Fantastic footage! (More, please!). 1973 was the year I discovered rallying (aged 14) starting with Dickie Davies' report of the 1973 Scottish Rally on ITV's World of Sport. Started buying Motoring News each week and learned more about rallying which had really hooked me. The '73 RAC Rally showed me how big rallying was back in the Britain of the early 1970's. Timo Makinen (car no. 13) won the '73 RAC from Roger Clark (running at car no.1 as the previous year's winner) but Roger in those days was the one British driver whom you KNEW could take on the world's best drivers and win. We had other great drivers on the scene and you HOPED they might but Roger really was the man to do it back then. Look how long we then had to wait for Colin McRae to come along!
At work and I never believed when my resident told me there was rallying in Sutton Park. We joked that it could t happen again as the posh gits would be moaning about the noise
That was the year I, and my wife actually "marshalled". We really didn't know what we were doing and found it hard work persuading spectators to not stand actually in the road!
