    I started out with one female guppy. I called her big mama because she was huge. She was obviously pregnant. 10 years later she is long gone, but my tank is littered with her great great great great grandchildren. Once I introduced male endlers into the population, ive gotten some of the most amazing looking livebearers. Love guppies. Love platys.

      Me too, love platys…never kept guppies though. I got calico platys and they are so beautiful and such lovely natured fish.

    Just started with Platy's. I love them. Lot of fish seem half asleep, but these are playful and colourful, constantly eating micro food. They chase each other, bit naughty nudge each other, or swim around in pairs, sometimes they do shoal. And at night they rest by floating around sleepy, that's cute.

      Started with 3, now 6 plus 3 babies. I didn't want any fish that looked bored or trapped.

    The Platy♥️ so I find it interesting that these are easier in your opinion than a guppy... I've never really kept Platies. I did have a couple of swordtails as a kid though.. And all the different colors... win win!!

    I need to keep some Platies again. They were my favourite in the beginning. I prefer them over the guppy also because they keep their color down the line for much longer than the guppy who quickly returns to a "wild form".

    Great stuff Blake. I keep mine in a pond all year round, where it gets to about 10C in winter, and they don't mind it at all. You didn't mention that they are a pretty good algae eater. I throw some plants in the pond, from an unbalanced tank I have, and they are clean in a day. I also saw a flyer in my LFS the other day saying Frogbit is banned now. Don't remember if it was WA or all Aust.

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gday Boges, quite right a lot of them do enjoy munching on some algaes, I should have promoted that. I think here in victoria it gets too cold for frogbit to survive but I am fairly sure it is banned in warmer states like NSW.

    In my experience, platys, as well as the other common live bearers, need a pH over 7.0 (neutral) for the best long term health. I always felt this was probably due to the greater mineral drain on their bodies as the result of their breeding habits (live fish as opposed to small eggs). But I have no proof. In New York, with soft acid water, I always got a slow wasting effect unless I added calcium to the water, whereas in Chicago, with a tap water pH of 7.4 - 7.8, I never had a problem.

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah id agree with that. Variatus can handle cooler temps and lower ph better than southern, hence the 6.8 minimum suggested. I always sit a big piece of limestone in the back corner of tanks regardless to buffer things up for them

  • @ryanmates1386
    @ryanmates1386 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah, I tried taking out my pregnant guppy, but when I did she didn't give birth. So I put it back into the original tank, and the next day I had 5 babies. The next day, the guppy had 23 more babies and now they are all living happily. :)

    Hey Blake, my platy is eventually getting to the stage of getting a fully see through tail with a little bit of black from the original colour. Is this meant to happen? Thanks

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is a bit unusual, if the discolouration is only to the tail I wouldnt be too concerned, platys can change colour as they grow, but if the platy is totally faded and losing colour everywhere it could be a sign of poor health of illness.
