    It doesn't matter if the memories are fake. The feelings are real. All the love Buffy feels for Dawn is real. She made the choice to love and protect Dawn regardless of how Dawn came to be.

      A lot of our memories are unfortunately likely 'fake' in real life. Memory is weird.
      And yeah, no matter what actually happened, it's more symbolic of Buffy's feelings about and pledge to look after Dawn *since she found out she's the Key*

    Buffy has such a ferociously overdeveloped sense of responsibility, and therefore guilt. Remember "I Only Have Eyes For You" (2 x 19)? She blames herself for the emergence of Angelus so intensely that she can't even consider the idea of forgiveness, especially forgiving herself.

    Buffy gave up before Dawn was captured so she could easily convince herself Dawn was dead the second Glory kidnaped her. It's why Willow's pep talk to Buffy started with "Spile was right. Snap out of it." Willow just needed to be inside Buffy's head magically instead of hitting her like Spike doing to attempt to wake her up. Buffy needed the wake up call, though.
    I also love the argument and the way the argument was filmed between Ben and Glory.

    It may have some psychological consequences, but this is the clear illustration of just how much of a hero Buffy is. It never even occurs to her to cut herself a single second's worth of slack. None of the others could possibly ever hold her to a higher standard than she holds herself. She's constantly dealing with things that would crush everyone else, and the worst of it she keeps to herself to spare them.

    She says she gave up on Dawn in that moment and I don't believe that. I think that moment, everything she'd struggled for in her life, everything she lost and sacrificed, this was the moment when it became to much and it wasn't Dawn she was giving up in that moment. It was the Slayer.
    It was her "I can't do this anymore " moment. I'm surprised she lasted this many seasons before hitting this point. She has nothing to be ashamed of. She's both dealt with more than any human alive and done it better than any of them probably could. I wouldn't have survived the Master.

    The Weight Of The World is a brilliant penultimate episode to the stunning Finale which I believe is the best episode of the whole show. Buffy being in a catatonic state allows Willow to enter her mind and bring her back from traumatic stress for the final battle. The news from Giles is another body blow for Buffy that the only way to stop Glory is for Dawn to die as she is The Key. The writers do a great job here showing the pain and stress of depression which Buffy is now acutely feeling. You can feel the tension now building in every way, get ready for episode 100, which has a incredible intro sequence, and utterly brilliant, but heart breaking ending.

    When you're finished with the first run-through of Buffy, you wait a year then watch it again, then you watch it again in a few months after that, but just your favourite episodes, then you watch again with comments turned on (if you have the disk box set like me), then you wait a few years and watch it all again, then after another year you watch other people watching it (vicarious watching is surprisingly almost as good as watching for the first time yourself). Then who knows? I'm thinking of watching Buffy in different languages. Buffy, elle est très forte, non ?

    It always bothered me that Buffy focuses on the memory of baby Dawn's arrival. I wanted to scream at her "But that didn't actually happen!" But the important part is what Little Buffy says: "I could take care of her." That's the feeling she's fixed on and can't get past, so it doesn't matter how it happened.

    So you finally got up to the part that spawned all the "Ben is Glory" jokes in the comments over the past few weeks, and it seems you liked it immensely.
    One thing about this show: _Buffy_ and _Angel_ never replaced an actor. They've even been able to bring back actors for minor parts, or for a single scene, like Buffy's father here or Amy in Season Four's _Something Blue._ The only exception I can think of is the actress playing a young Buffy, but Buffy is younger here than in Season One's _Killed by Death,_ so it makes sense.
    Sometimes, a single actor portrayed more than one character. The only one we've seen, I think, is the demon in the LA hell dimension (S3x01) and Doyle's wife's boyfriend (Angel S1), and there are a couple more we have yet to be introduced to. But we've never had to familiarize ourselves with a new actor playing someone else's role.

    What kills me about the memory is how the monks ever installed from the moment Dawn entered Buffy’s life that it was her role to protect her.

    • @mb7626
      @mb7626 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sort of think the memory installation that the monks did had to be more 'hands off' than that. Like there's no way they could flesh it out with all those details by doing it all deliberately, knowing how many things they'd have to sort out, so I think probably the way the spell worked was to basically leave it up to the universe to conjure or fill in all those details for them, which in a way means that Buffy's responses here were probably how she would have really acted, or at least a reasonable facsimile of that. But it's hard to say, they're obviously not clear about how the spell worked. I just think that no human could be capable of working out all those details and making them match in a way that was consistent and convincing, so the only way for the spell to work would be for them to leave it up to some intelligence outside of themselves, basically like conjuring a new past as if it were like an alternate universe where you change one factor, and then everything else plays out organically from that one change by itself.

