I have family who are artists who would fit right in with this place so I get it even though it is not my bag. Thanks for taking the time to detail and present this region in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding. You again have captured the essence of what is transpiring here. @@Oldnoitall Yeah, my brother worked in the geothermal power generating plants there, retired after 32 years. He said before he retired, that IF they were SMART they would sluice off the spent water that was being injected BACK into the ground, ( to prevent ground water depletion, Mexicali, Mex., just over the border has geothermal plants too, but they vent spent steam to the atmosphere, and thats why some buildings have cracked foundations) and take it out of the water. There was/is an ABANDONED mini site where they were getting the lithium, but funding fell through. Elon Musky was here looking into that a year or so ago.
A couple of tidbits to add. There is a flooded salt mine in the middle of the Salton Sea, which makes the alkalinity off the charts high. The west shore (where Salton City is) stinks so bad from algae blooms and fishkills that you can't really get close to the water without gagging...Part of the toxicity beyond the nitrates coming out of the fields (which has gotten somewhat under control) was the fact that the New River flowed in reverse out of Mexicali into the Salton Sea, and until recently without any level of sewage treatment...The keystone to the San Andreas Fault is at the lower end of the Salton, where all the geothermal pools are located. If that thing pops loose, that's where The Big One starts...Slab City nearby is where you really get the Black Rock City vibe...
The California Natural Resources Agency is currently working on the largest restoration project for the Salton Sea. They have a ten-year plan in place, and many people are eagerly anticipating its completion.
Im 70 and I recall the last time i visited was with my kids in 1997. It smelled bad, it was hot and very humid. It sounds as though it would make a good super fund clean-up area.
You know how the Salton Sea area is going to change once they (or IF they) start pulling the lithium from under the lake and ground? There will be lots of earthquakes! At least that's my prediction. The area is full of fault lines. I live not too far away near Anza in Riverside County, and it will most likely affect us here as well. In fact it may have a profound effect on the entire SoCal area. We'll see, I suppose. Thanks, Joe and Nicole. Love watching your adventures and learning things, especially when it comes to off-the-beaten-path areas and towns. Stay safe, and stay cool!
I found it interesting that the downtown was covered by a roof...and then I realized it had to be because of the heat and sun. Very interesting! And I loved all the art at Bombay Beach.
I became interested in Salton some years ago and read anything I could find about it online. I'll never be able to visit it but your video makes me feel as if I was there. Thank you for the amazing work you do!
This, Bombay Beach, IS one of the most attractive towns I´ve seen in California that matches Slab Town. People can "move" to another "home" without restrictions. No homeless people here. Kids grow up under conditions prevalent in the near future, so they will be a step or two ahead of the blind that don´t foresee what is coming to them all. Thanks for showing the alternative type of community that favors freedom from toxic media. Enjoyed the Drive-in where viewers need not bring an auto, only snacks, drinks and their imagination to enjoy their own creations. Beats Hollywood by ages. Great video Joe&Nic!
Don’t know how I came across this video, but I’m glad I did. I loved every second of your presentation. Both you guys were amazing. Thank you. Best wishes for you both and hope they’ll be more videos.
The billboard of Bombay Beach is awesome! I want it! LOL. What creative artwork! Wow! The Church was awesome, too! The artwork was a step beyond Slab City. There was so much attention to detail in this artwork! I also loved that Drive-in theater! Yea, that reminded me of Mad Max for sure! Love seeing those fences\walls going up. No politics involved, just a homeowners perspective. LOL, Joey is becoming an Historian, Architect, Statistician, Tour Guide and More! 🙂 Love it! The American poverty numbers WILL rise in all categories over the next 10 years, unfortunately. Keep doing what you guys do! We love Nicole when she makes her Cameos. Thanks Joe for another great video!
When i was a wee lad in Edinburgh and asked my Mum for some money, she would say who do you think i am Andrew Carnegie, Andrew was a Scot who made his money in Steel away back in time, and he believed in giving it away before he died, so Libraries was one of his ways to spend his money. Dunfermline in Scotland was well looked after as he was born there ,also other places in Bonnie Scotland.
This is by far the most interesting place I've seen you visit. I love the art exhibits, obviously created out of a sense of satire, poking fun at the corporate and municipal failures of that area. If in the future they do start mining lithium there, another environmental disaster will be in the making. Love your videos and all the off-the-beaten-path places you explore. It would be great if you could find people to explain what living in these places is like. It would give us an oral history as well as the visual one you provide.
