I think part of the "literally me" concept also stems from projection, wish fulfillment, and power fantasy.
I think people latch onto Bateman, Durden, and Tate, because they like the idea of having all that power and/or charisma, and none of the responsibility. When others are pushed away, they construe it as 'I'm too cool for them' or 'they can't keep up' or 'they don't know what it's like' or 'they're just sheeple'. It's seldom ever looking at the flaws of a character as actual flaws that cause problems, but rather token bells & whistles that serve to make them more interesting.
They don't want to come to terms with the fact that Bateman is an empty shell of a person; that Durden is a hypocritical overcorrection; or that Tate's self-absorbed childish antics are catching up to him. They want to latch onto the character's flaws & power, but don't want to actually take a critical look at them.

Goku is a power fantasy, Spider man is a power fantasy, honestly 95% of superhero stories are power fantasies, Naruto is a power fantasy, most shonens are power fantasies. Pretty much most of mainstream media depicts power fantasies and this comment really explains why people gravitate towards these stories of unrealistic people with a unrealistic moral compass who live in near utopias with only a few clear villains. Characters who have always been destined to win and only ever do good things. Who never have a moment of weakness expect maybe a little self doubt. The reason people like characters like Guts, Spike, and any other “literally me” characters it’s because their real people with real flaws doing humans things. They don’t feel a higher sense of commitment to everyone around them/they owe the world anything. They’re not some perfect picture of this perfect person who lives in a perfect world. The world around them treats them like it treats everyone. They’re truly balanced characters. This comment and video disgusts me. The lack of empathy and understanding is overwhelming

@@kadsamuraishotgun1114 I am not criticizing the characters. I'm well aware of Goku, Spiderman, & Superman as power fantasies--and as aspirational figures. I also adore relatable anti-heroes like Spike & Guts, for their drive & humanity. I'm criticizing the "literally me" approach to them, which flattens them into morally unrestrained power fantasies. That the LM crowd latches onto them, simply because they're powerful, resourceful, and have sympathetic qualities despite having a less idealized moral compass (though they are still very present),. Not really going into nuances of their philosophy, nor how their flaws actually hurt them.
Sometimes, LM fans twist characters they like into gross parodies of themselves. Such as turning Goku/Gohan into a roided-out egomaniac, with a harem of every female character on the show, and mocking the protagonists of other stories before one-shotting them.
Bebop handled this phenomenally, with the character of Andy--a goofy, self-absorbed, oblivious, rich dork who took up bounty hunting because it seemed fun & cool. He embodies everything shallow about Spike, and yet is equally skilled/qualified. He is framed as uncool, yet has the same qualities LM folk cling to Spike for. People say Spike is "Literally Me," and the show says "No, you're more like Andy."

The "literally me" characters reflects on the state of society, what does it says one may wonder? it says that a lot of people are lonely and depressed.
Thats why these characters are popular, they have those exact traits that you wont find otherwise in a "normal" protagonist, the most important one is that
    they are irrelevant.
They are not messiah/chosen one/neo they are literal nobodies who happend to be under cirumstances that forces them to go through difficult times, their goal is not global or they dont have one at all, they are not even underdog because they cant or dont want to get on top of it all, yet they are still heroes of their own stories.
They are basically the most relatable characters one can think of in these troubled times, because never before we had so many broken, downright suicidal people as today.

The only part that makes me think “literally me” in Guts, is during the golden age when we talks about dreams, saying that slaying 100 men meant nothing because he lives without purpose, and ever since hearing Griffith talk about what he considers an equal he make the choice to leave and find his own dream
Guts says it best during the campfire of dreams
“My flame ain’t here. Maybe I’m just warming myself by that campfire for a bit. Maybe I just stopped in by chance”
Struggling to find purpose in life is something we all struggle with. Some more than others, me especially since I have no idea where to start so does Guts who for the past year just wonders Midland fighting and honing his swordsmanship hoping to find something to hold on to, and even after he came back to The Band of The Hawk he still doesn’t know for sure if he’s found his dream
And there’s something about that makes me think “Wow he literally me”

people see these characters for their monstrousness, violence, tragedy, often sexism, and lack of self control. any real human who acts superficially like these characters is then seen as some sort of repugnant, which I believe leads directly to identifying with the monstrousness thereby ascribed.
it doesn't matter if you aren't a creep, if you creep everybody out they will shun you, and what can anybody really do about that?

If you haven't already, read goodnight punpun, it's somewhat long but nowhere near something like berserk or something similar, it's incredibly unique, and it has such a personalized forced perspective of someone mentally ill and traumatized in a nihilistic world, it's horrible yet beautiful

    For a recommendation my man
Inyuyashiki, it’s about how a old dying man with a family who hates him and a teen who was raised on such pure unconditional love to the point of sociopathy both end up getting stolen and tested on by aliens and given extreme superpower, only to then return as their Guinea pig experiment on what people do with immense power
It winds up as this race between the two to find and kill the other as the rest of humanity tries to decide what to do about them

oh hey I got to the end. Sorry for being overly rude, I legit do like Beach House but I'm a bit irony poisoned. and fwiw I did mean that I can appreciate your point of view.
Unfortunately I'm not a big manga guy. But I would recommend trying Oyasumi Punpun, if you're an Evangelion sort of guy (and I'm sure that a Berzerk fascination would be good for getting into some of the more taboo topics). Inuyasha is also an interesting case because while it is an immensely popular series that became a massive filler-reliant cash cow, it's also an unapologetically violent and grim story - at least to begin with - with content that's both a fair bit more sexual and violent in nature in the manga than the anime. Even if the anime already skirts fairly violent.
I can't speak personally for the next one, but there's a manga called like Barefoot Gen that's based on the mangaka's experience as a kid who survived the Hiroshima bombing of 1945.
There's also a trans manga I've heard of called Wandering Son which I hear covers themes of societal ostracization and divergence between expectation/outside pressure and the true inner self that can't be expressed. That might be worth a go if you're willing to dive into not only deep subject matter, but queer themes and complex queer portrayals.
I'll be frank, I'm stressed and angry and rude, but this video was good and I hope these manga recs can help.
