After Thoughts about the Video: According to the owner this machine has smoked a little on start up since new and was told it just needs to break in by the dealer. He changes his own oil and has never had to add oil in between services so didn't think anything of it(3500 total miles with 750 change intervals). I am astonished there is no low oil pressure light on this thing.
These particular engines, for 3 years were subcontracted out to Subaru to build while Yamaha Japan was rebuilding their factory after a Tsunami. Subaru dropped the ball and they have huge oil consumption issues. Yamaha extended the warranty 2 years to help consumers out but we all know how warranties actually work.... or don't work. They released upgraded piston rings(which I used) and better cylinder/jug casting(which I also used). I will say the new piston rings are some of the springiest I've ever used, so they should hold compression/oil very well. I figured the oil consumption was coming from 1 of the 2 intake valves and hopefully the new valve seal remedies this. I put 5 miles on around the neighborhood and there was zero smoke. I then put 10 miles on in the mountains and still no smoke, so hopefully we're good and better than new.

Cool valve keeper trick. Thanks man! Every time I see one of these machines tore down I'm always amazed at how little there is to one of these considering what they cost.

@@sixtyfiveford Plastic moulds are cheaper than casting moulds. Thanks for the tip with the keepers, I also keep a tiny little ball peen hammer just for gaskets, absolutely tiny one, with both front face and ball smooth and unblemished, to get the best cut possible on the gaskets. The small ball you also just press it down on the bolt holes, twist it once or twice, and it cuts the hole out neatly.
Yes the new piston and pot complete is not cheap, but Yamaha often only has only a standard size piston on a lot of them, no oversizes on anything.
My Border Collie [who reminds me a lot of Ginger] watched Ginger attack the exhaust and she wanted to join in to help.
She pulled a leg muscle last year running like Ginger on the ice. It took her 2 months to fully heal.
She hates the exhaust sounds. Yeah, Ginger hurt a leg years ago running and I seldom let her full gallop like this anymore.

Lack of lubrication. Amazing how some people don't even check the oil, pretty basic and important.
I think their engineering all new stuff to train people not to. This one you have to remove the seat, then remove a rubber grommet that is not easily reinstalled. Kind of a pain. Run out of oil: from a manufactures perspective it's probably the best way to sell new machines as the blame is 100% on the operator and not the manufacturer. My wife has made fun of me for checking the oil on rental cars while on vacation...

I had the same thing happen to my 02 Grizzly 660 a couple years back. I didn't check my oil often and it went dry....making that same knocking sound. I had to have the top end replaced (that took most of the summer) so I purchased another wheeler to play on until it was fixed. They charged me over $2000...😳. So now I check my oil EVERY time I want to start it. Great job, Moe👍🏻 I wish you lived in Maine so I had someone dependable for repairs.

Quite surprised if head survived. Almost always motorcycles and similar bust head completely cause lack of camshaft lubrication.

See that's my problem. I always get a plugged fuel injector noise confused with a slapping piston sound and I'm not even going to incriminate myself and say I tend to to wack my gasket material harder than I should. 😁

I just put a new top end kit on my bike I got lucky with my cycliner and I had it Honed out Professionally and abit over sized piston but and put it all back together and I started it up a few times no smoke but today it was smoking its head off till it got warm , but I forgot to change the vale stem seals my stupid fault do you believe this is why it's still smoking the bike only has maybe a half hour on the new top end

I was afraid I'd have to wait for parts. Some parts are a months out which I feel lucky I don't have to deal with.
I have waited for parts for on average 3 months lately for OEM on new model powersports.

