The co-director of this film, Kelly Asbury, passed away this year. I had the good fortune to work with him on his last film, and he was the nicest guy, good humoured and patient in an industry that can occasionally be ruthless and toxic. He'd have appreciated this commentary very much.
I read somewhere that "Initially, Dragon was intended to have a more meaningful role in the original storyline. When Shrek, Donkey, and Puss were changed by Fairy Godmother's magic potion, Dragon transformed as well, into a talking Pegasus, the perfect match to Donkey's transformation into a handsome stallion. She was meant to join the other fairytale creatures as they broke Shrek, Donkey, and Puss out of jail, but she was ultimately cut from the film, the reasoning being that she had too much to say and it would have been too difficult to hide blank blank blank (I had to erase this part so I don't wanna spoil the people who haven't seen the other films). The filmmakers stated, however, that Dragon did still transform proving her to be Donkey's true love."
I think they are trying to suggest that Lillian and Harold are “The Princess and the Frog” and that Harold was a frog when they met and the Fairy Godmother’s spell just turned him BACK into a frog. That’s how I looked at it anyway.
Fun fact: Dragon was supposed to have a bigger role in this movie and turn into a pegasus. I guess they cut it for time, but it would've been cool if it was kept in, especially since one of the few minor problems I had in this movie is, while still pretty funny, Donkey could have contributed a little bit more. Again though, minor.
"What will happen now that the king is a frog?" You have to watch the third one to find out. And watch the fourth one and the P.I.B. spin-off while you're at it.
I recommend watching this movie, skipping Shrek The Third, and going straight to Shrek Forever After which I believe is an underrated film and the perfect conclusion to the “trilogy.”
Shrek the Third isn't the best one by a long shot but it's still entertaining. I think Micheal Palin is great as Merlin. Now as a Canadian I am about to say a heresy; Michael J. Fox has never been one of my favourite actors but I like the other characters so that makes up for it.
i believe the opening montage song helps...it gets you in this comfortable mood that you stay in for the whole film..shrek 2 touches on what made seasons 2-8 of simpsons so good...their first acts would very early on within the first 20 seconds set the mood for the episode and you are just into the show blocking out the world for that 22 minutes when it aired live...it was such a great expeirence...same with shrek 2..it starts so well that it sucks you into its world until the credits....
In this movie the villain is the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming. Shrek and Fiona are on their honeymoon and they're going to meet her parents played by John Cleese and Julie Andrews
I don't know who the giant gingerbread man is supposed to reference, but he's always reminded me of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the original Ghostbusters.
Actually Fiona’s curse was that she would take true love form. She became an oger because sherk is an oger, so when he took the potion it affected Fiona.
Something else I love about Shrek 2 is that (I know the Shrek films aren't primarily comedies and have some legitimate drama/emotional heartstring moments) its one few good sequels to an original comedy.
I seen this movie with my friend in theaters and it's was so f*cking hilarious when Pinocchio's nose didn't grow. I instantly knew what was going on but when Gingy pulled it up and it was a thong, that completely caught me off guard lmfao. My sides were hurting for days from laughing so hard.
i found your channel some time ago and i’ve been binge watching all of your vids 😁 Shrek 2 has to be one of my favorite dreamworks animated films ever!
I honestly dont know which movie I love more: 1 or 2. Both are just amazing movies with a lot of references I didnt even notice til u pointed them out. Shrek is life right here man!
Short answer: Shrek 1 & 2 are equally just as brilliant as each other! Amazing family movies! Real Answer: While I’ve tossed this question in my head many a time, I feel like Shrek 1 is more “classic” and 2 is just a better comedy, way more referencing/ jokes that all work great! I was 6 when S1 came out and to me it holds allot more sentimental value and nostalgia...2 does too...just less, as I was 9 when 2 came out and I feel like again it’s a better comedy. I think 2 has more rewatch ability factor...maybe because it’s a more “fun ride” of a film than 1...but my childhood nostalgia can’t be topped with the first film....so while I feel 1 may be the better “film” .... 2 is slightly more enjoyable a time...for me at least.

Love this movie! It's definitely one of the few sequels that's just as good if not better than the first movie. I also agree, I always wondered what happened to Dragon when Donkey drank the potion
I bought my dad the soundtrack to the first shrek movie for his birthday when I was 8 and I’m pretty sure we jammed out to it on ever road trip for the following 5 years
Grew up with shrek 1 and 2. Basically I believe it was shrek 1 that I watched like on repeat, could’ve been like 10 times each day for all I know. And in the end well, it drove my mum mad and broke the disc in half. I was balling my eyes out, but I remember my grandfather the next day came back with another disc; so yeah that went on a little longer, until shrek 2 - one of the greatest sequels of all time - replaced the crazed mania for me that was shrek 1.
Another solid commentary! Haven't seen the Shrek movies in a while, but I remember rewatching this one more than the first, but I'll have to revisit them all! Also, your comment about being a third wheel hit hard... I prefer to think of myself as a unicycle in those situations...
My favourite Shrek movie! And one of my favourite animated movies. I can also quote this easily and I rewatch the Holding Out For A Hero scene at least once a month. That scene is a cinematic masterpiece! And the soundtrack is one of my favourite movie soundtracks ever. The Frou Frou’s cover of Holding Out For A Hero in the credits is so amazing, I listen to it all the time.
Hey Nic! Fellow Aussie and Dark fan here, love your reactions. I never comment on TH-cam but I really recommend 'One Cut Of The Dead'. It's a Japanese 'zombie' movie (not supposed to be scary), it's SO creative and original. 100% on rotten tomatoes, highly reviewed and Edgar Wright said it's one of his favourite films. Shrek 2 is one of those rare sequels that is just as good, if not better, than the first movie.
Ice Age The Meltdown.
Terminator 2 and Back to the future 2 in my opinion are better then the first movies
