I've been reading your reviews for over 15 years (text only, obviously) and there are other viable resources out there on YT (Fro, Tony, Angry Photographer, etc.) but you're surprisingly adept in the YT area. Good for you. Look forward to your future reviews!

    Thanks for the transparent review - the camera is indeed a people camera, beautifully made and complete indulgence. No flash (in modern times), slightly ridiculous drop down screen, large, difficult to navigate options, this camera is aimed at 'Fujifilm' eccentrics who love kit for the sake of it as much as taking images. Your comment about Canon and Nikon for landscape and Fuji for people was spot on. Don't know about Sony for sport. Amazing this camera was built and I think it's great. Glad to see you online.

    ISO 160 is the lowest native ISO for the sensor; that's why you don't see 80 or 100 on the ISO dial. It's not recommended for best results. (Sorry if this has been pointed out already.)

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ISO 80 is cleaner and sharper with more highlight contrast, but amateurs might blow out the highlights and get more blur. Still, give me the option on the dial, Epic FAIL. Thanks!

    • @Bloggerky
      @Bloggerky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@KenRockwellTV I only have the X-T3, but I do not think the sensor range on the X-Pro 3 is different. According to the X-T3 specifications at p. 296 of the manual, the standard ISO for the sensor is 160-12,800; the lower "extended" range is down to 80 and up to 51,200. Of course you are free to shoot wherever you want but the dial (not the only way to change the ISO, of course) is limited to the normal range. If the X-Pro 3 has a different sensor range, then I stand corrected. Enjoy.

    • @lefthandright01
      @lefthandright01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      160 is the native base for fuji's minimum 100% dynamic range. From fuji's press material, when you expose an image at 100% dynamic range, the shadows will be captured at 160 ISO, however the brightest highlight will be processed at half that value. What the reviewer is saying is that at iso 80, the processor will now only apply -50% gain to the noise signal ratio, so therefore you will get better highlight contrast because the processor is not processing the brightest highlight at half the value of the images shadow detail. In real life use, I've used the X-t2 as my everyday camera. On bright, overcast days I typically shoot at iso 800 at 400% dynamic range. Even though the iso is relatively high for a bright day, upon importing my images, the softbox heavy overcast effect on the day still has more detail in highlights than when I shoot at base iso 200, and the greatest contrast edge to edge is when I set low iso of 100 where the camera will now apply a -50% gain . Which would explain why the reviewer is seeing a more contrast and slightly improved cleanliness, as the gain to signal noise ratio is at it absolute lowest, but also where one would need to exercise some savy to not blow out your highlights or overly crush your shadows. Fuji doesn't explain it very well,..but in fairness either does any other camera maker. Sony claims 15 stops of dynamic range, but in reality is more around 8, with 15 only being possible under very controlled studio environments. Hope this helps.

    I love that Fuji still makes cameras like they used to. I just picked up a x-t1 and I struggle to tell it apart from my film SLRs. I'm going to build my lens collection and then I think I will pick up a range finder styled x mount camera like this.

    Hi Ken, you're the reason I bought my first Nikon D40 and had a blast using it! I also happen to be a Fuji xpro3 user and agree with your analysis 100%. I think the one thing that needs to be spoken aloud is that this camera genuinely makes you re-adapt to shooting from the basics. I enjoy the moment with this camera as I'm more aware of everything that's happening around me. This is not the case when I use my Sony A7RIV for serious event. Love the Fujifilm xpro3 and your review of it.
    I can believe Fujifilm put a real cheap light weight plastic door on the USB. It's the worst on their most expensive camera, xpro3. Much cheaper fuji models have a much better implementation.

      I don't like the X-Pro3, too heavy. I really like the X-T20, X-T10, X-T30 and X-E3 overall. Digital cameras aren't like real cameras that last for decades, with digital we throw them away every few years so durability doesn't matter. It's not 1968 anymore and the less expensive FUJIs are also almost all metal. If they break, send them back under warranty or pay for a repair; I don't see the others being any less durable. Thanks!

    I’ve learnt more about cameras from listening to Ken Rockwell than I have from anyone else. I especially appreciate it when you tell us where the cameras are manufactured. That’s very important to me. I try to avoid cameras made in communist countries. I mean crikey, don’t they make enough products in China already without making our cameras too? Whilst I’m here, Ken, please, I have a quick question. The LCD screen on the back of the Fujifilm X100V - is it covered by glass or is it plastic? With it being a touchscreen I’d be surprised if it was plastic but I’m almost certain that it might be. I try to avoid touch controls anyway. Cool ting about the dials is they let you select the most used values. Then when you need the less used values just set it to “c” which is for command, then you have all the values not shown on the dial. For instance if the shutter dials lowest speed is 1 second but I want 4 seconds then the shutter dial should be set to “c” then use the thumb wheel ( just a like Nikon/Canon) to access the lower speed. This ISO dial should be used the same for the lower or higher iso values

    I've had quite a few Fuji cameras. Love them. Had a couple X100's and a Pro2. I'm one of the few that use the OVF. I'm a little disappointed they didn't include the two magnification on the OVF in the Pro3.. My 50mm f2 gets a pretty small virtually unusable box.
    Another issue I hope will be corrected in a firmware update is that the framing lines do NOT go back to a neutral infinity position when the shutter button is released. ALL other hybrid cameras Fuji has made snap back to neutral. On the Pro3 if you close focus the parallax just sits there even when you turn the camera off and back on. In order to get the frame line and focus box back you have to hit the shutter button first. THAT'S NUTS. I hope it was an oversight and they plan to fix this so if you have any pull, please write them. I've already done my part. Anyone else out there that uses the OVF contact Fuji. They only way they will fix it is if they get complaints.

