Ning Sheng thinks he's a fallen hero. He's nowhere near it. He should do a Xiang Yu and people might respect him more. For the history buffs, Crown Prince Zhanghuai was a real historical figure from the Tang Dynasty. He was forced by his own mother Wu Zetian to commit suicide. His poem "Picking Melon" cited here by Noble Consort Chang is totally inappropriate!

Who were/are the 10 sons? I counted 7 sons, 1 daughter.
The series is based in a fictional kingdom, and as far as I can tell only 7 princes are named in the narrative.
1st prince: Ning Chuan. Part of the Chang bloodline and used hidden soldiers/assassins to eliminate political opponents -controlling the court, Ultimately responsible 3rd prince Ning Qiao's death.
2nd prince: Ning Sheng. Also part of the Chang bloodline. Appears loyal to 1st prince, but also has his sights set on the throne.
3rd prince: Ning Qiao, Accused of high treason and executed. Righting this wrong is the ML's main focus for the first half of the drama.
5th prince: Ning Yan: Brainless and greedy, he is a lackey of the Crown Prince, until he is tricked by Headmaster Xin into thinking he is the rightful Crown Prince and he should bring down Ning Chuan.
6th prince: Ning Yi, Male Lead
7th prince: Ning Qi; He returns to the capital after ten years at the border. Ning Qi is a candid prince who loves his mother very dearly.
10th prince: Ning ji: The emperor's youngest son. A kind boy at heart, he trusts and respects Ning Yi. I don't think this character has appeared yet in the drama as of ep40, but I could be misremembering and they had a bit part somewhere.
We don't know anything about the missing princes of 4,8 and 9. They could be 'at the border' like 7th prince before he was recalled, or they could have died as children, or been eliminated as part of Ning Chuan's schemes.
I imagine that the emperor has way more than 1 daughter too. Just the one that appears as an actress is the only important one due to her relationship to the two leeds and a person of Chang blood.
