    Process Blue and Rhodamine Red are names of solid color inks used for printing. They are part of the base set of 12 or 14 colors used to mix other colors in the Pantone solid color library.

    I don't know how many folks remember this, but in the early 2000s the Letraset Pantone Tria markers were as popular as Copics.
    Over the years they changed names to just "Tria", and had other lines like ProMarker, and apparently Letraset was acquired by Winsor & Newton.
    I suppose their license to use the Pantone® name lapsed, and now Talens picked it up.

    • @meghan9436
      @meghan9436 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This was the comment that I was looking for! I used the Letraset markers during my first years of college, and then they disappeared. I think that this Talens 3 set is a test market release to see how they do before releasing a full set. These markers are designed with designers in mind so that they can get precise colours.

    • @NelaDunato
      @NelaDunato ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@meghan9436 Oh, I wasn't aware Talens only made the CMY primary set so far. Yeah you may be right that it's a test.
      I'm a graphic designer, but frankly I don't see a point in using these in my work. There are thousands of individual Pantone formulas, and it would be impossible to mix them precisely from a marker set based on Pantone inks.
      I refer to the official swatch books to pick Pantone colors and just send those to print... But I'd be curious to learn how another designer might actually find a benefit in these.

    • @meghan9436

      @@NelaDunato Fellow artist and graphic designer here! During those early years when I was in school, they really had us focused on the fundamentals. I remember we had to render things on graph paper before we were given the go ahead to draw up the finished product in Illustrator. Those Letraset Pantone markers were helpful, particularly for precise matching from the hand drawings.
      This was primarily done when drawing up signs for storefronts. I agree with you that this is an outdated way to go about it. When I worked in the industry, we never did any hand drawn art and we went straight to digital. We also made use of the Pantone books you mentioned.

    • @meghan9436
      @meghan9436 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NelaDunato I was under the impression from the video that Talens only had the CMY set so far. I checked the website, and it turns out that they do have other sets available. It still seems pretty limited compared to other options out there though. Just wanted to post this correction.

    • @NelaDunato
      @NelaDunato ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meghan9436 Yeah, I get that. I studied engineering around 2004-2008 and they too made us draft on graph and tracing paper for class projects, despite it already being an outdated practice, and completely useless in the industry.
      I personally *love* sketching concepts on paper, I just don't see the point of precise color matching - it's impossible anyway. My clients never see my sketches. I think it would be more of a "designery" thing to have in your studio, like my official Pantone mug lol.

    Pantone had an alcohol marker line made with a brand called Letraset. They were very expensive and had 3 (YES THREE) nibs. A broad kinda chisel on one side and then a medium nib on the other .... and then a very very fine line nib that was part of the cap that fit over the medium nib. it was kinda crazy but so so useful. I loved them. the cost was insane. I still have some and they still work.

      That blue is not cyan tho

    • @5ofsix747
      @5ofsix747 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Because its not cyan. and not magenta. if the colours do not match the swatch Pantone will not put that colour name on it. Defeats the whole purpose and concept.
      Process Cyan is much lighter and Magenta is much darker. I think the colour was a hard match for these markers (especially as water based/soluble) so they went with the more vibrant colours. Also, Process Magenta and Cyan are not transparent in the sense of wa water based transparent ink. Colour production is really produced with overlaying of colours, screening of colour as well as the halftone / moire patterns.
      I am trying to think back to my old press days... and I dont think they used the true Cyan on the press, I am sure they used something closer to the Process Blue.

      @Miarahdd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaephillips6512 Pantone has quite a few issues regarding the way they handle colors (quite literally holding them hostage and they have a history of charging insane amounts for usage). Pantone tried to say Adobe is not pulling their weight by keeping the color library up to date with new pantone colors.
      Pantone is now charging people 15$ per month to use their color library. Even with Adobe and their flaws and other issues I have with them, this problem seems to lie with Pantone honestly, because it fits their track record.

    Interesting they called these primary. The reason you don't see cyan, magenta, and yellow in traditional medium is because cmyk is used to translate digital colors during the printing process. But, it doesn't work well traditionally, which is why some of the colors were more "overpowering" when Kasey layered them.

    P.S. I had checked before watching this video, this set of markers is: $50.00 on Amazon.
    Not such an insane amount of money if they could vacuum, dust & be so extra phenomenal from outer space.
    Ya know?
    As far as I can tell, there is not much difference in the quality between this brand & the Crayola brand.
    So on a scale of 1-10:
    Pantone: Minus 3
    Crayola: 9
    Suggestion:
    Perhaps offer a series on decoing a full set of Pantone Postcards.
    This is an on-going challenge here on the Ute.
    Just suggesting.
    Best day now.

    I think when you layer your colors you are doing it in the wrong order. Using inks I always want to layer my darkest color first, then move up to lightest. So in this case you should put down blue, then red, then yellow. That will make the mixed colors pop correctly.
