Can they be replaced with a solid pin

    • @marklewis4664

      Instead?

  • @randelpruett3685
    @randelpruett3685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Just a short note to add. Put graphite or lithium grease on the smooth part of the pin contacting the bushing. Do not over tighten the nuts. If the bushing is turning with the hinge it's too tight. Loosen it just enough so the bushing stops turning with the hinge. Otherwise, great, helpful video.

Few things that will keep you from actually “removing” the door, air tools (3” cut off wheel) and a mini jack stand to support the bottom of the door with some rags if you’re worried about the precious paint on your 430,000+ mile work hog. ( most any weld shop will have them) throw a rachet strap on the top of the door to a rafter, and you saved your self from an hour of work and hurting you back on the floor board. Smarter, not harder

Thank you for the great video, just did this but built a rudimentary door support, loosened the bolts and wiring, supported the door with the stand, about a foot away from the truck then, just pushed it back in place, easy peezy! Thank you, again Jon!

Used your vid as a guide. Good job. I too used the threaded hinge pins. Makes installation very easy compared to the pins that you have to press in. Well worth the additional cost.
Line the pin up, place a 5/8 wrench on the top of the pin and turn the lock nut with a ratchet and a 11mm socket. Pulls the pin in very nicely and seats it properly. Too easy!
Checking the door after rehanging ... the door opens smoothly and the entire weight of the door is on the hinge pins - No weight at all on the catch. Rattle is gone and wind noise reduced to nil.
2 hours total using an air powered angle grinder (underpowered) from door off to door on and done.

Great Video. I have a 2002 Silverado. & my complaint is the same; "wind noise". I was ready to replace the door seals as I thought they were worn. I did however just notice that I too have some play in my hinge pins. Thnx for the Tutorial. Hoss

  • @BazookaIke

my problem is the pins on the extended cab doors. Surprisingly, they have gone bad and my doors have been sagging for years. I finally have decided to fix them myself since my mechanic has put it off for about 5 years now.
As for the rattling and wind coming through the doors....IMO that's a 2006 issue. My 2003 Silverado was tight as heck. No rattles, no wind coming through. But when i traded it for my 2006, i noticed all sorts of these issues from the start.

Good job. You can always use a nearby tree & ratchet strap ( or chain block ) to winch the door away if you're alone to do the job.
Only thing I hate is when you do all this work and within a day or two it sags again because the brackets & mounts have been changed a few times before and are now oval.

Follow Randel Pruitt advise below. Careful with the grinder. I was not paying attention and my grinder jumped and ended up nicking the edge of the fender :( ! Also, some of my pins would not come out after repeated hammering, and another site cautioned against hitting the pin so hard that you bend the truck side of the hinge. So, I took a chisel to the top side of the pin. I inserted the chisel between the lip on the pin and the top of the hinge and then and slowly worked around the pin. I was able to work out the pin with just a few taps. Clean out the holes for the bushings and do not force or hammer them in. You might crack them and not even know it. And in a few months they will fall apart. Also, if you don't have a sling to hold the door be smart and get a second person to help with the door. Especially the reinstallation. Otherwise great video ...... Thanks

Wow. Now in Nov 2023 those kits are $40.00/per hinge. $80/door if you do upper and lower. They work way better than the ones that use c-clips but keyristamighty theyre sure proud of em.

I think the hinges should be totally seated on those grooves in the hinge pins. I didn't do that. Seemed like I'd have to force them down by tapping/striking with a hammer. Any advice on this? It seems my door began to sag slighty, just a couple weeks after I installed the new hinge pins and bushings.

just go ahead and buy the doorman kit with the brackets. not worth the time or frustration of not having them if/when your old pins are bonded to the brackets. I had to wait for the auto parts store to open the following day and had to drive there without a driver side door on the car.