Visiting my grandparents during the summer months in the 1960's the area of Imperial Beach, San Diego (not far from Tijuana Mexico/border? had such a terrible smell, but no one knew exactly where the fishy stench was coming from and why, I was child back then, but I hated visiting San Diego area where my relatives reside because of the odor... Now I understand what happened, thanks to this video by Joe explaining the history... many thanks to a mystery solved.
In 1973 my husband and I plus several of our friends went camping at Salton Sea (slept in our cars) the next morning we had a wonderful breakfast at a golf course club house restaurant. It was kind of fancy but we must have looked awful having slept in our cars, but nobody said anything negative to us. After we ate we went swimming. I guess we were there right before it all went down hill. I just have nice memories of the place.
Native Californian here. If you are travel north of San Diego I’d love to see you go to the small town of Pixley. It’s a rural farming town, I also suggested Quincy. It’s 3 hours north of Sacramento. Very beautiful but super remote.
Creativity at it's best! I have never been there but in 1971 we took a family vacation in the desert not far from there to visit family and in that area they were known for only 6 days of rain per year. But while we were there it rained 4 days in a row!
I regularly drive there from the Lake Elsinore area. I really enjoy taking a cruise around the lake. Usually going on the Bombay side 1st, and the Salton City side 2nd. Sometimes I might take the I-10 to get there, other times I take the CA-78 to get there. Goes from the mountains right down to below sea level desert.
Hi, just started your latest video. I love your videos. I must say though, Lithium & electric cars are SO bad for the environment. You should look into it. There's no safe way to dispose of those expensive car batteries. The vehicles weigh significantly more than gas powered vehicles. (Think car crashes, parking garages not built for the increased weight. More damage, injury etc.) They catch fire very easily & are difficult to put out. I could go on... I love what you're doing showing us the country, but had to speak up regarding the electric car push. Thanks.😊
Thank you both so much for another exciting road trip video!! Appreciate it somuch. We're both getting over mild colds here so this makes us feel better as you travel & educate us all!! 😊
This is the first video I have watched on your channel. I found it very interesting. As a child I remember seeing one of those amphibious cars on the lake. I am impressed by your kindness. Some of what you filmed shows abject poverty but you are never condescending.
Very interesting video J & N. I'd never heard of the Salton Sea. Thx for the back history. Kind of creepy now. That appetizer... yum! Always enjoy it when I have time to listen to one of your vlogs.
Love this out- of -the- way -off- the- charts travelog, opening up the strange, the wacky and wonderfully expressive alternative living. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and sharing the treasures of your travels!
Inland California is a wild place. Most people picture San Diego and LA when they think of California, but a whooooole lot of the state is a very distinct kind of seedy.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip I grew up in the geographic area that was the inspiration for David Lynch's works like Twin Peaks, but honestly I always got a much more powerful Lynch vibe from inland California.
I lived in Borrego Springs, CA for 4 years before residing in San Diego. Salton Sea is officially a ghost town. I used to go there and photograph. The water is terrible and I do not recommend swimming in it as there has been dead fish due to toxins in the water. In the summer I remember the smell would travel to Borrego and would stick for about 3 months long! It didnt help that we would get to 120 and above temperatures either. Its nothing exciting just another part of CA going down hill unfortunately.
Super show again Joe! Bombay Beach was really Kool! Loved the locked gate with two smashed toilets ? All the different styles of multi coloured TV’s looking back at the street was very creative! Your video really debunks people pouring illegally into the USA especially where there was no Fence/Wall! My Favourite though was the Drive In with 1972-73 Ford Maverick in the “Back Row”! It sounded like you had a bit of a chest cold at the beginning of the video? If so hope you’re feeling better! Thank you again for everything that you do ! Drive safe and take care! See you next week!
It's eerie when you drive through. Good news is they found a large deposit of lithium recently. To me anywhere in that valley is challenging do to heat. Palm Springs is near, so it's not as dead as the video seems. But the Saltin Sea area is. They practiced dropping the nuclear bomb here before droping it on Japan. At first they couldn't even hit the lake, lol.
Gracias for the tour, you certainly capture all the in's and out's of this travel. The town of Bombay is sure an interesting place, so much art. Boy that meal, cucumber chalupas really look good I'm going to have to try that. Gracias again for a well presented tour.
We used to have a pig roast every year just west of Salton City on BLM land with my coworkers from San Diego in the early 2000s. I remember when they put those new houses in. Crazy.
No it is _not_ great weather near Salton Sea. Try an average of 110 all Summer long and 125 F is not unheard of. I've been there and it was 123 in the shade. Starts getting hot in March and April. Slab City empties out by the end of April for the mobile folks.