    It's not included but if you need a flash Fuji made a really nice little flash specifically for the X-Pro line. The EF-X20 is very well made, metal, fits, looks and works great on either and X100 or X-Pro. For around $150+ if you like to use flash I highly recommend it. I've been doing so for nearly a decade now with pretty good success. (I've been professional photographer since 1985, but Real Estate/Architecture only since 2010...more grizzled than seasoned probably! LOL)
      The 10-24 (or 8-16) is wonderfully rectilinear and if you manage your levels and juxtaposition to close up objects, Lightroom's Upright module offers results that were previously only a workable option with tilt and shift of good view camera or the really high end PC lenses.

    Very nice but the sensor is vulnerable when the lens is off. These cameras need a protective shutter or cap which has to be closed before the lens can be removed. Otherwise it would be nearly perfect. I have an X100 but the lens is fixed and the buttons are fiddly and easily pressed by accident.

      Colors too dull. Just try it and see. Also optical finder a bad idea as you never really know what's in the picture, optical finder is for action. Since you really only want/need the EVF for landscapes, a much less expensive camera will do the same or better job, especially if you want built in flash to add shadow detail. Thanks again!

    160 is the base iso, going lower than that is basically pointless, which is why it's not on the iso dial. Same with going above 12800, there's essentially no reason you'd want to do that because it's just adding digital gain that you could add in Lightroom in post.

    Hahaha! Ken Rockwell, I love the irony.
    I personally almost never use the LCD of any camera, so I really don’t care which way it’s facing. On the other hand the finder downgrade from the XP2 bothers me a lot. I‘d really like to have some of the improvements they made, but the finder seems to be a steep price to pay. I briefly looked at the M10 as an alternative for its finder and better colour, but the camera is so much less capable overall that it makes even less sense. I‘ll stick to my film Leica for personal use, but my workhorse XP2‘s both quickly approach the quarter million mark and start to feel worn. I‘m now torn between getting two new XP2’s, two XP3‘s or one of each... aye, I’m exactly your nightmare nutter who shoots these weird cameras!

    This is a street camera. Go to a bar or to a busy city and shoot people at close range with a wider lens. It’s not a nature camera, just like a Leica m6 wasn’t intended as a landscape camera.
    If you want to get pictures like Eliot Porter, use sheet film, or a Nikon d850.
    This is meant to be a David Alan Harvey camera, or a William Albert Allard camera.

    personally, I'm an LCD screen guy. I could see this camera paired with some great vintage glass giving you the ultimate manual experience, minus the film. I've never experienced muted colours shooting Fuji cameras using RAW. I agree that Fuji cameras are great portrait shooters for shooting humans and domesticated animals. Most professional sports shooters/filmers use manual focus, my hats off to those guys/gals. I'm not a fan boy of any pacific brand but at the moment, Fuji does what I want it to do and makes it fun. I'm an amateur photographer. I often fly 11,000 miles and then take some photos which are important to me. Then I fly 11,000 miles back again. Sometimes I make mistakes; I find it's much cheaper to look at the screen after taking a shot than to get home and realise I cannot correct a mistake. It only takes a second or so to do the check and if others find that idiotic tell someone who cares.

    • @adrianguggisberg3656
      @adrianguggisberg3656 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexander Menzies You can review the photo you’ve just taken (in fact, any photo) through the EVF. This lets you see far more precisely what is going on than the LCD. You can even set the camera to automatically display the photo you just took for the amount of time you feel is suitable. However, if you screwed up, reviewing the photo isn’t going to change that fact, you just know it a little earlier. That still won’t bring the moment back you meant to take a picture of. Sure, you loose maybe one out of ten photos to camera or user error, but since one would usually work ones way towards a shot, taking two to three dozen shots in the process, you should usually be able to afford loosing one or to frames out of the bunch.

    • @obscur_yoann

      No, the EVF isn’t smaller... And it is vastly improved. The OVF has only one magnification instead of 2 before. So bigger with 28-35 and little smaller for 50+ because no magnification change.

      Mike H. The eye relief is better (slightly), the magnification is bigger (0.66x instead of 0.59x), resolution is better, larger OLED panel vs LCD, way better contrast and colors, fast refresh rate... nothing is smaller here. It is the Optical viewfinder’s magnification who changes from 2 different ones at 0.36x and 0.60x to 0.52x now. 😉