The number of times people told me not to put the bolts back in their corresponding holes and I just shake my head every time. There's no guess work no head scratching and forgetting.
we have the same Wolverine....... was wondering why you didn't pull the engine out and go through it more? i worked as a Master automotive technician for the last 30 years, and have found that leaving metal in the engine always comes back to haunt you. intersting trick with the plastic sheet over the top of the valve spring to re-install- i have a 1/2" thick by 1.5" diameter puck of aluminum to put under the valves to keep them up when re-installing.
A number of reasons why. It didn't have catastrophic failure so there was no large metal debris in the engine case. The actual wear off of the piston was very minimal. The drained oil had no metal particles large enough to harm anything. The filter had caught everything that was pushed through and any damage that was going to happen would have already happened. And probably finally; 3-4x the labor cost for the customer.. and that's not cheap. Now it threw a rod and sent chunks of aluminum through the entire case absolutely tear the whole thing apart.
Bummer! Something I've recently experienced once again from Inheriting Sins of the Previous Owner, buying something you know needs to be rebuilt based on knowledge of Last Ran Low on Oil isn't always a golden goose situation. I'm currently rigging a lift to pull out a burnt up Kohler K321 out of '77 JD 214 that I thought was an easy rebuild situation, which turned out it was cheaper to repower than to buy all the special tools you'd need to repair the vast amount of damage I found inside. 🤦♂
At least in your case it wasn't a 'Hello Rodney!' situation.
I love that you can repower old stuff. These days it's near impossible to do an engine swap in anything.
Dang. Crazy that valve shim was the holdup. Hotcams and Wiseco both offer shim kits in various diameters. Often your local power sports shops will keep a kit in stock and you can purchase individually. Although it may be worth it to purchase a kit for future repairs to avoid the downtime.

Absolutely! You can thank Subaru for that garbage. That's who they had build these motors when their motor factory got destroyed after a tsunami in Japan.
@@sixtyfiveford my buddy had a Kodiak with the 708 motor , it burned more oil than gas !! He ended up selling it after a year of riding
So, Design bad or assembly? Mine is getting entirely rebuilt right now at a Yamaha dealer. Once of been rebuilt is it likely good or should I move on from this machine once its done?
@@bobbrown2039 Poor manufacturing. Yamaha did have newer piston rings that are supposed to eliminate the oil burning. The only other major issue is the sprocket that runs the oil pump/ water pump can come loose and you have no oil pressure/ water cooling. If those two issues are remedied during the rebuild it should be no reason it's not a reliable machine.

You can just use paint to paint a surface thrn transfer a pattern onto gasket maker
This is why I check oil on everything i own...regardless how new something is or even brand new...all engines use oil...idc what anyone says bc they all do...some more than others...and it seems the newer the vehicles are this day n age the more they seem to use oil (in my line of work in the automobile field) I see it daily

Very true. This guy is pretty good though and only calls me for the serious stuff. I think him doing maintenance is what saved the bottom end of this engine. The oil consumption is a known problem for this particular year/engine, so really just bad luck.

Great video as always. Did you check to make sure the oil squirter wasn’t plugged by any metal debris? I’ve seen this happen on bigger industrial engines. It becomes an expensive missed step later on.
Very true. I did a visual inspection but didn't do a manual run the pump test. I wasn't too concerned with the lack of large particles in the sump and that it was run out of oil. If it had a decent amount of oil and this happened I would have for sure gone further. The later requiring full engine/trans removal.

Great content and good job. I do the same things with my hardware and parts by marking them. Not to get too personal but ball park what should I charge for a jug change on machines like this.

Around a grand. It depends a lot on the engine though as some have Chinese Jugs/pistons in kits for way less. Those you would be closer to $400.

Bolts in holes!
Good idea to put some of the bolts in their holes, and to mark the holes. They should've had a low oil light or cut off switch, but the owner should check it every time. Did you use follow me on the drone or do it manually?
I did it manually. The last couple times I tried follow me it hasn't worked. It worked when I first got it and it was great. I'm using the DJI Mavic and really need to use it more than I do to get practice.
Honda is the only company that not just has an oil light but has a physical sensor that cuts off spark when it senses low oil.

