- In this short video, discover who is eating the mangrove leaves at Weedon Island Preserve. 🦀 You’ll learn where you can look and how to spot them when you are out and about at the Preserve.
Aratus pisonii, the Mangrove tree crab, is a common creature spotted at Weedon Island Preserve. Just about anywhere there are mangrove trees, there are mangrove tree crabs. These crabs provide a very important service in the intertidal zone along the estuary, assisting in the breakdown of mangrove leaves that contribute to soil organic matter.
Come out and visit the Preserve; bring your friends, your family, and your “crabby eyes”!
