  • I'm back! With a belated unrelated holiday special that will without a doubt catch me a bunch of flack. But hey, I'm just glad to have it behind me. This is the story of Ali ibn Abi Talib, passed over thrice for the caliphate, thrust into the First Fitna, really a guy who drew a very short straw in life.
    Footnotes:
For anyone looking for more information on the subject, I would highly recommend a series of videos by the Caspian Report on the Rashidun Caliphate. As far as I can tell, they lean a little towards the Shia recounting of history, but generally don't point any fingers, except perhaps at the Egyptian delegation, making it out to be a great big conspiracy from the start when it doesn't entirely seem that way to me. Link here if you're interested: • History of Islam, Part...
    0:00 You're cringing, I'm cringing, we're all having a good time
1:33 Ummah referring to the general Muslim community
1:50 Ali wasn't exactly happy about being snubbed this way, from what I gather he was pretty upset about it and thought he'd be a much better leader, but decided not to make a fuss for the benefit of keeping the caliphate together.
1:56 For those of you not in the know (and I know I didn't really mention it) Ali not being the first to lead the Ummah/Caliphate is the main point of contention between Shia and Sunni Islam, which makes it especially ironic that Ali himself tried not to cause too much trouble over the issue.
3:03 This is wrong! I don't have a lot of information on how close Uthman was to Muhammad, but he was his son-in-law, just like Ali. Apologies!
3:50 This isn't 100% confirmed, but it's a plausible explanation. If you want a reason not to like Ali, you can suspect him, but it seems unlikely to me.
2:37 This is more theology, basically Umar used the theological concept of jihad to provide a motivation for taking over the Persian heartland as opposed to just unifying Arabia. The jist of it was that the non-Muslim world was against God and bringing God to them was justified, nothing too revolutionary among monotheistic religions, really. Caspian Report's video on Umar has more details.
2:44 So Umar came riding into Jerusalem and the people there assumed he was going to pray at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but he respectfully declined so that future Muslims wouldn't try to turn the place into a Mosque just because he prayed there once.
4:25 This is where I'd like to deviate from the Caspian Report a little bit. It wasn't necessarily that the whole group that killed Uthman infiltrated both armies to stage a conspiracy and usher in chaos, it was more that some of the people responsible for Uthman's murder wanted to avoid being targetted by having other people fight each other instead of hunting them down, plus some members of the Khawarij (those soldiers who defect a little later) then known as the Qurra, though I couldn't find out what exactly they were doing in general before becoming the Khawarij.
5:25 They also targetted a third guy, Amr ibn Al-As, but I decided to leave him out of the video for the sake of simplicity.
5:58 On second thought maybe I shouldn't be encouraging people in already heated arguments to come over here...
    Music (in order of appearance):
0:00 Alan Menken - Prince Ali (Instrumental)
0:09 Kevin Macleod - Hidden Past (Intro Music)
0:18 Brandon & Derek Fietcher - Desert Caravans (probably not authentic Arabian music, but then the music in my Pompey video probably wasn't very authentic either)
    3:12 Kevin Macleod - Americana
    5:40 Kevin Macleod - Deuces

Reading about the close Family of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w which is according to a Narration the ahl-kisa, which are Ali, his wife Fatima and their 2 first children Hassan and Hussein (as) made me feel not only sad, but also let me question my doctrine (was sunni)
When Ali (as) was struck by ibn muljam (la), his two sons hassan and hussein (as) wanted to avenge his father, instead his father told them to inflict the same wound on him when he dies.
Also Ali (as) was often the first to stay on the battlefield, and always the one which killed them most enemys, this just shows how strong and fierce he was, even tho he was a calm, well learned and warm hearted person.
Also his personality can be seen in his sons which were confronting the wrong and falsehood even tho it brang them death.
For example Hussein (as) died with 71 companions against ~3000 enemys, and he couldve lived if he just pledged loyality to the caliph yazid (la), but that was not the personality of the son of ali (as)...
When you think about it, at least 3/4 of the proclaimed family of the prophet (saw) got killed by people that called themselves "muslim", according to Ja'fari shia it were all. This is truly sad.

I feel the need to point out that all of these original 4 rulers were very, very close friends. They were all early converts to Islam, were all very close friends to the Prophet, and had all fought in battle together literally prepared to die for Islam. All 4 were also among those promised Paradise by the Prophet.
And all these guys had had the very best interest of Islam at heart. You can tell because Ali ibn Abi Talib literally kept transcribing the Quran like a good Muslim. There are also multiple corroborating stories regarding how the later 3 were assassinated. Omar was attacked during prayer and when the rest of the Muslims broke prayer to help him he told them to finish the prayer first and then help him even though he was mortally wounded. Uthman was reading the Quran when he was attached and he protected the Quran with 1 hand. The assailant cut of this hand and then Uthamn protected the Quran with his other hand. The assailant cut off this hand and then Uthman protected the Quran with bot his forearms. Then the assailant kill him. Ali was stabbed while leading prayer with a poisonous dagger. Everyone else was ready to kill the guy but Ali, while he was dying, said do the exact same thing to him that he did to me with the exact same dagger and then let him go.
Literally all these leaders put the religion above their own personal power gain and profit. They put the Muslim community over themselves and many died for the sake of it. It was not about power to them, it was about protecting Islam. There was no ill feeling towards each other if another got power. They all knew each on had the best interests of the religion at heart and they were loyal because of if. Even Muawiah only rebeled because he though he could do a better job of leading compared to Ali. In Muawiah's mind, it was necessary for him to lead the because it would be better for the Muslims. Even though they were at war, Muawiah still corresponded with Ali regarding Islamic laws and interpretation. They still respected each other.
Also, there was never really a requirement for the Muslim rule to be decided by ancestry. Relation to the Prophet was not really a requirement for leading. The Prophet absolutely said that we should look to both this tradition (sunnah) and his family for guidance but there are various interpretations regarding that last point. Some think that means only someone from the Prophet's family should lead. Other say that just means his decedents are should just be looked upon as religious scholars. There was no guarantee that the Prophet's sons would become the leaders even if they lived to adulthood.
Based on your video, I'm going to assume that you incorporated many Shia sources which I believe was done in an effort to say neutral. I get that but I would recommend clearly identifying which narrative is Sunni and which is Shia so the average non-Muslim viewer is not confused. Those 2 narratives often have extremely different recordings and interpretations of what happened and should not be confused with each other, especially to someone who is hearing all of this for the first time. We wouldn't want them to mix up the narratives and come away with a perspective that neither Sunnis nor Shias believe. ;-)