Hope it doesn't have the waterpump impeller that is just set screwed to a round shaft. Nice thing to happen when mine was two years old, bought brand new 2017 and no Yamaha recall.
I didn't see any mention of water pump failures on the 708cc. You can blame Subaru for poor engine build quality from 2016-18. That's right after the tsunami destroyed Yamaha's Japanese engine factory and they were rebuilding. In the mean time they had Subaru manufacture their engines and they made a lot of cost cutting changes.

You meant bored out. Not honed. Thats a nikacil cylinder. You cant bore them.

You have to learn the formula to find the proper valve shim. The way youre doing it isnt just a waste of time. Youre getting a false reading with the caps not being torqued down.

So true. I was excited to use that seldom used extension. It generally only comes out for automatic transmission removal jobs to get the top bellhousing bolts and I can't remember the last time I did one of those.
@@sixtyfiveford People keep saying you can't work on today's engines but you prove them wrong on a consistent basis. I always tell them you can with some locking extensions and swivels plus some extra respect for the plastic parts. I recently felt that same excitement when I got to bring out my 2 foot long #2 phillips to work on a furnace.

I didn't want this half taken apart machine to sit in my shop for a month+ so I opted for the less than ideal outdoors. It was miserable at times but better than I thought.
Excellent repair and video! I had seen your gasket tip previously, but the valve keeper install was a new one- I recently rebuilt a 660, that the timing chain came off of; the cardboard tip is handy with all of the different length bolts. I changed over to studs for the head.

I actually had the same happen to my Yamaha 660(rhino). It was smoking pretty bad so I rebuilt the motor for a kid with a tight budget. He didn't want to pay to replace the cam chain/extra labor involved. It ran for year/half hard and slipped a tooth. I bought it off of him and luckily it only bent 1 valve. Did the work and it's been going strong for me the past year.
I have used a few different paint pens over the years and the last set has been the best. These are the exact pens I buy amzn.to/3ULxIJH . So many colors makes it nice as I will put random color marks all over an engine bay(you can see a few in the video) for different hoses, connectors. I have used the "mechanic pens" and these work just as well for far less.
could only be the owners fault running out of oil and check valves. even his fault not sending it out to a mechanic for service of hes not even able to do that. im pretty sure its been eating oil for a good while..

They weren't at all. That's a great thing about having roller ball bearings.

Great video..thks! Bought a used 708 wovie and it runs great, but didnt check oil level when I bought it. Went and did oil change only 1 quart came out! Filled it up and installed a oil pressure warning light too. Do I need to worry that this machine is going to die soon??? only 1500 miles and 200 hrs.
Just always check the oil. They're known for oil consumption. The water pump drive also is a common issue. Some people never have an issue but a good handful do.

You can replace valve seals without removing the cylinder head with the rope trick.
With the engine on the compression stroke and spark plug removed, simply lied as much rope as you can fit into the cylinder. Then rotate the engine so the piston is pushing the rope up against the valves to hold it in place. Then you're free to work on the valves with the springs removed.

Possibly. Lucas is just 60weight oil with tacking agents. So in theory it would have burnt less oil because it's molasses.

Did you pull the cover and check your oil pump gear? I'm getting ready to tear mine down to try and rebuild prior to a problem. It's a 2016. Has all been well since the rebuild?
Everything has been great. I did not pull the cover as it is a little more involved than that. If I recall you have to pull the engine to do so and or cut the frame/reweld it. That gear also runs the water pump so instead I use my infrared camera to make sure the coolant was flowing.
@sixtyfiveford right on. I tore mine down yesterday. Everything looked great but I'm still gonna rebuild it. Planning to cut the frame and make it removable today. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm hoping if I take all these preventative measures it will last me several more years.
Cool video. This is a huge piston. 20 hp? How did you retain the wrist pin after reassembly?
These are probably pushing 40hp with the high compression and rpm they spin at. These pistons pins have a clip on each side. I put one in pre and carefully/painstakingly snapped in the second without dropping it inside the engine case.

No particular reason. I usually do a few renditions of each thumbnail and pick one. I was changing some others and thought this one might be more visually pleasing.... Why, did you like the Sling Blade one?
