I love the golde era! Thank you for this!Obviously we all have our own favourite actors, maybe some of them didn't make it to the list, for me Lana Turner, John Garfield, Monty Clift are so deserving of being in it, at the same time I could not remove anyone from those who are already in the list, all of them deserve to be in it too jaja! I do agree with this list, is undeniable that the ones that did make it deserve to be in it...in the end these 50 actors became more than actors, they all became screen legends, they became the biggest movie stars and when you think about Hollywood golden age all these giants names and faces come to our heads...they are ICONS. All of them a forever inspiration for generations to come in cinema. I wonder how a list of "Screen Legends of All Time" would look if we consider all the history of cinema, not just the golden era but the 110 years or so of icons trough the years, since Mary Pickford became the first movie star until today in 2020, it would be extremely dificult to sum so many in just 50 spots but interesting to see AFI's take on it.
I think AFI should have the list extended to 50 for each list. I'd glad if I Olivia deHavilland, Claude Rains, Joseph Cotton, Hedy Lamarr etc included in the list.
@@EmmaClips-vv9dg and Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Marie Dressler, Janet Gaynor, Betty Grable, Doris Day, Greer Garson, Olivia DeHavilland, Joan Fontaine, Lana Turner, Myrna Loy, Susan Hayward, Janet Leigh, Jean Simmons, Julie Andrews (Shes still classic),
I am very much glad that my favourite golden age hollywood actresses Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor has made it on the list of American Film Institute's 6th and 7th greatest female screen legends of all time.😊❤✨
#11 is way too low for Cooper. He was one of the most bankable stars over a period spanning 3 decades, won 2 Oscars for Best Actor, and was considered the ideal American male and the ideal American hero during his time. His looks were legendary, timeless, and incredibly modern for someone who was born 120 years ago. His sartorial style, both on- and off-screen, epitomized Old Hollywood glamour and masculine elegance. Plus, he had iconic looks that were highly influential and widely copied (everything from the various cowboy looks to the O'Hara look to the Robert Jordan look--the last two of which clearly influenced Indiana Jones). His "strong, silent type" screen persona became the blueprint for actors like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, and Kevin Costner. Also, in hindsight, his understated acting style that made it seem like he was playing himself or wasn't acting at all was every bit as modern as the method acting that would become popular later.
I feel like the Fonda family's influence pushed Henry Fonda ahead into the Top 10 tbh. There's nothing wrong with Fonda or anything and he deserves to be included, but Gary Cooper was more "Top 10 worthy" IMHO
@37:38 - Blockbuster pledged a minimum of a half-million dollars to help AFI preserve old films. I wonder if Netflix or any other streaming services do the same thing today.
The fact you even have to wonder if they do says it loud and clear: they don't. And that's a travesty considering today they have the greatest potential for preserving the historic hallmarks of the film industry.
It's fitting for Hepburn and Bogie to be number 1... Both of them worked so well together only for this one movie 🎥 but both of them in other movies 🎥 too
The crazy thing to consider is, the next time AFI releases a revised list they won't be able to divide it into Actors and Actresses because that won't be consider inclusive enough. So, I guess the next list will simply be entitled, greatest performers. Ernest Borgnine states in the video that Lee Marvin told him, "This is the end of an era, we will never see the likes of these people again." "He was right."
At least where Newman is concerned there was an add-on at the start with Jack Lemmon saying that the nominees had to either have started their career in or before 1950 or had to be dead (hence why people like John Belushi and Divine were nominated but not - say - Clint Eastwood or Shirley McLaine or Newman). Still waiting on that sequel he mentioned lol
