- I'm back in London today and in particular Knightsbridge which is home to one of the best Italian restaurants in the country known as Osteria Romana. Can you believe it's only the second time that I've reviewed Italian food on the channel? Lets give it a go!

I am of Italian descent, and I nearly wept as you dined. My Grandmother was a gifted cook, indeed a chef for wealthy Parisian family before WWII when she had to leave. Every dish was simply presented of the very best ingredients, exquisitely done with a deft hand. She did everything but desserts. We had fruit in season, ice cream in winter. Oh, but you brought back a flood of memories. Mille Grazia.
I think "unpretentious" is the best way to describe Italian food. What makes Italian food stand out is the quality of the ingredients.

My wife of 49yrs is Italian and she is the best thing that as happened to me, Italian cooking is the best in my opinion, in the early 80s my wife took to me italy to visit her auntie's and uncles about an hour away from Naples in Campania,there had been an earthquake about 6 months previous and her auntie's house although just about safe to live in was in a right state with no running water gas or electricity and all cooking was done on a wood fired stove so we ate by candle light, that meal of ragout with rigatoni pasta was the tastiest meal ive ever had in my life they were such nice people and never moaned about the situation they were just happy to be alive, thats why i not only love my wife but also the Italian people, they keep food simple, even in this day and age i can give my missus a fiver and she would make a meal for the four of us, it would be simple but delicious and tasty, great video as normal Gary, its a 10 from me. Cheers mate..( by the way after a while they were rehoused in a modern flat)

I follow several food reviewers but this is easily my favourite and the only channel i watch daily partly due to Gary's no nonsense approach and charm.
Gary is a legend, crap on TV nowadays, Gary is our saviour & making us all fat, haaaa, only joking Gal, 🎉xx
Went there a while back, food and service was top notch. Yes, it's expensive, but sometimes going out for a meal isn't just about the food - it's about romance, passion and creating memories that'll last a lifetime. 😊

I'm curious Gary, why not 10/10? You normally explain your score. I reckon, since I can never get there, I'm going to buy some oxtail and try making it, I'll never be as good as that chef (it was so nice of him/her to comment on your post) but hopefully, it'll be halfway decent!
Great ingredients don’t need a place to hide. From the little touches of oil, basil and quality bread, to the pork belly and then the past every element of that meal stood out as first class.

The Italians genuinely understand the secret to good food: keeping things simple, using quality ingredients, and putting time and care into the small stuff. The meal looked delightful, and, as always, it was a delight to watch your review.

Yeah the food in Italy is so good because of the quailty of the ingredients they use.
As opposed to what?
Cuisine around the world should just be appreciated in its own right regardless of where it came from or the philosophy behind it.
Unfortunately Italian (and French) food people are known to dismiss everything else ...

Considering the location and the quality of the food, I wouldn't consider this meal to be expensive for a treat. Not one for everyday lunch, but for a celebration or to impress someone important, probably well worth it.

For the quality of the food and the portion size I think you got your money’s worth, I’m no means at all wealthy but you hit it right on the nail being a treat. I love that you do a variety of budgets with all the different locations that I would never have imagined so I tip my hat to you Gary for opening my eyes to the good, the bad and the ugly lol 😂 another brilliant video and thanks ☺️

I've seen couples on their wedding day with less enthusiasm and satisfaction than you're showing in this video. It's so good to see someone happy. Next time have the pasta first then the meat course and salad or vegetable second and see how that goes for you.

Those premises are out there, you need to be street wise and Gary certainly is that. Always excellent reviews be it a greasy spoon or top drawer establishment.
My Mum and I were saying how you cheer us up. Always so enthusiastic and a nice bloke. And how funny you are on the rare occasion that you get angry! She said: "The Rick Stein chippy?" And I said "yes." She said; "I don't think he ever DID complain, did he?" And we sat there laughing! You really are a tonic Gary! They should prescribe your channel rather than anti depressants. Much better for you and probably more effective!
I agree. I was exhausted the other evening entertaining the kids all day while off school and when I got a few mins in the evening and saw he'd uploaded a video it really cheered me up. His positivity is infectious.

Olive oil and crusty bread to dip into it, oh pure joy. The place is sensational. Pasta looked delicious, everything is perfection. Desert was outrageous. Drooling again. Great show Gary. Worth every penny.