Imperial County is a corner of California most people don't know exists. El Centro is the winter home for The Blue Angels. You missed Calipatria, California, the home to the world's tallest flag pole: 184' tall. Town elevation is -184'.
When I lived at the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley, we were 200 feet below sea level. I used to say, hottest desert in the world, 200 feet below sea level, and 3 feet above hell.
People in the desert always create desert art that’s what that is it’s beautiful it sculptures and found objects put in strange positions. I always love that about the desert. If I lived in the desert, I would do that too.
I lived near there and worked as a desert tour guide. The desert draws you in and there is a greater sense of freedom there than most places in the U.S. Live and let live. Very true what you say about some people being economic trapped. Brutally hot in the summer and early fall. Beautiful in the winter and spring.
Eighty five percent of our winter vegetables are grown in the Yuma/Imperial Valley area. The water district that serves this area is one of the most poltiically charged special districts in the state (a lot of money). For the interested, Cadillac Desert is a must read. California water districts often have their own law enforcement agencies because of water politics. Solar farms are expanding. However, they are causing massive amounts of birds to die. The Salton Sea is an attraction to migratory birds.
Hi Joe, hi Nic! I don't know if you've ever heard of Trona. It's also a small desert town, but people living there make a good living. You might want to check it while you're here.
Hi from England, love your channel, great insight into the other side of America, I think you would love it over here with our 1000 year old castles and 800 year old pubs
I’ve driven past this area so many times on my way down to the border to AZ. Never really stopped to take a look at it the area. Thank you for the video!
Like he said the salton sea is below sea level. There are 2 rivers coming out of the sewers of mexicali and flows down to the salton sea "the new river" google it. Basically the salton sea is a big toilet bowl. All the fishes died and its contaminated with sewer water and chemicals from all the pesticide. The farms dont use the new river water.
Thank you for taking me to a part of the country I would never have gotten to. Loved the Bombay Beach drive - in , that was a unique area and the Mexican hot dog looked yummy. Sincerely, Jim Thornton
Stumbled on your channel very well done I like how methodical you are statistics and visual neighborhoods downtown and businesses.. mark my words 20 years from now all those communities Will be cities
Thanks for sharing. I have heard the air around the Salton sea is just as poisonous as the water now, but these people are thriving there. Have a great day and safe travels
I remember my friends who lived close to Palm Springs in Cathedral City told me that the worst time of the year is August when the storms blow in from Arizona and it gets humid and the Salton Sea starts to smell There was a development supposed to go in the other side of Coachella towards the lake with a nice gated community but so far that hasn't happened There's a Indian casino not far away from the southern side of the lake, maybe some people work there The ElCento area is a farming area. They have a department store , I used to know a couple that lived there. There's nicer areas there with larger homes
I’ve been all over the country, every state, and seen some strange places but the saltan sea area and Bombay beach may be the strangest place I’ve ever been too. Really cool places and centrilia Pennsylvania is another strange and cool place to visit
Yep, and just how toxic is that to the environment. But wait, people will not believe this. Instead they believe the lies that the fossil fuel is more toxic to the environment. We live in a world full of 🧟♂️ zombies.
This video is great! I live in San Felipe . 3 hrs south of the borde from calexico . I’ve driven that salton sea area a bunch ! It’s like another world! Your video is great!
I hope you go to some of the nice communities in the southwest. It's been a lot of dreary nastiness for a long time. Love your channel. For those who live a long way off from the lower 48 it's alarming to see that it's just kind of a deserted relic.
We live nearby and pass up and down hwy 86 a lot. California has already put a tax on the lithium to do dust mitigation and restoration for the sea. El Centro is a very nice desert city... Much richer than Yuma. People are going to be surprised at what happens here next.
One of your best reports! This place seems out-of-time. It would have been a great place for an "Ed Wood" movie. Imagine, a monster emerges from the Salton Sea and travels through the ag canals. The monster "Toxicola" is made of water so nothing can kill it. After it has had its fill, the trouble subsides. But, it is still there. How's that for a plot! Great for the 1950s.

A couple of tidbits to add. There is a flooded salt mine in the middle of the Salton Sea, which makes the alkalinity off the charts high. They have been thinking about restoration but haven’t decide yet.
Action will speak louder than words as those of us living along the shores of the lake have heard this for decades. I remain cautiously hopeful.
They've been saying that since the 80's. They have wasted billions of dollars.

❤😊 FUN VID !!! THANX A BUNCH , I HAVENT BEEN THERE IN OVER 50yrs. STAY SAFE !!! 😊
I would think the naval station at el Centro would be a big employer. Home of the blue angels.
