    • @ThatGFFAN
      @ThatGFFAN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +456

      My personal guess is that the zodiac had no real use to begin with. This just proves that fact. The popularity of it by the fans made them add it in. Though I think that they did so only with the idea that it would never be useful. It is kinda funny to think about...this thing we all have theorized for so long about was just a last minute edition that no one thought would be important.

    • @breadeater1194
      @breadeater1194 4 ปีที่แล้ว +227

      I definitely saw the zodiac's use (or lack thereof) in the finale as a sort of statement that the relationships between the characters were more important than the symbols and the conspiracies.
      With this behind the scenes look, it can kind of come off as a commentary on the difference between fan theories/expectations and Alex Hirsch's intentions.

      It kinda is a sign of how Alex thought the show would be back then. Gravity Falls came out around the time fandoms became a bigger thing, so they picked up on GF real fast. I think I remember Alex saying somewhere that he went into the show believing that it would barely make its first season and probably get cancelled by Disney early on (not exactly what he said, but similar to it). The fandom was a huge part in the show's early on success and what got it to season 2. Alex literally almost quit on the show given season 1 broke him from how much he had to work on it. The support he got from the fandom really helped him push through and get the story done.

    I do appreciate the way they managed to retroactively make the other characters fit their corresponding symbols on the Zodiac. Like how with Pacifica, initially it seemed to just be a coincidence - oh she happens to be wearing a llama jumper right now, I guess that's me - but then after the show's finished, and they go back to do Lost Legends, we get a flashback scene of little kiddy Pacifica and she has a llama toy, so it's like she's always been associated with that somehow. Nicely done, guys.

    I always thought a better use of the Zodiac would have been to make it a red herring in the form of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    Like, have Ford think it's the big "Care Bear Stare" finisher, only for Bill to come into the room and ask what the hell they're doing. "Oh, ha ha ha, that wasn't supposed to signify my greatest enemies. That's a list of my greatest VICTIMS!" Then he does the drape thing.
    The only reason why those specific people are on the wheel is because they were the people there at the time. It certainly would have made it feel less like a waste of time.

    It's a good idea to know where your show starts, middles, and ends. It's also good if you have a general theme/lore of the show set up before diving straight into it. All that said, it is pretty funny that something that became the centers of theories on the Internet was devised because, "Oh I'm running late, we'll think of something LOL" It also shows that you don't have to have EVERYTHING always figured out (it helps) and that you can add a few things along the way as long as you do it right, which I think Hirsch did.

    • @dethhollow
      @dethhollow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The more I write, the more I realize that there's way more power in just having a hazy outline, because what really matters is how things go along moment-to-moment. The more you plan ahead of time, the more you now have to twist and distort your characters as the story evolves and things change just to fit things into your original intention. Nothing's more valuable than being able to stay flexible and feel things out as you go.
      Sure, planning helps. But never just have an idea and be strictly dedicated to getting to it no matter what, right? Otherwise, you'll just struggle to justify where things go when it counts instead of finding a path to the destination that feels natural for your characters.

    • @HyLion
      @HyLion 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dethhollow This is already exemplified by Gravity Falls itself. The plan for Weirdmaggedon was, at first, that Bill would make a deal with Mabel directly, but by the time they got to that part, they figured Mabel had already faced Bill too many times and wouldn't be that stupid at this point in the plot, so they changed it to Bill possessing Blendin to do the deal instead

    Yeah, that kinda makes sense. I always thought wendy being the ice bag was a bit of a stretch.
    That's not to say it's bad though. While it feels very 'chicken before the egg' - like, that's just how ideas happen sometimes. And it didn't take away from the finale, so it's all good.

  • @LuxsorFlare
    @LuxsorFlare 4 ปีที่แล้ว +215

    You know this makes a lot of sense considering how the wheel was used in the show. In the finale the wheel was totally pointless, since they weren't able to use it to defeat bill and they ended up using a different way. I do prefer the way they did it, erasing bill from stan's mind was far more clever and heroic than a deus ex machina (tho the sacrifice was voided by stan getting his memories immediately but thats a whole other can of worms). But it makes me wonder why they even put the wheel in the show at all and have everyone theorize about it when it did nothing. Now that I know that the wheel had no purpose from the start, im guessing they forgot about it until the finale and just threw something together.
    Still kinda disappointed though. I would've preferred if they didn't want the wheel to be integral to the story, to maybe have it serve a more symbolic role instead. Like perhaps the wheel could've been all the people bill made deals/manipulated directly or indirectly in some in order to lead to his arrival. This actually applies to most of the people represented on the wheel. Ford, dipper and gideon made direct deals with bill. Mable and Blendin was manipulated by bill (if we went with the old idea that the ice bag represented Blendin). Mcgucket and Stan never interacted with Bill however they bothed worked on the portal which was important to Bill's arrival and their decision to do so was influenced by Ford who was influenced by Bill. Just an idea.

