I am constantly checking TH-cam for White Lies reactions as well as other more obscure alt rock bands, and I appreciate you guys in this in-depth format you give. Death was my first listen too years ago and ever since I’ve been hooked. In America we have a store called Vintage Stock for all kinds of collectibles, and I always check their CD section for my artists. Last year I found a legit 2009 copy of To Lose My Life a while back and the cd is this elegant and shining black like something straight out of a horror film. Absolute favorite band, and I always listen to Death when taking off on planes. That fear of flying has a hold on me 💙
What a great comment and anecdote, Kolby. We really appreciate your viewership, kinds words, the story you shared, and seemingly your taste in music as well. Jon and I aren't afraid to pick some obscure things across genres, but I think it's safe to say we often times find ourselves returning to alt/indie music, so perhaps this is the place for you. Welcome to the channel. - Andy
"Unfinished business" is the real deal on this album, for me. Great album, by 2010 standards, and many of the songs are still totally ok today. Thanks!
That bassline has a U2 feeling to me, but with fewer leather trousers and gold medallions. Compare "Gloria" and "With or Without You". IDK what White Lies thought, but the producer had a mind full of stadium rock.
Great pick! I was just listening to a bit of this album yesterday, so was surprised and happy to see this pop up. White Lies are super underrated for me - their catalogue is full of good tunes like this. Really lovely and uplifting despite getting a bit of flak for angsty melodrama, especially on this first album - but I can give some then-teenage guys a pass for writing slightly goofy lyrics :) I really love their big, dramatic style even though it might be overblown for some tastes. Their album "As I Try Not to Fall Apart" is one of my favourites of 2022. Thanks for sharing, guys!
We are so glad you enjoyed the tune! And how serendipitous is it that you were just listening to this band only to find them posted here on a Monday? Cool stuff. Thanks for dropping in and giving it a listen. Cheers. - Andy
Ive never been able to work out why 80's had such a terrible sound, tinny, thin and just awful. Surely a lot of the recording equipment was the same that had been used during the 60's and 70's, and yet those records have a much rawer sound.

Same same! I'd love a reaction to Nothing To Give.....
Perhaps one of the greatest intro songs in any debut album ever ... what a banger tune
