    I love this review, in my opinion the best on TH-cam about the X-Pro3. The camera is really appealing, but has some serious quirks, too. And it is double the price of what my full frame Nikon D750 nowadays cost. Cheers from Switzerland

    The film simulation settings are also applied to the raw files. Fuji's raw format, RAF, saves the same adjustments to the file. The thing is that programs like Lightroom are not designed to read that metadata. You have to use Fuji's own X Raw Studio or Capture One, for a professional solution (Raw Studio uses the camera for image processing, so Capture One is faster and has a free version, but doesn't have the same exact settings as the camera and the ability to save profiles to the camera).

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the note. The settings are not applied, rather they are (as you note) saved as metadata associated with the file, so that X Raw Studio can indicate what the original settings were. So the settings are only available to be applied, or alternates can be chosen.

    Thanks for the review of this cool camera, the fuji system is very appealing, I couldn’t resist to the temptation of getting a past generation model found on sale and so far I like it a lot. One thing I was disappointed is that it isn’t possible to apply the advanced filters when developing the raw in camera, nor is it possible to save the raw when an advanced filter is selected , glad to see that they have included this option now and maybe it will be brought to past models with future firmware updates......next step would be to make the advanced filters available also when recording movies and even better if the option of Olympus-style transition effects is added.....

I'm interested in this camera because I like shooting like film (OVF+manual lenses) but I'm not sure if there's any way to focus through the OVF or I have to either switch to EVF or use zone focusing. About the missing HDMI out, maybe there is a way to plug in a USB-C to HDMI converter, and get a video signal?

    Thanks for review. I had enjoyed with both part 👍
    I think Xpro 3 is a very capable camera iven for exigent photographers.
    I wondering if you had tested the autofocus in very dark conditions without contrast elements? I'm curious if the new autofocus is working in pitch black, and how accurate is.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, it was a pleasure to read your kind words.
      No, I did not test it under the extreme conditions you suggest - I demonstrated a low light example in the video, and took the very low light images of the performers and it worked surprisingly well for those.
      I'm not aware of any camera that can focus without contrast elements (regardless of brightness) or of any that can focus in pitch black.

  • @carlseibert9015
    @carlseibert9015 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent job! Question - I have an X100F. On that camera, with focus mode in "M" and the rear AF/AE lock button configured appropriately, one has rear-button focus. Place the focus box on the subject, press the rear button until the box turns green and release. (I always use the optical finder, but this function works in both.) You can shoot as many frames as you like. Focus stays put until you repeat the process. In this mode, shutter half-press locks focus, which is redundant as simply taking your finger off the button does the same thing. This provides functionality very similar to the Leica M's rangefinder with the advantage that you can "bail out" to continuous tracking autofocus if confronted with a subject that is approaching the camera. (Where the Leica is basically dead in the water unless you have superb muscle memory.) Does this function work the same way on the X-Pro3?
    By the way, it would be dandy if Fuji's firmware allowed rear-button focus in all modes, like every other profession level camera.
    I find it interesting that no reviewers - you and Hugh Brownstone included - have explained well the point of the optical "rangefinder" viewfinder from a shooting perspective. Am I the only person old enough to remember shooting every day with an M Leica and how seeing the subject in the viewfinder rather than an approximation of the photograph on a groundglass can lead to so much better performance from the photographer? Granted, the rangefinder camera isn't very versatile, but it sure is a powerful tool when one is dealing with humans up close and personal.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words, appreciated. Yes, the X-Pro3 works the same way, except the back focus button is available in all modes.

    What about one of the most important features the AF algorithm improvement for AF EV -6 using 1.4 lenses for extreme lowlight shooting? Did you test that out?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure how to test the claim of -6EV focus. However, as I demonstrated, focus works well under low light conditions - and some of the images I shot in very low light (the black and white images of the radio play actors and winemaker Katie Dickieson) were taken in very low light situations. The details for these images are available in the flickr album. www.flickr.com/photos/maartech/albums/72157711782476411
      I found that the speed of the autofocus - and the face detect - was equally fast and accurate under those conditions.