Another great review. I'm lucky enough to have Italian friends who live just outside Rome. The whole family lives in a 4 storey house with an apartment for each family on each floor. In the basement is the huge kitchen where Nona Alvira (sadly no longer with us) used to rule the roost. This restaurant reminded me of her cooking. One or two simple ingredients, but the best and well done. My husband and I drove to Rome via a lot of the Spanish regions. We were thinking of a gift to buy for the family. What's the best gift for Italians? Food, of course! So we bought regional foods and wines from every region we drove through, and made a hamper. Alvera's eyes were so wide when we gave the hamper to her. And do you know, something of everything we had bought was incorporated into every meal we had with them for our stay. It's the Italian way 😁❤

Gary, I have to say this year, your reviews have been extremely pro-level. I’d imagine you’ve been reviewing restaurants for a decade. The way you described such simple dishes, yet made me feel like I could almost taste them, was amazing. I’m afraid soon you might get snatched up by a TV channel as their restaurant critic.

It reminded me of eating Italian home cooked food when I was in my teens, My best friend from school was Italian and his Granny used to do all the cooking. I was lucky enough to be invited round for lunch or dinner a few times and the food was to die for. I have eaten in quite a few Italian restaurants over the years but none ever matched her freshly sourced and made Italian food.

The secret of Italian cooking is always simplicity, few ingredients and yes the outcome is heaven on earth when done properly. That certainly looked the real deal and a little bit of Italy in the heart of London. So very thrilled that you reviewed , we need restaurants like this.
My first wife was Italian, her Mum used to cook this standard of food constantly. She was a second Mum to me. A fantastic cook. I can honestly say I never had a poor meal in 27 years.

I have to say, it confuses me how people romanticise about the simplicity of Italian ingredients but criticise classic English dishes for being too simple or not having a good enough variety of seasonings. I love Italian food when it’s done right but I love English food too. To my mind they both have a similar ethos about letting the ingredients speak.

Rigatoni as you know has grooves/lines on the pasta so that the sauce etc clings to it making it even more delicious.

One of the most inexpensive meals to make is Italian, I'm all for good produce, but I couldn't justify those prices. Great review by the way gary 👏

My grandfather is Italian but my grandmother is English. I was born in England, Kent in 1985 and have always been brought up on Italian food. I've been to Italy many many times and love it there. Some Italian restaurants in England are good but to get the best experience you need to visit Italy. I love my British food though but I recommend everyone try Italian food. It's beautiful, delicious and up there with the best cuisines in the world.

But that’s what makes Gary’s reviews stand out! You get everything from Greggs to celebrity chefs with local run cafes and fish & chip shops in between, all reviewed and delivered with the same enthusiasm and honesty. Never change or cut out the every day food reviews Gary .

One of the (many) strengths of Gary's channel is that he reviews every type of restaurant, cafe, fast food outlet, etc, on their own merit. He was as fair to Gregg's as he was to Osteria Romana. You can only reasonably compare high-end with high-end, mid-range with mid-range and budget with budget.

I am salivating looking at that glorious rigatoni dish. The bread looks wonderful, I would have used it to sop up every last bit of the sauce. I would have loved to see a fresh salad. Wonderful video. Thank you!

well Gary i don't want to make you jaleous but i was a trucker who rode every week to Italy. There we unloaded en reloaded and did some deliveries befrore we drove back home. We always went to a little restaurant near parma where 'la mama' cooked and her husband served . Everything was fresh and the bread she baked herself. They even made their own Limoncello. The man himself had a very strange hobby, he went from farm to farm around Parma in search of the best ham he could buy and when he found a ham to his satisfaction he was so proud that he walked in his restaurant carrying the ham like a baby. After everybody praised him enouch he took his knife a made slices that were so thin you could see throu them. but omg what a taste! So now for the part to make you jaleous lol. we had all the Lambrusco or prosecco we wanted,as much bread as we wanted, frsh grated parmacheese,3 dishes and after the souper all the limoncello we could drink for 10 pound hahahahahahaha well that was an eleven out of ten ;)

@@GaryEats well when you drive around with a 24 meter long truck loaded with cars in the innercity of london,paris milan or brussels you can hardly speak in terms of travelling hahahahaha i had once the privelege to deliver cars on a british mail site in the inner city of london where i only could get on the terrain driving in a certain way and i can asure you when they are talking about 'cold sweat' i fully understand the meaning of those words :) best regards and i wish you a very big and healthy appetite
Who would've suspected a restaurant in Knightsbridge would be expensive? To be honest, I far prefer the old school trattorias like up in Barnet and Camden.

This restaurant, given the location, could've probably gotten away with charging more and, If anything, I was expecting it to be more expensive. (Hope the owners don't read this and decide to raise their prices.)