What these dwellers did do their town is amazing. Especially the drive in...very cool.
Only a redhead would argue about “ wall vs. fence”😅
Crazy.
Very interesting Joe you've done your research . Great job You Guys.
I visited Calipatria in my Slab City video, and yes, I stopped and looked at the flagpole in it.
I stand corrected. I just watched that episode.
When I lived at the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley, we were 200 feet below sea level. I used to say, hottest desert in the world, 200 feet below sea level, and 3 feet above hell.
Thanks for the cool road trips! I dislike the desert in general, but those blue skies over Salton City are to die for ❤❤
Very interesting area, especially those first few communities
People in the desert always create desert art that’s what that is it’s beautiful it sculptures and found objects put in strange positions. I always love that about the desert. If I lived in the desert, I would do that too.
I love your videos. They are so informative and entertaining. Thanks so much from Boxford, Ma.
Thank you!
WTF! ~$70 w/tip for a hot dog, a burger, and a so-so appetizer with two drinks in El Centro!!! I'll stick with In-N-Out, TYVM.
Depressing. I understand if somebody there is trapped- economically unable to leave. But why would you choose to live there?
I lived near there and worked as a desert tour guide. The desert draws you in and there is a greater sense of freedom there than most places in the U.S. Live and let live. Very true what you say about some people being economic trapped. Brutally hot in the summer and early fall. Beautiful in the winter and spring.
It is very calm here in imperial valley...
Very cool, as always! Thanks, Joe :)
Such a magical mysterious place, thank you so much
All you need for time travel, a comfortable chair and a beer holder.
Dust storms are bad for your lungs 🫁 I read .wear a mask on dusty days.
It will happen, hopefully beginning in about a year. :)
WOW just wow people actually live in that place Amazing
Thanks for uploading such an awesome video 🎉
I’ve driven past this area so many times on my way down to the border to AZ. Never really stopped to take a look at it the area. Thank you for the video!
Another interesting ride along
This place along with Slab City is on my bucket list!
I like your meal in the end of the video . I wish I was there . God Bless America .
Exactly and the Alamo River is the other one. The 2 most polluted rivers in this nation. What a shame..!
Thank you for taking me to a part of the country I would never have gotten to. Loved the Bombay Beach drive - in , that was a unique area and the Mexican hot dog looked yummy. Sincerely, Jim Thornton
Thanks, Jim!
Wow I been going there for years when I was young to older and I loved swimming and I enjoyed my memories there
Stumbled on your channel very well done I like how methodical you are statistics and visual neighborhoods downtown and businesses.. mark my words 20 years from now all those communities Will be cities
8 dollars and .25 cents for a small glass of beer? FCK THAT!
Thanks for sharing. I have heard the air around the Salton sea is just as poisonous as the water now, but these people are thriving there. Have a great day and safe travels
That's the 2nd poorest county I've ever seen. Another relaxing and satisfying video. Thanks!😊❤
I remember my friends who lived close to Palm Springs in Cathedral City told me that the worst time of the year is August when the storms blow in from Arizona and it gets humid and the Salton Sea starts to smell
There was a development supposed to go in the other side of Coachella towards the lake with a nice gated community but so far that hasn't happened
There's a Indian casino not far away from the southern side of the lake, maybe some people work there
The ElCento area is a farming area. They have a department store , I used to know a couple that lived there. There's nicer areas there with larger homes
It's really amazing how well maintained the properties are.
More videos with Nicola. Love seeing restaurants and hotels in the different areas you visit.
I’ve been all over the country, every state, and seen some strange places but the saltan sea area and Bombay beach may be the strangest place I’ve ever been too. Really cool places and centrilia Pennsylvania is another strange and cool place to visit
The Ski Inn is a cool place! I went once and their burgers looked amazing!
The process that it takes. To build those batteries is unreal 😳. Seen a video from another country.
Yep, and just how toxic is that to the environment. But wait, people will not believe this. Instead they believe the lies that the fossil fuel is more toxic to the environment. We live in a world full of 🧟♂️ zombies.
21:50 Bombay Beach Drive-in…right on bottom sign I seen a Ford Maverick is reminded me have one at 1979…😄
This video is great! I live in San Felipe . 3 hrs south of the borde from calexico . I’ve driven that salton sea area a bunch ! It’s like another world! Your video is great!
Thank you! I love it there. :)
But you have to be able to cope with some hot summers.
Great for the 1950s.
great video, smart commentary, good stuff👏
Much appreciated!