    Mr. Heilbron: I believe this camera has the same "guts" as the X-T3. I purchased an X-T3 2 months ago and I just can't seem to get the hang of it. Could you do a short video on setting up the X-T3 for everyday travel shooting with a 16 or 23 mm prime lens? I have tried having the camera set with everything on A, A, A; with ISO on A and picking the shutter speed and aperture; with shutter speed priority; and finally on aperture priority. My images are coming out under exposed. I have a Canon EOS R, 5D III, and a 7D II. I have much better results with these cameras.
    I am going on a trip soon and I would like to take this camera along instead of my EOS R. But if I don't improve soon, I'm leaving my Fuji at home....

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. The video features of the X-T3 are far ahead of this.
      It sounds as if either you've chosen an ineffective meter mode, your EV is mis-adjusted or you're not used to the response of the X-Trans sensor.
      If none of the above try using the chrome film simulation with highlight and shadow at -2 to tone down the contrast and increase the levels in the shadows.

      I am very fond of my X-H1, it's my go-to for video production. Unless you have a need for the optical viewfinder feature, I would not suggest you switch to the X-Pro3. The X-T3 might be worthwhile.

  • @Yalelax

    Nicely presented and conceived Maarten. Sometimes I admit to wishing there were just a few simple Leica like camera controls that would allow one to easily set up the camera and venture forth with one lens...I will likely never ever use most of the features on this interesting camera.
    With the price of the camera and a lens about the same as the Nikon Z6 camera and kit lens one must wonder which represents the "better choice". Obviously of course there is no "better", but only personal preference.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, it is personal preference. There is quite a style difference here, more than anything else. And the trouble with making a "simple" camera is that everyone would be up in arms about how it's missing essential features - just look how reviewers have attacked the Z50 for having fewer features than the Z6.

    Maarten, you have the best in-depth reviews on TH-cam. Really thorough!!! Question for you…I’m strongly considering adding the XPRO3 to my current kit of XT3 & X100V. I like my X100V so much that the XPRO3 is enticing me. I’m a full-time headshot & portrait shooter, sometimes in a small studio but often outside a natural light. I also shoot occasional family sessions. Do you think that the XPRO3 could handle all of that? I’ve also considered the XT4 but I don’t use my Fuji cameras for video and I prefer the compact size of the XPRO. I’m just curious if you think it’s “pro” enough. Pretty funny, considering the word is in the name. But still, I wonder if it can handle my needs as a full time portrait shooter. BTW, I cut my teeth on film so I’m especially in love with the analog feeling of Fuji. As a seasoned photographer yourself, do you recommend the XPRO3 ? Or do you prefer the XT4?

    Both of your videos are excellent, and to my opinion, the best reviews made about this camera to date. One issue which is still not clear, has to do with exporting TIFF rather than JPEG or RAW files. The question is: Does exporting TIFF enable files which contain all individual settings, for each one of the photos, just as in JPEG files? Including simulation, filters, bracketing results, etc.... If the answer is yes, this will solve major issues I had with the older Fuji models. I hate editing the limited (and inferior) JPEG files, and RAW files never did retain the information JPEGs did.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not understand what you mean by stacking.
      Are you talking about focus stacking? Are you talking about burst shooting?
      You can "stack" as many images as the SD card will hold before exporting to a computer.

    • @monsieurgolem3392
      @monsieurgolem3392 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MaartenHeilbron stacking as in being able to get an entire image in sharp focus. It's done mostly in macro photography but can also be done in landscape photography.

      Thanks for the clarification. The images that are saved when shooting a focus stack must be exported and assembled using computer software. Up to 999 images can be stored for a focus stack - as explained/demonstrated in the video, you can set this manually or use the auto feature.

    I fancy this one a lot but with some of the older x-series models available at great prices used I can not justify spending that much on the latest body. I would like to watch a comparison of the Pro2 and Pro3 as the 2 might rather be the upgrade to the Pro1 and E2 I already use. Unfortunately the Pro2 is not USB-chargable which would suit me a lot when traveling and/or camping. So I am also evaluating getting an E3.