It would have given a bit more historical context and explored his relationship with the Prophet and other figures. This way you can provide more necessary historical information while still having a protagonist narrative structure. All the same, good luck in your future videos and projects :-)

@@jafaral-badri8005 It's not a question of who was most power hunger because what I'm saying is that none of them were power hungry. And I can find many, many examples for each of them. Omar, for example, refused to have any of his relatives be under consideration to be his successor because he didn't want the Caliphate to become a monarchy.
As for expanding the Caliphate, it's haram to impose your religion on others, not to expand your boarders. You are allowed to expand your rule as long as you are not unjustly invading, killing, or forcing people to convert which the 4 rightly guided Chaliphahs never did.
A big factor in Islamic expansion that lots of people ignore is that Islam was fist spread by the mouth as Muslim merchants travels to other lands. People learned about the Islam through trade and then converted of their own free will. Then the Muslim Army would come to assimilate them into the Caliphate because they were part of their religion. So the other Caliphahs didn't do anything wrong in that respect.
And to accuse Uthman of nepotism is blatantly untrue and nowhere near the cause of the fitna. The fitna was caused because some of the governors lack confidence in Ali's ability to rule. It was never about nepotism, it was about different people have different opinions about how to best lead the the Muslims.
Saying the nepotism was the cause of the fitna is like saying George W Bush vs Al Gore was because of nepotism. Both had nothing to do with family but rather a difference of opinion on how to best lead their nations.
Also, I'm 99.9% sure that entire story about Muawiyah making his soliders put the Quran on their spears is made up. Muawiyah is still respected by Muslims today because he was a companion to the Prophet. No Muslim would ever respect a man who sinned by used the word of God to achieve achieve victory in war based on a technicality and becase he knew the other side was too religious to attack!
And even if he did say give such an absurd order of putting the word of God on a spear (which he didn't) the Muslim soldiers in his army would have never obeyed such an order and would have accordingly switched sides and flocked to Ali's camp.

He was the only man in all of history to have been born in the Ka’aba(even the Prophet(SAW) wasn’t born in the Ka’aba) after many witnessed the Ka’aba’s walls opening up(there is a crack in the Yemeni corner of the Ka’aba which governments have tried for over a millennium to fix but it always shows no matter what happens) and Ali(as)‘s mother going in there and after three days coming out of there with a baby. He was the first male Muslim and second Muslim after Sayyida Khadija(as) the wife of the Prophet(SAW), he fought in every single battle side by side with the Prophet(SAW) except for tabuk which the Prophet(SAW) ordered him to govern over Medina and protect his family. He was the owner of Dhul-Fiqar which was given to him by Prophet Muhammad(SAW) which was given to him by the Archangel Gabriel and he(SAW) said Gabriel was shouting “There is no knight like Ali, and no sword like Dhul-Fiqar” during the Battle of Uhud after his sword broke. He married the only daughter of the Prophet(SAW), Sayyida Fatimah(as), who is one of the four ladies of heaven and the lady of the universe(the greatest lady) and he had two sons from her, Imam Hassan(as) and Imam Hussain(as), both would later be martyred, Imam Hassan(as) by poison and Imam Hussain(as) beheaded in the Battle of Karbala when he was the last man alive from his 75 men, they were both the masters of the youth of heaven and Imam Hussain(as) is the master of martyrs. Imam Ali(as) died a martyr(the greatest way of death according to Islam) while prostrating during prayers(the best position during prayer) and in Ramadhan(the greatest month in Islam and most rewarding) and on the “night of power”(which was the night when the Qur’an was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad(SAW), and in the Qur’an this night is “worth a thousand month” so the reward of reading the Qur’an, for example, on this night is more than reading the Qur’an everyday for a thousand months same applies to feeding the needy and the orphans and helping the elderly etc.). You really don’t know how great Imam Ali(as) till you read the details of his life and how much he was valued by God and his messenger(SAW).

M Bayrak those reports were written by haters of Ali(as).

To you or anyone who believe Ali(as) was wrong simply doesn’t make sense. Imam Ali(as) was raised by none other than Prophet Muhammad(saww). If you say Ali(as) was wrong or unjust that’s questioning Muhammad’s(saww) authority.

close friend who doesnt attend the prophet's funeral to appoint himself caliph and takes away the prophet's daughter's inheritance (Imam Ali's wife) but gives tons of inheritance to Aisha...strange definition of close friend you have. and thats just one of them.