    • @RandomGuy-ll9uz
      @RandomGuy-ll9uz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Even though the wheel did nothing I like how the charscters had to try multiple different things and were forced to improvise in the end to beat Bill. I especially like how Ford had prepared a contingency plan in the form of the quantum destabilizer which lends credence to the idea of Ford being an intelligent guy who knows to prepare for the worst.

    • @breadeater1194
      @breadeater1194 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I think there's a huge symbolic significance to the fact that Bill identifies everyone according to which symbol they correspond to, and they beat him, not by using his zodiac, but by having two characters switch symbols (Stan puts on a six fingered glove, Ford puts on the fez), and Bill not being able to tell them apart.

    • @dethhollow
      @dethhollow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hard disagree. I really like that it came up by the end, even though it was never meant to be anything it got a lot of fan theories going. So now they just look doubly clever, right? Once for foreshadowing something that the fans can pick up on that's (retroactively) important to the lore, and again for writing in a perfectly functional deus ex machina just to ignore it and do a more interesting solution that still makes logical sense.
      It doesn't matter that the wheel is useless, what ultimately matters is that people are able to speculate about it while watching and feel rewarded for predicting either that gimmick OR the other big way to solve the problem.

    The ancient ten house zodiac is pre Roman, compared to our twelve house version. That's why Octo is 10th instead of 8th and Dece is 12th instead of 10th. Ice, in esoteric symbolism, represents Isis or as we know her, the constellation Virgo. Mabel is a shooting star and and entire episode was dedicated to her becoming serious aka Sirius the dog star in Orion, but they didn't give her a bow and arrow, probably because Disney standards or grappling hooks are cooler. Stan's fez is a Freemason sign of Venus iirc. Dipper is probably also a constellation resonator or representative, but we'd need some sort of evidence to back that up, like a hat with a star on it, or a golden child style birthmark. It was always a prophecy and a zodiac, but Hirsch can technically say it was pieced together as they went because that's the outlining method they used. They're only really allowed to say the masonic secrets in fiction or fraternally protected environments, so he can't come out and say the exact truth or he'd hear about it from his lodge. We can talk about it though, because it just makes us seem crazy...

    • @sylph8005
      @sylph8005 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Idk if Alex Hirsch or other GF creators are actually Freemasons but I guess it's not impossible. It's a good way to network in industries and a cypher nerd like Hirsch would want to get involved in something like that. I think Hirsch would have a special ring if he was though, and that might actually be something the Masons publicize since they're not really secret on membership and stuff. He could also probably make references like this without being a Mason though, a lot of the info is out there. I still don't think it's quite as in-depth as you're saying, or at least not on this specific bit (certainly other parts of the show's mythos). It's worth mentioning that the henchmaniac Kryptos is the Freemason symbol and Dipper's real name is Mason, which is revealed in Journal 3 and Ford positively references the society when he learns that. There's also secret society stuff in the Book of Bill but it's much more parody. Of course that's not to mention the Society of the Blind Eye.

    But at least to me the "Wendy is the ice bag because she's cOoL" felt a bit weird compared to the ides that the ice bag in Time Traveller's Pig was actually such a big turning point for Dipper's relationship with her, and for both their characters as a whole. Somewhat similar to how Cap & Iron Man diverge paths in Civil War; the "diverging" of paths between Wendy and Dipper as a result of the incident in that episode bring about a whole host of plot points and storyline that are explored throughout the rest of the show; the ups and downs of Wendy & Dipper's friendship, Dipper & Robbie fighting over Wendy, the whole Robbie/Tambry thing. And all of this leads to the end of the show, where Wendy and Dipper are (currently) just friends, but care so much for each other, having enjoying each other's company on the various adventures they've been throigh together, especially the final battle against Bill. Though I know that Alex says they didn't reslly have a meaning being the ice bag, and yes the "Pacifica = Llama" was definitely forced, from the first time I watched the episode where the zodiac is revealed I believed that Wendy as the ice bag is actually symbolic of a lot more. But thats just my interpretation

    That explains why it has the book on it without representing the author.

    So that's why it didn't really have a big role in the story... It was never meant to be in the story in the first place! I just thought it was a failed Chekhov's gun.

    Since it wasn't planned i wonder if in case it was some people on it would change like Robbie for example, he feels like the least relevant out of all of them, having just season 1 it makes sense for him to be there but with season 2 he loses all relevance to the plot, like i feel that overall Blendin would make more sense on the wheel than Robbie

    To be honest I STILL thought the 6 fingered hand was a reference to Fringe all the way up until this second. It is a FANTASTIC paranormal show so it just made sense that Alex would be inspired by it. And now I find out he's not even watched it.
    At least the Fringe references in the MLP Comics are unmistakable. But for shows like Gravity Falls, Owl House, Amphibia, where there's this sense of conectivity, like, Fringe references would make so much damn sense to include. Why? Well... That's kind of a spoiler. You should just go out and watch Fringe. It's in the same genre as Gravity Falls if you ask me, but live action, and aimed just at adults.
