap Behringer DI100 with an XLR out to XLR in cable, plugged in to the Solo, and lo and behold - the tone was there. It felt like I could hear well for the very first time in my life. The guitar sounded full, rich, it had punch and a roundhouse kick, it squealed and screamed, and all amp sims sounded different from each other. No more endless EQing, no more noise, no more struggles - just plug and play in the best possible way.
If nothing else works, get a DI box. In all seriousness, it will change your life.
TL:DR: Get a damn DI box. Now.

But then your guitar doesn't sound at all like the tone they are getting.. example A.. people showcasing bias fx 2.. and giving their impulse response. You use it an it sounds like crap.. bias fx 2 making loads of high pitched noise even with your guitar muted. I also learned to not over EQ the sound which I was very guilty of with a million notches everywhere which not only affected the amp sound but was eating into the cab tone as well. High and low pass filters and maybe one notch is all I do now. No compression either. Let the tone breathe, and let it blend with the mix. Over processing will make it either sit on top or sit under the other instruments. In fact, I've found these days that the less I do to a mix the better it sounds.

I'm a former audio tech with a decent amount of experience, but always had a problem with obsessing with the science of audio and therefore mixing with my eyes and not my ears. As a player, I could stand in front of my own amp and dial in what I was looking for, but always had problems behind the console. Anyways, I'm getting back into it now, but I'm out of practice and no longer have a space where I can toy with a 5150 and a 1960B for hours to get what I want. This seems like a really solid investment.

I am currently struggling with that issue. Dial back the gain, if the sim has a setup like say... input and output on the amp settings but then the sim has a like master output as well... roll the output back on the (amp) and then increase the master volume. So far the best vst I've come across for free is called ninja. It's a amp sim.. I'm running this amp sim an getting a fairly decent tone..
Trick I figured out the other day going into my amp from the interface though.. just using some IR's leave the amp sim off and play through my amp.. sounded killer like that having the cab sim irs and some eq be the only thing shaping my tone. I then dialed back the gain on my amp as well and adjusted my settings. With active pickups my bass notes were tight an controlled and sounded really clean. . Passive pickups the bass is still flabby but I have stock schecter passives atm.. but still having trouble getting passives under control.

With amp sims most people overdo it. Start with a plain amp get your sound together then add slowly effects.
Goes for floor pedal sims as well as for amp sims on your pc or laptop.
If you have to play physically loud get a good nice clean amp (preferable a SS amp) to amplify the sim linear and proper. Thats all there is to it.
If you dont like all the preparation that comes with sims then youre simply not cut for it.
Go and use a real amp and pedals instead and forget about sims.
Some people are like this and some are like that, neither is at fault.

Buy Peavey Revalver Glenn. It's the cheapest best software for creating a plethora of real authentic sounding models for dirt cheap. I run it as a plug-in on an aux-in then bus the signal to an audio channel for a wet recording. I was an amp snob, I've got my original 1986 JCM800 and a JVM410H! Peavey makes it easy; no more fugging around with mike angles and placement.

      @@SpectreSoundStudios I remember that problem, when I was younger I was 310 pounds, I'm now a comfortable 170. (I'm 6' tall so a good weight). During that I went from a 48" waist... (this was high school I wasn't 6' yet... like 5'6-5'7 and 310)...
during that weight loss (which was at an unhealthy rate I lost it through getting very sick) but lost it in the course of a year, and I was constantly buying new clothing. The awesome part though is when you get to a happy and comfortable weight, maintaining it is a lot easier than you think, and you get to start keeping clothing you buy until they are threadbare lol

Being a fan of Chernobyl Studio, I bought one of his courses about amp sims a while ago (not sure if this is a new one or the same). He just repeated what he already explained in all of his videos with just a couple of extras and I learned very little form it. At the time I wasn't mad because the course was cheap and I took it like I was simply supporting his work, but you can get the same lessons and tricks by watching his youtube channel. Sorry, I am just being honest.

So I put together a band, we have a few songs, some decent recording equipment from a previous band me and the drummer were both in, but quite frankly I'm lost, we all are. We have no idea where this is going and have no clue how to take everything to the next level, if you have any tips or any advice you can give to point me in the right direction that would be absolutely phenomenal!! Love your work and thankyou so much for putting the time into these videos, you were one of my biggest my inspirations for starting a band!

This was very interesting, mainly because I just bought a cheap as chips Ibanez 7-string (GRG7221QA). I put in new pots, replaced the stock pickups with DiMarzios and put on new strings. So all that plus the fact that I am also using the IE should make for some great sounds once I start recording.
This is also my first real look at Reaper. Been using Ableton for ages (and for the most part happy with it) but Reaper looks pretty slick.

No interface yet....I can see why one is required now, but I have attained an even greater respect for you. I am a pain to deal with, much less strangers walking in the door not knowing what they are doing.
I can barely function at 512 samples and 41ms total. After a while I get nothing but crackle. I expect if I splurge on an interface and stuff, it will be stable. I know nothing about this stuff and it is for personal accomplishment. No band...just me. Just want to get some stuff done before I croak. Just wanted to say I would have never even tried if were not for you my friend. Take care:) Oh, no, I do not play bass:)

Hey Andrey, where the frequency starts isn't the biggest question , it's more about getting the right filter in place so it balances with the bass/kick drum, so it will really depend on even the kind of riffs your playing and how fast/slow the music is. That's why I stick mostly to concepts in Guitar Tone Mastery and not specific frequency ranges and stuff like that
