    This was my nephews "fight" song back in 1990. They were trying to kick him out of school because he had AIDS. He was 13. He won and got to go back to school. Like John Cougar, we are from Indiana. Small town called Knightstown. He got the virus from being a hemophilia and having to have blood transfusions. Sadly, he passed away from complications from the desiese at 17 years old in 1995 Rest in heaven Paul ( PJ) Conley. Love and miss you forever!!! Still fighting for a cure honey!!!

    • @raptor182cmn
      @raptor182cmn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +valair Universality might not be the exact right word in this context. John Cougar Mellencamp is well known around the world, this is true. He does however have a reputation for writing songs from a very 'American' perspective. There are many large countries with billions of people who have either never heard his music or if they have heard it they just can't identify with it. Asia, large parts of the former Soviet block, and the Sub-continent wouldn't and don't have any idea what the 'coug' is talking about. Pink Houses, Jack and Diane, Rain on the Scarecrow - just to name a few have billions of people that just have no idea what JCM is singing about at all. I would say Longevity - yes, Universality for North Americans - absolutely...for North Americans specifically.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Logic Makes Sense
      Yes, universal among Canadians and Americans. E.g. a lot of his music is about the confluence/dissonance of urban and rural life, which has been an ongoing theme here and in the USA for a long time. It would get a wtf? in many countries.

    Although, I mostly liked "Authority Song". I went to every concert that came to Edmonton from seeing him (my first experience with concerts) as an American Fool in 1983 - to the last one in 2001 just before I left Edmonton for a new life in B.C.
    Sadly, I had to let go of my entire album collection mostly just tapes for $4 as a donation to the local community records store in Nanaimo B.C. in 2006, before I left for Kelowna and later in 2009 I flew over to Israel. That was my first time flying over the ocean.
    I honestly had to love JESUS more than John in order for GOD'S approval to see Israel would happen for me; can you imagine that? GOD'S AUTHORITY just won me over.
    And now look how much John has grown as a man since then too. I loved his songs for what they said, I loved his music for how it literally moved me on the dance floor; but I always loved John for his heart. I was not a fan just because of 'wrapper'. It was so much more personal and appreciated than that for me.

    This song came out when I was 13. I don't know if it's me or the feeling of this music, but when I feel old, tired, and cynical, I play this and recall what it was to be young and idealistic. We get distracted by the business of life (as Authority wants us to be, so we don't pay attention to what it's doing). That distraction cost us a lot under Bush, and so I'm listening to this more and more these days, just to stay vigilant. Keep fighting authority, people.

      And that's one of the biggest problems in the United States today kids getting in trouble who fight back against bullies it creates more problems. When I was a kid in school growing up in the 80s it was very simple someone started to fight with you you had every right to hit them back. Someone try to bully you at every right you wouldn't get in trouble. Teaches principles they would ask simply who started and don't lie. The one who started would get detention. The other get back to class. Always happy my dad used to tell me let them always throw the first punch I never got in trouble.. my friend had to fight the whole school board because someone was picking on her side and she told him to fight back they try to punish him she won in the end though

    Greatest advertisement for the Midwest. He makes people want to move to Indiana or Illinois. He does for Indiana what the buckinghams did for Chicago.

    I'm Arthur Bhutic. When this came out in 1984 I just turned 9 living in Northwest South Carolina to the north of Travelers Rest. Just 5 years after I lived then in Houston where I am today. Back then, South Carolina was looking like a poor state and America's Depressed Area. In recent years, South Carolina has been trying to brush being a poor state and America's Depressed Area under the carpet and even looks like being brushed under the carpet.

    I play drums and sing lead on this in my band. Not easy!! But this song has really grown on me...just plain fun.

      +Andy G. What do you think? Even though you are a drummer, does the lead guitar sound like a Fender Telecaster?

      Not sure JS. We have a gig this weekend and I'll ask my lead guitarist. This song sounds easy, but it's deceptive. We also do harmonies on it. Rock on.
