    Beginner here: I've built shoes but not boots. From what I can see it goes; shank cover, outsole, pins and heel. There is no mid-sole? And the pins show in the finished boot?BTW, you make good, no-nonsense, informative videos...watched them all at least once.

      Is there a mid-sole on most boots? My other question has been answered; the pins do show in the finished boot. Is there a reason to install a mid-sole? - as in dress shoes?

      +Jay Shriver there is usually not a midsole or slip so in boots… reasons for adding them generally have to do with giving the boot more height, giving the boot a different look, or simply just for longer wear. Hope this helps.

      Thanks. It does help. I keep thinking it's complicated - it's time consuming but not as complicated as shoes. I'll still tape the last and make patterns, even though Eugene Pik tells me that's just for shoe making. If you're not familiar with Eugene's work, check out "Leathercraft - dragon tooling" on You-Tube.
      Thanks for getting back to me.

    But how'd ya get the shape to start with ?
    I see myself going backwards as ill be putting a curve on first and sanding flat layer by layer.
    Only making one pair and love your explanation of what you do

    • @eradawnboots

      The shape is formed mostly be the curvature of the last/mold, but as I state in the video, we developed our sole/shank area curve to match the heel block. This is done by only adding a steel shank and thin leather filler over top of that.

    Hi, I just bought a pair of Hondo boots that have a high western heel, and when wearing them it puts the weight on the front of the Toes. What can I do to change that!?

    • @eradawnboots
      @eradawnboots  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Check the level of the boot by setting it on a table and looking at the profile of the boot. If the shaft leans forward, you can take a layer out of the heel block to level the boot. I would take it to a repair shop to have this done.

    How do you remove the last from the shoe after your done, does it not get nailed to the leather as part of the construction process?

      +Air Handler the last has a metal plate on the heel, sometimes full metal soled lasts.

    Would anyone be able to tell me where i could buy pieces of leather for making a heel stack?
    I have a pair of penny loafers with 2 stacks of 3mm leather for the heel. I've been wearing them for 8, 9 years and have reheeled with a rubber heel several times, and I've sanded down the top layer of leather almost to nothing and need to replace it. But I can't seem to find a source for this kind of leather.

    Been trying to find info somewhere but havent had any luck and the cobbler I have around here in my opinon as far as work on boots hes done for me, isnt that good so Id like to fix the problem myself. I have a collection of fryes, mostly harness and calvary black labels and a couple of them have loose heel blocks. the pad is good and firm but the block of the heel is actually loose where it meets the sole and is making an extra clack when I walk. How do I go about fixing that? Should I put the boot over somthing down inside and hammer them back on from the bottom? Do you think I should pull it completely appart, re glue and nail? That part might be tricky for me because I'm not sure what to boot the boot over that will work well enough for that. I really appriciate any advice you can give me!

      These heel blocks are compressed with 5000 lbs. per square inch, so all the fibers and pores are pressed out. This makes the heel blocks way more water and wear resistant.