Given the criteria of screen legends that made their first film before 1950 then this list is slightly wrong. A lot of deserving people here but here is the list as it should be Actresses 25 Louise Brooks 24 Norma Shearer 23 Doris Day 22 Sophia Loren 21 Rhonda Fleming 20 Vivian Leigh 19 Janet Leigh 18 Coleen Moore 17 Lilian Gish 16 Jean Harlow 15 Joan Fontaine 14 Deborah Kerr 13 Greta Garbo 12 Virginia Mayo 11 Olivia DeHavilland 10 Marilyn Monroe 9 Ingrid Bergman 8 Audrey Hepburn 7 Irene Dunne 6 Jean Arthur 5 John Crawford 4 Bette Davies 3 Ginger Rogers 2 Katherine Hepburn 1 Myrna Loy Actors 25 Dick Powell 24 Tyrone Power 23 Tony Curtis 22 Laurence Olivier 21 Leslie Howard 20 Bob Hope 19 Frank Sinatra 18 Ray Milland 17 Gene Kelly 16 Alan Ladd 15 William Holden 14 Glenn Ford 13 Humphrey Bogart 12 Robert Mitchum 11Burt Lancaster 10 Kirk Douglas 9 Errol Flynn 8 William Powell 7 Fred Astaire 6 Spencer Tracy 5 Clark Gable 4 Gary Cooper 3 James Stewart 2 James Cagney 1 Cary Grant Personal preference clearly on show here.
I think Jean Harlow was a better actress than Marilyn Monroe. Jean Harlow's roles were much more sexy, powerful, fearless.. but Marilyn Monroe was, always, playing the same dumb roles. Also (in the original AFI list) there's Barbara Stanwyck, i mean, how the hell they put Marilyn Monroe #6 in the list, and Barbara Stanwyck #11?!!! This made me sooo mad. There's a lot of wrongs in the AFI list.
And Marie Dressler (and maybe Norma Shearer) should've make it into the AFI list. Harold Lloyd too. In fact, there's many actors and actresses deserve to be on the list.
HolyDivy: I agree with you! I admire so much Tyrone Power! He was a talented and subtle actor but he was very underrated because nobody forgave him for his handsomeness! What a shame!
@@plutoshearer3650 and Vivien Leigh shouldve ranked higher she was 16 on the list but her films, GWTW and ASND are considered some of the best films, tbh Marilyns best film is probably Some Like it Hot (which is very good) but that movie doesn't compare to GWTW and her other ones, I feel like Bette Davis shouldve been number 1 as much as I love Kate Hepburn she didn't deserve it, also
Such a great list indeed. Deborah Kerr should be in the top 25 hands down. I would have moved Carole Lombard up higher. Gary Cooper is in the top 10 no doubt. Nothing against Bogart, but I wouldn't have him at number one. Just my thoughts on some of the selections....
Wayne didn't deserve #1 for the simple fact that his range was not great. He essentially played the same character in every film. Bogart was much more diverse in his roles.
Katharine Hepburn, no.1? Definitely overrated. Her overwrought trans-Atlantic accent is so distracting that I can't really appreciate her acting. Most of her movies are not my cup of tea either.

Astaire & Fonda both were too high. Should’ve had Gable & Cooper higher than both.

I laughed when I heard that part… “But who will pledge the money to preserve Blockbuster?!”
I love them all. No matter who they are and where they come from.

Ingrid Bergman... always and forever.

brilliant actress

Not only should Monty Clift and Paul Newman be on this list, but they should be high on it as well....
Muni is the biggest snub (as far as left off the list)

there is no need to argue about the actors' places in the rating - they have almost given their soul to God, and they don't care ...

This is all American stars don't expect Dilip Kumar ,Bruce lee, Alain Delon, Jean Paul Bemondo, Kemal Sunal, Zbigniew Cybulski
Bette Davis was a better actress than Katherine Hepburn, and Fred Astaire was not better than Cagney or Tracy as an actor.
katharine was the queen, bette davis the duchess
They're talking about male and female stars, not actors
Sharon stone gets more unbearable and says less while talking more as they get further along in the rankings
Sorry Woppie; obviously Bettie Davis was beautiful until she hit 60
I think she means by the standards of Hollywood. In that sense she wasn't competition (nowadays she'd be considered a beauty)
John Wayne not #1?
I guess he wasnr politically safe enough like Bogie.