    • @MarkusR144
      @MarkusR144 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mb7626 It's not even just the memories. You can't just change memories alone and then have a whole new human in the house. Dawn would have to have a birth certificate and all documents needed to attend public school, grades and reports from previous years in school, etc. Joyce's taxes would be done differently and there would be copies of hundreds if not thousands of documents in government archives that mention Dawn, records of doctor visits, photos of Dawn in yearbooks from LA, etc. All that stuff needs to be created or changed including all copies.
      If you don't have all that it wouldn't take long for something to pop up that would get Dawn taken away since it would appear that they just kidnapped her from somewhere, which would screw up the monks plan. If the monks had to be specific and "hands on" with everything, they could never pull all that off. The details have to be "filled in by nature" to make it work.

    I know, best season ever, right? The next episode is pretty spectacular, totally worth the wait. I really dig season 6, although the fanbase is pretty split on it, and season 7 has a fantastic final episode.
    And more important than anything, you can rewatch different episodes or the whole damn thing whenever the fuck you want and no Buffy fan will give you any shit at all for it, we do the same thing. Lately I'm kind of addicted to watching people watch it, that works, too. You can go away or stay here for as long as you like, it's a really understanding show that way. That likes to make you and everyone else cry a bunch.

  • @67Daidalos

    Sofie, you don't have to worry.. Once Buffy and Angel both would be over, you'll do exactly the same thing we all did... You'll gonna watch them again, and again, and probably also follow other reactors who will discover it.
    And in between rewatches, you still can try some other shows that were heavily influenced by Buffy/Angel (and even have some Buffy/Angel actors) like Tru Calling, Veronica Mars, Dead Like Me (seriously, this last one, I don't think anyone has yet reacted to it, maybe you could be the first)...
    Or if you want to discover more ancient shows, I can only suggest you Quantum Leap as I heard they're going to release a (kind of) sequel, it would be nice to discover the original first.

    Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap of 'The Weight Of The World'. May contain spoilers:
    Buffy’s out of commission as she’s gone into a catatonic state. With the loss of their leader and time running out to rescue Dawn, Willow immediately takes the initiative to take command of the Gang, as she often does when Buffy is AWOL. Willow gives out orders to everyone, already having come up with a plan to save Dawn and to stop Glory in one fell swoop, showing she’s competent at leadership. At taking charge and executing a procedure while Buffy is absent. This is one of the reasons why I believe Willow to be an INTP in the Myers-Briggs 16 personality types system. INTP leaders often lead or manage out of necessity more than anything else. They will not take leadership unless they have to. And I can absolutely attest to that as I am an INTP myself. Whether Willow is one also is obviously debatable but I do believe so - not just because of this personality trait but a few other personality traits of hers too - as well as her being exceedingly academically and intuitively intelligent She observes things other characters do not and as such, has attention-to-detail where it counts. What I’ve noticed is in situations like this in the show,… as soon as Willow takes leadership, the Gang follow her lead instinctively just as they do with Buffy. But there is a HUGE difference between the two that many fans on here have pointed out. Buffy has no choice but to do it. Willow does. She chooses to do it. Thus, Willow always chooses to be the leader - but only in the absence of Buffy, And this is a very important detail to remember going into the start of Season 6 when Willow takes lead indefinitely.

    • @faithvictoria9014
      @faithvictoria9014 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its funny how Willow actually seems pretty good at taking charge and giving orders but as soon as Buffy comes back in season 6, she just steps aside and happily assumes Buffy can solve everything and does not contribute at all. Its like she only sees herself as powerful without Buffy around.

    The past doesn't exist anymore. Only the present. So what is the difference between their real memories and all their fake memories of Dawn. Both the real and fake memories are just data stored in their heads about something that doesn't exist anymore either way. Dawn is real now. If you can't tell the difference between the fake memories and when the real memories started then there should be no difference. There's nothing about their relationship that isn't real except for some of their memories.

She knows Ben is a good person and helps others and it isn't his fault he's stuck with Glory, so Buffy really wouldn't be able to kill Ben and stay the same person she is. I just noticed a mistake. At the beginning of the episode, when Spike smacked Buffy, his chip activated. According to previous episodes, it shouldn't be able to do that with regards to Buffy.

      His chip definitely does activate when he hurts Buffy, like all humans.

      It didn’t work on Buffy past season 6 since Willow's resurrection of Buffy altered her molecular structure and confused the chip.

      @@jeremiah3274Thanks for the reminder. I must have had my seasons mixed up at the time.
